When you think about the hopes his wife must have had for John after her passing, the entire series gets just a bit sadder. She gave him something else to love and care for, something else to live for, and she died believing that would help bring peace to his life. But that opportunity was snuffed out in the blink of an eye, and John Wick never found peace. Not until death.

If you listen to the way Winston says words at the fauxneral and remember their talk of gravestones on the boat, he likely didn't die. My theory is that they'll do a few movies without him following Akira for killing or believing to have killed Caine in the post-credits scene. Because he was off the table, and had immunity from the table, much like you can't kill on continental grounds, I believe this will come back to bite her and she will have to eventually take on the entire table itself and finish what John started. I think then, and only then, will his need to return come into play.

This is one way of looking at it, a more cynical way is that he's just become a less interesting character. John Wick wasn't a one man army in the first movie, he was an expert. Whenever he took on multiple enemies, he has some kind of distinct advantage playing in his favor, like his own house or a crowded club. He was vulnerable, the action was tense. He has to be saved from death by Willem Dafoe in this very scene. In the sequels, he's an invincible pistol prodigy, it's like he's using wall hacks in a shooter video game-- and that's even not my words, that's from a critic who loved the 4th movie. The first didn't feel like a video game at all, and with the personal element to the story and John's expressive personality more or less gone these films have sort of devolved into a really well produced power fantasy. I enjoy the sequels a lot, but they don't work very well as sequels to this film, which I thought had a perfect ending.

@@TheNwahDango This is exactly it, he has had nothing to do since the first movie and has been a passenger in his own films. There's no character arc, it's purely been "Mission Objective: Survive" for all three sequels as everyone else are the ones that incite his story. He's completely reactionary to everything, and almost never actually shows ingenuity, planning, or complexity anymore. He uses his magical suit plot armor to consistently save him, which causes his choreography to be extremely hare-brained and lazy. The sequels are fun watches, but they're poorly written and are basically parodies of the movie they're attempting to follow-up. Really sad what happened to the character.
That line always gets me; "killed that from me", it makes no sense, it's not a logistically sound sentence, but we all know what it means and feel the intensity of it. His one last chance at peace after his wife's death. One last living thing he can cling to and the last gift his wife left him was, really, "killed from him". Such a clunky line but delivered with such powerful conviction...man I love this character lol
@tek512
7 ай бұрын
How do you figure it made no sense? What Iosef killed was John's hope; the last tie to his restored humanity. In other words, Iosef killed a part of John Wick - the part his wife nurtured and loved, the part that allowed him to love her in turn. John was utterly ruthless and cold to a fault before Helen. She *gave* him a heart and a new purpose, and that dog was meant to preserve those things after she was gone. If your complaint is one of grammar, then I do feel it prudent to note the structure is sound according to the rules of both American and British English. Killing is after all an action, and something on the receiving end of that action would be killed.

John and Viggo have perhaps the most fascinating Protagonist/Antagonist relationships you'll see in movies. It's almost like a twisted Father/Son relationship. Viggo really really likes John. The only reason he is trying to kill John is because he has a duty to protect his son. You can see here how rattled Viggo gets when John explains exactly why it's about the dog. Viggo gets it, and feels for John in that moment because he likes John. And you can tell that John really really likes Viggo. Which is why he will kill everyone else to get to his son, but won't kill him. John doesn't kill Viggo here, because he knows that Viggo was doing what he had to do at that point. Once Viggo stepped aside, John would have never killed him. Not until Viggo kills his friend does John set out to kill him. And even then, they have a mutual respect in their last fight. John is finishing it because Viggo made himself a part of finishing it.

This scene is what makes the whole series work. He’s vulnerable, he’s raw. The death of the dog might have excused the deaths in the house fight, but by the 60th kill, it doesn’t really work anymore. This scene shows that under that suave calculated demeanor is a truly broken man. He lost the love of his life and the chance at peaceful future, a chance to truly change for the better. I’ve only watched Keanu in these movies and Toy Story 4, so it’s a strange thing. In Toy Story 4, his character is different from his usual roles and it shows he does have range and charisma, and it shows he can play other things besides brooding action hero, but in John Wick, he sounds like he has zero charisma and zero chemistry with anyone. It’s possible it’s because John is antisocial because I found something similar in Daredevil because in that show, Kingpin is portrayed as being autistic, that’s why he has no chemistry or charisma.
Having received a puppy upon my ex's passing of cancer in 2010, the John Wick 1 movie hit home with me. Pet parents will understand.

