Not the Comrades video I wanted to make

We arrived in South Africa feeling optimistic my injury would improve enough to give Comrades a go but after days of doing everything I can to fix it, it was time to make the final call. So follow along today as we do a tour of the course, head to North Beach parkrun and chat about my decision.

Gutted for you Ben but absolutely the correct decision. Best wishes for a speedy and safe recovery. Go Sarah!
I'm really sorry you are having this difficult moment, it's gutting. You have 1 body and there are more comrades to come. Hope you are able to enjoy being there none the less and manage to see Sarah smash it!
I feel so bad for you. Having missed Boston in 2022 after busting my ankle only a few days before the race, I can totally identify. Also, after getting my redemption at this year's race I can say that the bad memories have faded and now it's just a funny story. In the meantime, wishing you a speedy recovery and a good race for Sarah!
After preparing for my first marathon ever (~20 week block, Jack Daniels) my patellar tendon gave up about 2 weeks before the marathon. It was nowhere near as big or important as comrades but still, I was really in shape (150h of preps), that took a small toll on my motivation and passion. That sucks, but we'll come back stronger.
Gutted for you, you never seem to catch a break with these big races.
No words will ever make this feel better Ben, but I just want to say THANK YOU, you inspire so many of us of all ages, sizes & levels to get out there each & every day & achieve incredible things we never think possible. Watching your videos is not only helpful but wholesome, genuine, down to earth & REAL, this video demonstrates to us all that setbacks can come at any moment, they are devastating but not the end.... You WILL be back to Comrades & we'll all be here to virtually cheer you over that line when you do. All love & best of luck Sarah!!! ❤💯
Oh Ben! Genuinely gutted for you! Sending thoughts and positive vibes your way
Form is temporary, class is permanent- you’re pure class Ben!!
There are so many appealing elements to your videos and one aspect that always stands out for me is your ability to be open and vulnerable with your words. Though we have all felt disappointments in our running, and lives, we might not all be able to express it so well and see the larger picture. Thanks for sharing the experience of Comrades and wishing you a quick recovery for your next event. (Best of luck to Sarah as well!)
Your words between 8:20-8:42 are immense. What an amazing person you are Ben. Can't wait to hear how Sarah got on.

Great guy.. I met you saturday morning, in front the hotel. You've told you were not running, and I replied I was with short breath, propably the freezing cold air conditioning of my flight. My voice was terrible (I heard in my video).. I wanted to say to you I bought your training plan, and it was very useful... to sum up, I finished my 9th Comrades with a PB (08:25). Very happy.. I hope to meet you next year and to get my Green Number.. let's get it done!
Oh Ben, I feel your pain on many levels. Your positive attitude sets such a good example for those of us who have gone through or are going through disappointments like this in running and in life. You are a class act. All the best to Sarah on Sunday.
Good to see you. Test the legs on Sunday. Sleep can do wonders. Anyway nobody will be affected if you pull out after few kms. Good luck to Sarah.
Gutted for you! Love your videos and enjoy following the ups & downs of your running journey. Wish you a speedy recovery and rehab of the ankle!!!
Excellent video Ben,Sarah loved every second. Hope for a speedy recovery and much more videos. 👍
So gutted for you Ben. You seem like such a genuinely kindhearted person, you don't deserve this, but you'll come back stronger. Wishing you a swift recovery 🙏🏻
I don't normally comment, but you seem like a genuinely good person and it sucks to hear this news for you. Keep your head up and its a good reminder that as you say running is a privilege

