Nothing Exists But You | The Philosophy of Solipsism

Solipsism denies that the human mind has any valid reason for believing that anything outside itself exists, which is a pretty radical standpoint to take. But who knows: could it be that despite the vastness of the universe (or so it seems), only you exist? This video explores the philosophy of solipsism, using ideas from George Berkeley, Descartes, Zhuangzi, Kant, and The Matrix.

Alan watts was wrong. The only true meaning there is in life is create more life. That's all there is, the drive to stay alive is the only thing that every single plant and animal have in common. That's why women are so ambitious and so ready to drop a man as soon as it is beneficial to them. This world is a hell that is controlled by the ever present desire to live. Watts a genius but he's a dreamer who liked sex as much as anyone.

I felt the same way. Ultimately, however, the deepest nature of the universe doesn't matter. Whether a personal dream or an independently-extant reality, our decision-making criteria is not altered, and that's really the prime function of knowledge. There are cause-and-effect processes at play in this experience, and we need to understand them and align our thinking and behaviors to them in order to prosper. Through consistency and consensus of experience, we can attain knowledge that is more useful than mere opinion. This is science, and it is the height of "objectivity" available to man. There are such objective answers to questions of physics, morality, human nature, etc., and we'll miss them if we buy into a self-defeating epistemological position that asserts futility.

As someone who follows Zhuangzi's teachings, it was the Butterfly Dream that saved me from depression, from this day forth, I became a taoist. I don't actually knows if what I am seeing is real, but I know that my mind is real, and even though some of the memories that I had might be fake. I still enjoyed every second of my life, because in the end, does not matter. Thank you for the video, Einzelgänger, you and your channel have a place in my heart. ★ 〜

@@iluvbobba5287 Hello! Thank you for the compliment! I love tea, for real, haha! About the other questions, that's an interesting story, I was playing a game, right in the beginning one butterfly appeared with a quote mentioning how important our memories actually are, I loved it right away. After some time playing, one of the characters had a option: "What do you want know?" I clicked: "What the 'Hudie' does mean?" And she answered: "It is based on the concept of Zhuangzi' story. He didn't know if he was a butterfly or a man in one dream he had. Someone who does not know where reality is, like us, we travel dimensions, we don't know what is actually real and what is not. That's it, we are not sure about anything. That's also why our symbol is a butterfly." After this, I had a complete shock, I was amazed by this story and concept, I researched more and more, became more interested in Daoism. I ended up becoming a daoist in the end, feeling better about the world. I would say that a Daoist is someone who believes in the universe greatness, contemplating all nature and accepting our ignorance towards it. Different from other religions, Daoism (at least this branch) is pretty "logical".

It’s a school, you are asking the right questions. Keep listening to your inner voice, keep questioning your existence while enjoying it. Like a dry sponge suck so much knowledge you can! Your soul is here to learn about dualism, like love/pain/hate/anger/happiness/sadness, while enjoying Gods (Universe) creation, what we call our reality. In the afterlife there is no such as pain, anger or hell, only pure love and comfort. The universe wouldn’t punish you, you’ll just return or maybe even be demoted into an animal soul (just a theory). To learn your lessons that you never learned. This will happen over and over again, til you got it and then finally your soul can ascend to the higher dimensions. My advice is to spread love and be positive, appreciate the darkness in your life, see them as learning rather than failure, cause after all its a school of life. You need to fall to get up and there is nothing you can do about it, except holding onto your emotions when you’re rolling down the roller coaster. Mastering your emotions is key in life, cause in anger/jealousy/hate and other low vibrational state, will make you choose poor decisions. In return it will create more suffering for you and people around you. Peace bro

I cannot tell whether you’re all real or not, but after so many tests and evidence, I’m sure reality and people respond to my conscious or subconscious intentions. Sometimes I may get from a person the exact sentence that I imagined her or him saying. I’m not sure whether I’m alone or not. But I’m sure duality is the actual trip. We’re “allone”.