I really wish John had more dialogue like this in the later movies. More story in general would also be nice, the fourth movie was amazing and action packed, but it was so action packed that after a bit you start to get a little fatigued with it.

Yeah, don't get me wrong, it was fun, but it kinda felt like one or of those scenes could have been cut or reduced in length a bit. Hell, you could cut down the going to kill that huge dude scene to them dropping off Wick and him delivering proof of death and the movie would nothing

The less line Keanu has the better. Especially since he's literally surrounded by Oscar winning and nominated actors later it just is very apparent his lack of acting ability. He's best utalized in limited lines. Plus his character is more about action than talking.
@jaketstephens3932

@@FFmaxxx Yeah, but I don't think most people watching John Wick would mind if Keanu had more lines, especially when he had many more lines in the first movie and nobody seemed to care. Besides, if he gets more lines of dialogue that gives other Oscar winning and nominated actors more time to show off their acting capabilities while playing off of his character.
That speech alone from John Wick made me love this movie even more.
I always thought Viggo said "oh God" cause of how petty he thought John was being. Now I realize he said that because now he truly knows just how much his son ROYALLY fucked up.

The NY Times posted a short article on how, for a gruff, taciturn, and exceedingly dangerous guy, John Wick sure has a lot of true friends, friends willing to go to the mat for him. But here is, I think, the point: JW is something that his whole world of weirdly formal bad men admires and aspires to, but rarely achieves: both the badass to end all badasses, and a genuine man of honor. And the honor is what counts. He's what every one of them would be if they could, if they had the strength of character to live their convictions.

Don’t forget, the series was inspired by Marvel, a two-dimensional comic world where contradictions are tolerated if not encouraged. A character as likable as John Wick could not temperamentally bring himself to kill strangers in cold blood for pay. But what we see in the movie is cartoon killing, rapid-fire, eliminating only baddie cartoon characters. Audiences can enjoy the nice guy/assassin contradiction in character because they see that John kills only bad people.
That hand over your son or die screaming alongside him sent chills down my spine
You don't fuck with Neo and the Green Goblin
THIS is the John Wick I wanted in the rest of the franchise
Having seen them all now... I can say with certainty that I really wish they'd have done the last couple movies like this one... Grounded, gritty, realistic, low budget badassery!

this is what I love about the first movie, John was an extremeful skill assassin, but human nevertheless. Dafoe character saved his life more than once. My thoughts after watching JW4. Enjoyable but the zaniness is cranked up for each subsequent movie. In the 1st and 2nd movies, him being shot and beaten up left him battered, bruised and bloody, now there's barely a scratch after fight scenes. Yeah, there's some suspension of disbelief for these movies, but the first couple ones had a decent semblance of believability. Now, magic bulletproof forcefield jackets, falling off buildings constantly, blind assassins, etc are the norm.

@@k_tess I winced when I heard a reviewer who loved the fourth movie make the video game analogy, since that's how I felt all the way back at 2. In the first, they reference his final job where he apparently killed like 30 guys and it made him mysterious and scary, now he kills that many in a single scene. Nuance gone. They reference how he killed somebody with a pencil, so of course they have to SHOW him kill a guy with a pencil in the sequel. It's pretty vapid once you look past how impressive the stunts are.
I find it so amusing that even though john is tied to a chair, and one would naturally assume that he's in a weaker position, when he shows his rage viggo is still taken aback. fascinating.
A lot of people say they saw more emotion from John during this one movie well it was because he lost his wife and the dog which was her final gift to him you hear it from the bartender that he seemed vulnerable was because John was never vulnerable he was a ruthless killer and as we saw in the sequels he had become that killer again
Like my grandpa used to say. "No matter how bad things seem, you can always count on Willam Dafoe."
I like how Viggo acts like he has better things to do than deal with an upset assassin, knowing the repercussions.

Yeah, the best gift from his dying wife was that dog she picked for him. She knew the life he used to lead and having another to love, to focus on would help him. Its become a cliche that the bad guy leaves while the good guy gets killed (and of course it goes wrong). In this movie it works. You can feel that Viggo has a little guilt in him that his son screwed up and set this in motion. Viggo feels badly so he doesn't want to see John die.
I love how in this scene compare to the rest of the movie and the franchise he is extremely expressive, contrasting with his personality trougth the rest of the movie