Ah man, this is heartbreaking. Really sorry to hear that... You'll definitely do it next year. Best wishes for the recovery, we're all sending you big hugs.
Ben, so sorry to hear this. Enjoy the energy, lots to achieve still this year, good luck with those goals.
oh no. so sorry to hear about that. hope you get well soon! good luck to Sarah!! u got this
I'm sorry to hear this. It's difficult to walk away from a race you've been training so hard for. Hope the leg heals and you can come back stronger!
Ahh Ben . I think we’ve all been in similar places and it’s painful but there’s literally nothing you can do other than look after yourself. That’s running for you and why we love it - you’ll be back to smash it again that’s for sure. Good luck to Sarah xx👊🏃♀️🏃🏻♀️
Gutted for you Ben! Wishing you a very speedy recovery! 🙌🏼
Huge respect for you making a ridiculously difficult decision. Fingers crossed for a full recovery soon 🤞🏻
The way that you mindfully accept the way things are, and don't let them throw into the self-punishment of wanting things to be different, is the most brilliant example you've shown on the most brilliant of channels. There's a specific running lesson - don't run when you shouldn't - AND a broader life lesson - self-care through acceptance, all wrapped up so perfectly. Bravo!
So sorry to hear about your injury. Hope it heals quickly and looking forward to seeing the video of Sarah running this year and you both running it next year.
Good luck for next year, the right move! I hope the healing is brief 👍 such a hard call to make!
Same thing happened to me, sprained my ankle one week before my first marathon. I decided to just try anyway and it was a brutal experience😂. It took me 5 hours to finish and it set me back a month because I was so sore afterward. I think you've made a smart decision!
Sorry to hear and amazed by your cheerfulness. Good luck to Sarah and for you next year.
Really sorry to hear that Ben! Wise decision 👍 hope you're back on the roads soon. Good luck Sarah
Really gutted for you Ben as I know how much you wanted to do this event but you made the right call and there will always be another chance. Wishing you a speedy recovery and all the best
We will support you next year Ben!!! Didn’t see this video up until now and was searching for you on the Comrades App; and saw you didn’t start. Congratulations on Sarah very good race and time. Hope to see you both next year. Great video of Umhlanga ; non the less!!!!!!!! Thanks for sharing it on your platform!
Sorry to hear, Ben. We love all the inspiration you provide and you probably don’t know how much positivity your content makes people feel, but take care. Also, I twisted my ankle 2 weeks ago so cannot run my first marathon next weekend; freak roll on some debris in the road. Hey ho, you also have Sarah who seems like a resilient-rock and she’ll be running for you. Keep your pecker up!! 👍
Such a brave decision. I'm so sorry. I pray you'll be able to do it next year, with no challenges. Enjoy the rest of your stay in SA.
Sorry to hear Ben but your making the right call. Hopefully your luck will change soon you deserve an all out effort when your fully fit! Good luck Sarah!
Gutted was looking forward to seeing this one, Go Sarah 🔥 speedy recovery 🙏
I never had that unfortunate event and was always able to do the races. But I feel a lot for you, we can actually see the amount of effort that went into your prep. Not being able to it… what a though blow. But you have your sprits high! Speedy recovery
Hard luck Ben, was hoping to see you on the road. Well, we will see you at next years UP run. I’ll definitely be taking part.
Great meeting you at the park run, thanks for all the informative videos 😊
Thank you for the lovely video. What a great atmosphere. So sorry you couldn’t start.
So sorry Ben. Sending you love from the US. Good luck to Sarah.
Really gutted for you. I spent 4 years in South Africa at uni, and a fair bit of time in Durban and hillcrest where my grandparents lived. No place like it on earth. I’ll be here to see your comrades 2024 video👍👍
Really sorry to hear this Ben. I hope you are recovering well ❤
So gutted for you, I certainly know what you are feeling, I was out training on my bike for my first triathlon, crashed and broke my collarbone, now post 6 weeks and starting all over, missed 2 half marathons as well
Sorry to hear that Ben, hope you get better soon, good luck Sarah
Sorry to hear your bad news Ben. It's a tough call to make and perhaps the best not to run. You will be back. Indeed was a beautiful morning at North Beach Parkrun today.
Hard luck Ben! Keep up your spirits Good luck Sarah!
Gutted for you. Wishing you a speedy recovery
So sorry to hear Ben. Keep your head up plenty more running for you once the ankle is healed.
Only watched this video after finishing my run, having tried to look up your result on the app to find none. You still got to see lovely Durban, the best way to do winter. Speedy recovery! see you next year, might even be another downrun.
Feel for you Ben! Just one of those things! Put your focus into cheering everyone on! You're a legend sir!!!!
Heart broken !!! Was excited to see you running !!! Take care and wish you a speedy recovery
oh man, devastated, i was looking forward to your video in my country. will have to wait for next year then. please recover soon and hope to see your next video soon too
🤗Take care and get well soon🤗We all know you can do it next year🤗Best wishes🙏
so sorry you had an injury, recover well and be back next year for the up run
in my opinion the most difficult thing in sports is being ready for a specific day and time. so many things must fit well together to be truely ready for an event. i wish you good recovery Ben and i think we can all feel how gutted you are. Good luck to Sarah for a great run!
What a great way to look at it.amazing so positive.get better soon ben.and go Sara have a great race and take it all in
Wishing you a swift recovery, Ben, and I hope Sarah had a good race!
