This is one of my favorite Sondheim songs and I have heard it sung in context by some truly great performers. I had the privilege of performing in the chorus of SWEENEY TODD at the New York City Opera which we introduced in 1984 and continued to perform for the next three decades. During that time stars came and went. Our first Sweeney was Tim Nolen and he could have given Jack Nicholson "scary lessons." He came back years later to do Judge Turpin but reverted again to the barber. Rosalind Elias was our first Mrs. Lovett, followed by Joyce Castle, Elaine Bonazzi, Myrna Paris and Marcia Mitzman. Elaine Paige came in one season, having never done Mrs. Lovett, and got it down in two weeks of rehearsal. She was amazing! I saw the original production with Angela Lansbury at the Uris in 1979 and never dreamed I would be performing in it with the City Opera five years later and for 30 years after that. This production was directed by Hal Prince and kept in perfect running condition season after season by Artie Masella and Albert Sherman. Sondheim often came to our final rehearsals and would sometime come down to the stage or even come on to the stage and give us a bit of a pep-talk. He was shy, but very approachable. This particular song sticks with me more than any other.
I was at the concert that night, and I know the whole thing was filmed so , please, to quote Sondheim, give us more to see!
May his memory be a blessing
Katrina Lenk is the best ever. I'm dizzyingly enamored by her.
Absolutely sublime. Katrina is transcendent. She can act the hell out of anything and her unique voice is perfect for Sondheim.
The most memorable night I ever spent in the theater! Please give us more to see! Especially, the surprise appearance of Lin Manuel Marinda' doing Franklin Shepard Inc from Merrily We Roll Along! I know the whole show was recorded because I saw the cameras on tripods taping from beginning to end! What a thrill to be in the same room with Stephen Sondheim ( GOD ) BRAVA !
If a video of her singing Last Midnight exists, I'd love to see it! Also kind of interested in the rest of the night as well, huge Sondheim geek.

How much money do I have to pay to be the person who turns the pages of Stephen Sondheim’s sheet music?

@@canadeeana Thanks, but what's it called?
I love this song, but I’m not wild about this tale on it. Don’t get me wrong Katrina Lenk is a great singer, but this sounds to lounge singer to me. I like it more between mrs lovett and Toby.
Another gender-reversed performance by Katrina Lenk!
Lea Salonga's version of this, is more way beautifully sang.