Honestly, I have often wondered and thought along these lines. The ONLY "reality" we can be sure of existing is our own. But when I experience pain, this totally shifts my perspective. Pain is very real and I will go to anyone who has the remedy to help or remove the pain. I mean it still could all be just a part of my experience. I suffered and still do at times from "Existential angst." In that sense, I understand that particular pain and the school of thought behind it. I have always been a very deep thinker. Im not sure if one thing has anything to do with the other (they probably do), but I have at times suffered from severe depression, despair and other related issues. Spending too much time in your own head is not good. Moments are fleeting at best and we can never get them back. Living in the present moment is a challenge for people like me. Like the saying goes and is still VERY TRUE today "ignorance is bliss."

This is really weird. When I was around 10, I sort of developed this perceived fantasy that somehow, everything around me was here to serve me, serve my existence. Not in the sense of doing my bidding, but for me to exist. I eventually lost this feeling around going to high school. Maybe 10 might be way to young, but I remember having this fantasized perception, very young and lasting for many years. Usually I only thought about this when I was in bed, at night. What makes this even more weird, is that I talked about this in therapy many years ago, I love the The Matrix, I’m one of those people who has high suspicion that we live in a simulated world and now I’m connecting the dots, from a lot of years in past, to a more recent past and having this strong uneasy feeling, right now in the present, because I watched this video. It’s like, from time to time, I have the perception that I’m dreaming for a couple of seconds, which everything seems odd and strange, confusing me. This video, while not not causing sensorial weirdness, gives a sense of dreadfulness. So strange!

As I engage in ruminations upon the cogitations of the solipsistic school of thought, I am transfixed by their premise which posits that the entirety of what one may consider as real, along with the abstract ideas that transmute the real, all dwell within an internal domain, such that everything which exists within the purview of one's perception is but a reflective, and hence inferential manifestation of that which resides within. According to this ontology, it can be inferred that the external or objective world, which is commonly regarded as separate from the internal or subjective world, is nothing more than a mirroring of the selfsame internal reality, and every aspect of the reality that is perceived is but an extension of the selfsame internal consciousness

true understanding is possible. when a human being awakens to their true nature they gain the ability to directly sense resonance within another. things like literal telepathy between two people become possible. this kind of communication is not possible on the level of conceptual thought, which is where most people's minds reside.

Whether everything outside our mind really does exist or are merely just illusions, distortions, dreams, fantasies, simulations, etc. it's still wise to remember that those things are not within our control. So therefore our feelings, behaviors & actions still matter, regardless of what the so-called reality might be. “You have power over your mind - not outside events. In my 20's, there was a massive coping mechanism failure that manifested as Solipsism within me. This adaptation nearly drove me insane, along with the fact that, that was a way the environment and people were treated. It is absolutely true that an entity with conciousness is the only thing one can be sure of in this plane of existence. It really is interesting how such ideas are formulated in ones mind.

The things they say, career choices, love interests, hobbies, appearances, etc. may all be comforming to social pressures or other expectations, so it's impossible to ever fully know if they're being genuine or telling the truth since you can't enter their consciousnesses to confirm.

More than a slight deviation, I have an idea about reincarnation that lays along these lines. What if there is only ONE of us? There is one being that is living out every single life that has ever walked on this plane of existence. It's a very long game of course. It would explain what Buddha and Jesus said to treat others the way we want to be treated. Because what you do to others you ARE doing to yourself. That would mean that I am the doctor and the patient. I am the mother and the child. I am the murderer and the victim. I am the prisoner and the warden. I am the abandoned child and the parent who couldn't stay. None of this can be confirmed and I don't really care because the idea of it let's me contemplate that while I may have been a victim of something, I have also victimized another. Or was it myself? It helps me suspend judgment for trivial matters and fosters compassion in my heart. It feeds the wolf I want to be.