Hi Ben, so so gutted for you and sure you will comeback stronger than ever. better safe than sorry, difficult but wise decision.
Sorry to hear that Ben!… Glad to hear you will back next year to try again. Looking forward to that.
God bless you pal. Gutted for you. Hopefully I’ll see you there next year.
So gutted for you, though well done for being sensible! Hope you’re back running again soon ☺️
Ben you have such a good attitude. Good luck Sarah!
Such a tough set of circumstances Ben, worst feeling when your hard work and dedication gets derailed by a freak accident so close to your goal. Can hear the emotion in your voice - but will be so bloody gratifying to see you cross that line next year. Onwards and upwards! Can't wait to see Sarah smash it today!!!
So sorry to hear that Ben, I hope you're not too down about it. Loads more races this year to be ready for! Speedy recovery
I'm from Durban and I've been looking forward to you racing Comrades for the last few years, gutted for you! Hope to see you again in the future!
Gutting as it is you should be extremely proud of how well you handle these difficult moments. This is why you’re one of the most inspirational runner around. Huge respect as always!
Coincidentally I sprained my ankle a couple days ago with a marathon scheduled for next week. Wishing you a speedy recovery
I was there last week for IM70.3 Durban, and they told me about this great race ... Great to see it again. and sorry for your injury, but maybe we see each other next year in Durban... 👊
It takes courage to make a decision like this to avoid further injury. Good luck to Sarah!
What a tough video to haveto make let alone making that decision. Following your channel, the story, the planning, the appreciation you have that you can do this and make a living from your passion - feel for you. Glad SA has treated you well otherwise, and will keep on watching to see you back next year and take on what must truly be one of the greatest events on the running calendar. Speedy recovery! (maybe go get a Nandos to start the recovery process :) ) Take care.
I'm so gutted for you 😢 it must have been an incredibly hard decision to make. But you are absolutely right to think of long term health. Best of luck with future endeavours and of course best of luck to Sarah
Sadness Ben, but much better to heal up first, there is always next year. Hope you enjoyed your stay. Good luck and hope to see you run it next year.
Sorry to hear mate! Tough call but the right one! It’ll be there every year! Go smash it next year. 💥
Feeling for you right now. Not sure how you cope with this emotionally after such a commitment to a single goal. Puts my having to pull out of my first 10k for 30 years into perspective! You are truly inspirational and this video has given my own recovery the positive boost I needed.
Ben, sorry to hear that, total bummer. You still got our full support through the highs and the lows. Injuries suck, but it's all part of the sport. Wishing Sarah the best race! I am looking forward to her repping the race for you.
Best decision!! Feel better soon
life is long mate, have a smashing time down there in south africa! soak up the atmosphere, enjoy yourself and make great memories with sarah :-)
So sorry Ben. You have to listen to your body. You have a lifetime of running ahead of you. I did Comrades last year and it is a great run. I hope to be back next year so see you there! God bless you.
Get better Ben we will see you here next year! 🙌
Sensible decision Ben, gutted for you but these things happen unfortunately. Plenty more races in the calendar and it’s better to enjoy it next year than regret doing it this year . Good luck Sarah 💪🏻
Ah Ben! Was looking forward to looking out for you on screen. They'll be many more races!
We are all feeling for you Ben…you are so inspiring with the best attitude towards your passion. Go Sarah
Oh dude 🥲 You‘re fine. I wish you the best recovery you can possibly have that you can hammer again as early as possible 🔥🔥🔥 So in the meantime be positive because it‘ll help the recovery process so I think 🤗💪
I can relate to you mate. I have to pull out a month before my first marathon because of knee swelling. Better to heal than to have a long term damage for the sake of one race.
Really like the points made at 8. :20-8:42 as well. Really good message to be spreading in the running community. Respect 🙏🏼
Finished having not run for the last 4 weeks. It was hard, but glad I stood on the start line and gave it a (very slow) go. Was actually pain free for most of it. 2 to go to get green. See you next year
You will get there again ben , keep it up we are rooting for you mate
Runnings cruel at times Ben but 100% the right decision im looking forward to your comrades video for next year's race , have a speedy recovery with the ankle
Great job making the right call! High emotions can take you to the point where you think you can do anything.
Hope we see you at this year's Comrades. Up run for the win!
So sorry to hear
Bad luck Ben. One year it will come together. Hope you can still have some positive experiences on your trip to SA.
It is allways a new race👍good recovery 👌😊
These things always seem to happen just as you’re feeling your best! It’s happened to me twice this year where I was hitting a real good spell and ended up injured and set back both times. Good to see you taking the sensible option though, I’ve definitely done those runs you know you shouldn’t do and made things worse!
Smart, strong decision, Ben. Well done. Heal up!

Great to meet you today. Congrats again to Sarah, strong running! If the day wasn't inspiring enough I flew out of Durban with Dr Vic, he completed his 45th Comrades today. 💯% you'll be back at Comrades in 2024. All the best for a speedy recovery 🏃🏃🏃
So sorry to hear 😢 hopefully I can join next year!
Really sorry to hear that Ben good luck sarah
Damn mate, that’s too bad. Have a nice time in Durban. Good luck Sarah!
lovely to see my home town. Done 2 ups and one down. It is a race that every marathon runner should experience to test you mental strength to the absolute limit
