When he says “ they are the teachers who taught me to fight me” he was referencing a field trip he took when he was in elementary school. The school bus was going by a housing project and the teacher said, “ ohh stay out of there kids, bad people live there.” Well Zack had many friends and family who lived in those projects. Zack is white and Mexican. He noticed from an early age the discrepancies between how the two sides of his family were treated in society. I love the end when he repeats “ All of Which are American Dreams” it’s so powerful. Zack does this in many songs, it’s a powerful tool to get people to REALLY listen to the message. Rage and NWA had a lot of the same topics but were treated very differently. The main reason IMHO, was their fan base. NWA had a mainly black fan base while Rage was mainly a white fan base. NWA got hassled by the police at their concerts. They just waited for a reason to bust up the show and arrest them, while Rage pretty much flew under the radar. Ohh they had a few run-ins with the authorities but nothing compared to NWA. In fact recently some republican politician that listened to them back in the day, called out Tom Morello for “becoming” too political!!!??? Tom was like “ bro, our message hasn’t changed in over 30 years, you just weren’t paying attention!”

That is indeed Maynard. Tool and RatM are very close socially, if not musically. Tom Morello and Adam Jones (tool’s guitarist) were friends in high school back in Chicago, and before Tool and RatM as we know them formed in the underground LA rock scene, Maynard was going to sing in a very early version of Rage. I may be incorrect, but I think I’ve read how it was Tom that introduced Maynard to Adam Jones, and that was part of the start of Tool (Maynard and drummer Danny Carey had already played together in the very indie and underground band Green Jellÿ). So yeah, the connection between the two bands runs deep

You nailed it that Maynard was the singer that came in. Rage and Tool have a lot in common, in that they’re both trying to shake people up out of their complacency and get us looking at the world and ourselves in a new way. Having Maynard on the track was not only super cool but just total synchronicity of two awesome talents.

Everyone always hypes up Zach and Tom morello (as they should), but I don’t think enough appreciation is given to the bass. It sets the mood of their songs. It’s like the under appreciated driving force of the songs. I’m not a music nerd so idk the terminology but it’s the bass line that lets me know a lot about the songs sound. But srsly rage is one of the most perfect bands for me. First they sound good, 2 they get you hype, and 3 they have strong socio political messaging. It’s like they were created in a lab to appeal to someone like me.

@@kikivon3501 yep. I’m super picky about what songs I really love so I started really paying attn to the different instruments while trying to figure out what it was about a song that made me love it. I found one of my fav elements is the rhythm of a song. So now I tend to notice the different instruments more when I listen. Im not an expert or anything, I just have a better idea of what I like. It also got me thinking how the singer and lead guitarist always get the most attn but the backbone of a lot of songs is the bass and drum. I’m a big fan of the bass guitar in rage songs. It really sets the whole vibe of the song.

"vengeance, a badge, and a gun" - that is the line that put this on radar in 92 by tying it to widespread Los Angeles police violence against the poor and minorities. That said, this song is an exhortation to rise up in the wake of the Rodney King beatings and resulting LA Riots. The Maynard part you mentioned in the middle is very much an admonition of all of us who have not taken action to create the change we want to see. This song is really asking us how long we are going stand by, do nothing, and accept the nightmare.

There really isn't a "bad" rage song, I feel. Those guys are the ones that are most socially relevant. Other bands are great, but in a different way. Led Zeppelin? One of the best of all time. But they speak to the soul and the ephemeral, not the real, like rage does. So in the end they are both amazing, but in different ways.
