I always saw Romeo and Juliet as a cautionary tale for what could happen if you fell in love with someone and instantly decided that you were in love with them without thinking things through

It's not a love story, it's a tragedy. It's about love destroyed by hate. It's about shortsightedness of the families and all the destruction is causes. The Prince tries to warn them throughout. The last scene is one of Shakespeare's most powerful: "See what a scourge is laid upon your hate? That Heaven finds means to kill your joys with love." The last line is that it's the saddest tale, not the most romantic. "....Never was a story of more woe than this of Juliet and her Romeo."

I once played Ferdinand in The Tempest, and I once thought to myself: They're the opposite of Romeo and Juliet in that he and Miranda have a more believable romance, despite not being the main focus of their story. That's when I realized that Romeo and Juliet are more plot devices rather than people.

That was a great take on Romeo and Juliette. Sadly many 'fools for love' types would glorify the convoluted ideals of the hormone engorged duet rather than examine. Which I think is the crux of the argument. Between those who glorify and those who don't. The fact that there are such ways to look at it even if it initially seems shallow, makes it understandably classic and is a feature of much of Shakespeare.

Ah I've Never noticed the chemistry between Romeo and Juliet, but you made a good point about that. As I was looking at the movie and parts of the theatrical play, they didn't really talk about each other's personal lives or anything like that, so they didn't know who they were, exactly. They just talked about how much they love each other etc etc, but it was still an entertaining story. Very tragic as well. The Leonardo DiCaprio's version was alright. It wasn't taking itself seriously.

In my opinion, Romeo and Juliet is more like a cautionary tale than a romance. It shows the dangers of love at first sight, and how it can end very badly. Maybe not as extreme as death, but you get the idea

I always saw Romeo and Juliet to be more about the pointless conflict between the families, rather than the romance. They were so determined to hate each other that they would not even give an innocent thing like first love a chance, and they lost their children because of it.

Also note: during the time the story was set (as in, the original play) Romeo was probably twice Julliet's age. Or more. Its suspected she would probably have only been 12 or 13, and he was in his 20's or early 30's. Creepy.

Of course they don't have any moments.... The play spans over three days. They got married the second day. It's, more than anything, a tale of how feuds cause pointless bloodshed and of how you shouldn't throw everything aside to persue love. At least, that's my take. This play is truly poetry; each person is meant to take their own lessons or meaning from it. There's no right or wrong.

myself, i think this was Shakespeare telling a cautionary tale about teenaged lust. he impregnated a 19 year old woman when he was barely pubescent and had to marry her. his life was worse as a result. this play is more about prejudice than love, but it's also shakespeare saying "don't make the mistake i did".

When I was 14 and in High School my English teacher (Also the Senior Film Lit teacher) showed us the 1968 version of Romeo and Juliet. None of us got it at the time but it was perfect for him to make us watch and dissect it for what it really was beneath the surface: Two stupid teenagers who have no idea what love really is and cause drama around everyone they know for their own selfish reasons.

I think that this is a good representation of infatuation of young people, teens and whatnot, taken to the extreme. Its not love, but I think the idea of infatuation or "love at first site" is an ideal that people wish were a reality, so that's why it has such staying power.

I once read a rather interesting take on the play that it isn't a romance or a tragedy but rather something of a parody. The fact these two kids (what were they 15 and 13 in the original?) fall in love at first sight and with seemingly absolutely no chemistry beyond the fact they are in love as Critic said was deliberate in the Bard's part to point out how silly many romances in theater are, and the fact the play ends with the pair going full emo and killing themselves because they'll

We also should consider how life was back then. In the past, they didn't live ad long as we do today, particullarly in the Medieval times. For all they knew, they would have been very lucky to rech the age of fourty, so when they found love for the first time, I don't think they had the time to consider their love as an everlasting one. They would just fall in love, and wouldn't take in exam the partner as much as the kind of love they shared.

Romeo and Juliet is a cautionary tale. And a tragedy -- you know, as in a genre in which the main characters fall prey to their own weaknesses and cannot escape their fate. Plus, the notion of "true love" is somewhat alien to Shakespeare's time period. Marriage for political or social reasons was the norm. Love (as in "passion") was considered dangerous and foolish. "Falling in love" was not a good enough reason for marrying someone.

While it is true that from a modern point of view Romeo and Juliet has its obvious flaws. But we indeed have to look at it from more then one perspective. From this story alot of the cliché love story effects spawned, love at first sight, forbidden love etc etc. The reason why this is still idealized as the most famous love story is of course the guilty pleasures it's creations have made. And of course that for its time, it was a great story.

Missed my point...movie goers tend to focus only on the lovers angle which is actually the simplest and least tragic part of the story..When at the heart of the tragedy is the inability to set aside one's biases...using others and disregard their happiness to satisfy one's own wants...and the inability to forgive...You can take out the love story and replace it was friendship...and the story itself would still be as tragic at its core...

Of course they aren't in love, multiple characters in the story state that fact. Hell, the idea of love that we have now--talking to one another, getting along, picking a mate from any class, marrying of enjoyment not stability--is a relatively new idea that didn't quite exist back then. Many of his complaints are actually steps in our current direction, back then at least, though the story itself is more about what happens to youth when they begin to act sexually.