I had the same thought before but if we are 1 being and the same person but we are different cause we are living with different experiences, beliefs and ideas. Then I thought are animals are self? And I was thinking that while eating. Then I thought am I eating myself urself ourself? Then I felt like throwing up cause I was thinking about us all being a 1 being while eating. 🤮🤢 Then I thought no no no this is a really bad philosophy I just kinda came up with or thought up. I think if this can become a philosophy these are some ideas I came up with or u or us or I’s. Could be called Collective-selfism, Oneism, Selfism, Unified-consciousism, Boundless-Selfism, One-Selfism. A new word needs to be created if we are one self. Maybe Sllef from all and self. Sllefism - Sllefist Sllef just not happy with the names though it needs to sound big and coherent and immersion to what we or I all are.

It wasn't a negative experience, it was as if there was a higher power putting me through a learning experience almost like my entire life was a simulation and because the mushrooms brought a lot of love and kindness out of me I thought the higher power was suggesting I was reaching another level of consciousness and getting prepared to move to a more enlightened dimension or parallel universe.

Something that I can't explain

I think the answer to trying to prove there is outside the mind, opposed to just oneself, is to believe all possibilities simultaneously. By which I mean that the mind may not be able to prove anything exterior to that, but if we understand, and can successfully contemplate, enough about everything possible, we can consider ourselves actually participants in all these universes simultaneously. This is really only an extension of understanding everyday imperceptions of the senses.

This philosophy sounds so much like Advaita Vedanta..in fact I could say the roots of Solipsism lay there itself. Advaita Vedanta doctrine is based on this very fact that God(Supreme Consciousness/Awareness) alone exists and everything else doesn't. And this consciousness is what alone witnesses all these name and forms. There is no absolute existence of these objects living and non-living outside that awareness. When we transcend this transactional reality of name and forms, we begin to see what we truly are!

I was about maybe 8, and at school we would line up infront of the teacher waiting to go back to class. I remember this very very vividly. I looked around me, looked at the other kids and thought something along the lines of: ''I am the only one here who sees everything through my own eyes''. That feeling never left me. It pops up every now and then. But that feeling was most significant as a kid.

I think one interesting factor that contributes to the appearance of such skeptical doubt of the external world, is how the world treats people unequally. I am here, conscious of my own conscious laying in my bed thinking about thought, while the world also tells me that there are children starving to death and people dying every millisecond. The drastic difference in these two realities just makes it easy for us to believe that either one of them can’t be real, which in this case since it would be subjectively ridiculous to deny our own reality, come to conclude that the cruel lives of others are the ones capable of being unreal. Which then causes a chain of doubt that leads to the uncertainty of the mind of others as a whole.

No real rules, find a nitch and maybe your species will survive, but that survival will be full of bullshit and suffering.

Interesting question: When you are in a dream, you can talk to other people in the dream. So are the people in your dream self-aware and sentient and conscious? If not and they are merely creations of your own mind, then how do you know if people in the waking real world are real and self-aware or not? It's impossible to know. Any of you think about this too?

  • @sid9137

    @sid9137

I absolutely agree with you, in my dreams I can talk to people as if they are literally there and the interactions we have in there have always felt like that the other people are self aware and sentient and conscious and whatever they speak or do, do as per their consciousness and understanding but the thing here is that I am in my dream and only my consciousness is what is creating them and the conversations. If being in a dream as humans defines it, such experiences could feel so surreal, then maybe, who knows, if everything else we experience in this reality as we term it while we are woke has been made up by our own mind. I think we would never know what real is, i mean, how can one absolutely conclude that the dream is just a dream and once we wake up, then everything is real?

This is a very nice video, there is just one problem: "You can be certain of only your own existence." and other such equivalent statements implies doubt about the statement itself: If I can be sure of only my own existence then since I learned of this concept from "someone else" then the statement itself is questionable given its source.

