Here's a crazy idea: why do companies constantly try to remake good films? Efforts where it will be hard to top, much less be of the same quality? Why not remake BAD films? Maybe films that were mainstream but are very bad quality wise? You're more likely to succeed, and you'd get more support from movie critics for actually trying to improve real cinematic crap that's out there.

Can we once and for all put an end to the canard that Burton's 'Charlie & The Chocolate Factory' is truer to the book than Mel Stuart's 'Willy Wonka'? Burton's film restores a couple of minor, superficial things -- the Oompa Loompa chants from the book, the ancillary character of Charlie's father -- but adds a metric ton of new stuff, including a third act that completely betrays the original novel. Burton's film strays much, much further from the the book than Stuart's does. Wonka's childhood, Wonka's father, the fact that it's Wonka who really needs the Buckets and not the other way around? That's all the remake. Characters like Mike Teevee and (arguably) Wonka himself are all but reinvented from the ground up. But those Oompa Loompa chants are word-for-word, so Burton's is somehow deemed the "truer" adaptation. Oh, and the squirrels from the book are here, too. Big whoop. Stuart's film makes a few changes, but they're for good reason. The addition of Slugworth's Everlasting Gobstopper test makes it so that Charlie doesn't win through sheer attrition. He has to earn that victory at the end. The fizzy lifting drink shows that Charlie, too, is fallible. And ditching Charlie's father just makes sense. The character is dull and serves no dramatic function. Without him, the story becomes about Wonka's search for a son and Charlie's search for a father. With him still in the picture, the connection between Wonka and Charlie is much less resonant.

THANK YOU!!!! I have always thought that the original was, in some ways, truer to the book than the Burton version. Really, neither is very accurate to the book, but that doesn't really matter much. At least the Stuart version kept the same tone and charm of the book. RIP Gene Wilder :(

I really feel like both Slugworth and the fizzy lifting drink performed the same dramatic function, and the fizzy lifting drink was done worse. They're both honesty tests, but not only is Grandpa Joe the one egging Charlie on to try it, (Despite being the moral standing for Charlie in both the book and the remainder of the movie, so I don't get it) meaning it wasn't Charlie who decided to do wrong, but he was allowed a chance to repent when the other kids had horrible things happen to them without a chance for a "sorry". If that scene had followed the book's logic, he would have gotten chopped up by the ceiling fan. And I don't understand what you mean by father/son relationship in the movie as well- Wonka was more of a mystical mentor, I thought, and Grandpa Joe had the father role. The Slugworth honesty test was great, though- much closer to the original book's intention. After all, Wonka wouldn't want someone who's as tempted by something as common and silly as money- he wants someone to carry on the wonder. That was a good change, actually, I feel that Charlie did earn his victory by not being tempted, rather than just not touching anything. Just my thoughts, though.

It's definitely an interesting character study and I really want to see the original film.

@@ragejoona431 But at least with those remakes of Dracula and Frankenstein, there was still some connection to their original source material. We at least have Victor Frankenstein creating his monster, with the monster desolating his life by murdering Frankenstein's family, and we at least have Dracula seducing Mina Harker to the dark side, with Van Helsing and John Harker fighting to save her soul. The Haunting went off the rails from being the original psychological show-don't tell study to being an earlier bombastic Haunted Mansion movie before The Haunted Mansion with Eddie Murphy.

  • @WerewolfUlrich

It's a remake. G'98 was meant to take place in a different universe than the original Godzillas. No one knew of Godzilla's existence in the movie prior to his appearance. A spin-off would mean it takes place in the universe of the original source material and an adaption is making a film out of a written work like a novel.

Spielberg produced "The Haunting", while Stephen King did the "Rose Red"-miniseries, which is in any way far superior to this pile of crap! Worst remake for me is Rob Zombie's Halloween. Carpenter clearly showed that the minimal amount of explanation we got from Loomis on Michael's mental state in the original was enough. So right off the bat Zombie fucks all over that by trying to "explain" it for like the first half of the movie*. And then not content with ending there he managed to make an even worse film with his Halloween 2, the worst film in the whole series, and when we're talking about a series that has had a movie where Michael rapes his underage niece (producer's cut of 6) and a movie where Busta Rhymes beats Michael with karate (8), that's saying something. *what's funny is that psychologically explaining your antagonist can work, you just know how to restrain yourself. Hannibal Rising was a piece of shit because it showed way too much and included stupid elements like Nazis tricking Hannibal into eating his sister. The TV series Hannibal fixes this as we get far less information about Hannibal's past other than little bits here and there and when his sister's fate is revealed Hannibal says he couldn't understand the concept of his sister loving him and vice versa and eventually rationalized this as her deliberately influencing him so he killed and ate her. THAT works because it's simple and to the point.