4:42 this is what scares me. We will never know whether what we're looking at is real or everything that exists is real, for all we know we could be in a simulation right now, or atleast stuck in our minds, everything that happens in our life could just be made up in our minds. Thats what I find depressing. But we shouldn't dwell on this concept because after all it's just a concept and it may not even be true, however scary and sad it may be.

I had multiple of those dream where i had fully different lifes with different memories, which faded slowly as i woke up. Also dreamed of death and the paradise after, waking up after deciding to live again. It really doesn't matter whats real or not, just try to make the best out of it, if you don't know if you wake up once again.

@@Mel-pi2ns Death was pretty painful. I got burned alive in an expanding fireball. First i felt everything getting hot, then pain, then nothing as the skin burned off, then cold. Same with sight, first saw yellow, then white, then black, until i saw a white light and moved towards it. I found myself in a forest clearing. Everything felt like a constant dejavu like everywhere i go i was before. I had no pain or any negative feelings or emotions. I was completely alone, but it didn't bother me. My memory capacity was very low, like i could feel myself forgetting everything i wasn't paying attention to consantly. Concept of time was weird, it felt like i've been there for a span of multiple lifetimes. One day i looked through a mountain formation into the sun and rememberered my death. I thought i spend enough time whereever i was and decided that i want to go back to maybe help with the situation, whatever killed me left behind. I knew where a portal was to go back, so i went there and woke up.

If you believe our reality is full of conscious beings like yourself, you're likely to be compassionate and live a good virtuous life. You help others, in turn, they help you. If this belief turns out to be wrong, no one is hurt. And nothing mattered anyway. If you believe we are the only real sentient existence, you're likely to be reckless, apathetic, lonely and more. Your actions are only to appease yourself with no consideration for the other. If this belief turns out to be wrong, then it is a life wasted, and you're a force of unnecessary suffering to the conscious ones around you.

Well, the problem is we don't know the consequences of our actions. Anything good you do might lead to horrible things. Similarly, even the darkest deeds can bring something good. If you realize this, maybe because you've seen it happen in your life, you might wish you had never existed. A clean conscience can only result from a life that left no trace. Too bad it's impossible.

All I can assume based on my life's experiences is that I feel I am a bystander, and not in control of anything in life at all. Also It feels as though there is some greater force at work making things happen and laughing at my feable attempts to be in control of my life. It also feels like my mom is an NPC. She never changes. At all. She acts tge way she has always acted regardless of the presence if new information. It's as if she doesn't have the ability to take in new information and adapt or adjust to it in any way. She seems like a program with predetermined attributes, personality traits, responses, and temperament. It actually seems that way for everyone I've ever met which leads me to feel as though I could be in a simulation of some sort. Idk like i said idk shit I'm just here for the memes

I’ve been studying these types of philosophies for years and I don’t think they’re binary. The human mind wants to say it’s “this” or “that” but te infinite divine force is beyond that. It’s bigger than mind. The closest conclusion I’ve gotten is yes, this experience is completely inside of your consciousness. But you are God’s dream and he’s having multiple dreams at once - across millions of times, Spaces, people, etc. the multiverse is like a holograph. And it is intertwined through the energies accessed and expressed via feelings. These feelings cast potentials that all work together to co create the multiverse. But it’s all ultimately god and you are god (not the religious definition - just the word I’m using for “all that is”)

  • @Serai3

I don't believe that binary thinking is engrained in human beings. There have been cultures that did not perceive the world in binary ways. Western thought has swamped most other ways of thinking, but it is not written in our DNA that we must see the world as either/or.

@@TheHogart Pretty much! But I do believe in separation - like you can have your experience and I can have mine and somehow they are holographically connecting into this fabric that I choose to call God. But yes, it is like a nuanced advaita/non-duality. I actually don't think the human mind is supposed to fully comprehend it, because the mind is ultimately limited. But whatever your intuition says is correct - this is just my intuition. And I think multiple intuitions can and do exist.
