LEGO Motion Studios You have no idea about the amount of SPITE involved in Fox studios movie making process. They will *never* surrender an IP to Marvel, never again. Why? Because every time they give up anything, someone far more competent Marvel, turns it into a gold mine. They would rather watch their IP burn than give Marvel a penny.

I get why you think they shouldn't have dimmed the lights so much, but I personally think they should've dimmed the lights even more, maybe to a point where we couldn't see anything. And maybe dim the sound so we couldn't hear anything either. Yeah, that would make this movie much better.

just a nerd *_* Yeah, boring is one of the worst things a movie can be in my opinion. Movies are made to entertain, so even if some movies fail to meet their full intentions, if they are entertaining to watch, they can still be appreciated in some way. Boring movies fail at that, so there's even less to appreciate!

Okay, maybe X-Men may be the exception. As for Spider-Man, while they [the first two] were enjoyable in their own right, they still fall into those early 2000's clichés, for better or worse, more specifically the first movie. Hell, the first movie has an ending song with a soft (read: Angsty Fake Hard) rock song with a gravely singer. Yeah, I know there are people that like "Hero" but I just couldn't take that song seriously.

I think the problem with everyone trying to do the "Chris Nolan dark gritty-ness" thing is that it only works for certain characters. If the character lends itself to it, then it'll work. As Rob pointed out it worked for Daredevil, because Daredevil lends itself perfectly to that dark and gritty realism. Blade and Logan are other examples. Fantastic Four however just doesn't work well with dark and gritty realism. You can absolutely have serious moments with them, and those moments can work (The Thing wanting to look "normal" for example), but an entire movie that's dark, gritty, and serious? No, that's not the Fantastic Four and it just feels wrong. Also, Rob, Arrow season 5 has so far been great. Or at least a big improvement over seasons 3 & 4. I say stick with it.

  • @alysonblackwood3099

    @alysonblackwood3099

RandomShinigami7 couldn't agree more. The Fantastic Four were a product of the idealistic space age so there's only so dark and serious you can go without losing the soul of the team.

I've been saying this ever since The Dark Knight. A dark and serious tone works for characters that are dark and serious. You can't just slap it on any hero and expect it to work because all these characters were created to entertain in different ways, to appeal to different audiences. But no, the studios just want that one magic formula they can apply to everything to make money, and they are convinced that because Batman was the most successful example, they must use that formula. And they keep doing it even though it fails most of the time.

  • @MelMelodyWerner

Eh, I totally disagree on Daredevil. I'm a huge DD fan in terms of the comics, but personally I dislike the Nolan style of fake realism which the Netflix series aped and think Daredevil works better as a mix of light and dark elements. About the same balance Spider-Man needs. Still having some heavy moments which are gut-wrenching and gritty but a lot of hope and sense of humor with that. But Fantastic 4 definitely needs some more fun and idealism. The first two F4 films got that good on paper, and I thought they did a decent job of bringing them to film.

And you know, the whole thing about Johnny Storm and his father being black compared to Sue Storm being white: that could play into the whole mismatched family element that is the Fantastic Four. There's a reason they're called Marvel's First Family, because in spite of how unusual they are in terms of their powers, they still have that bond and the theme of family going on (no one please mention the whole Family thing in the Fast and Furious movies). And that whole interracial family thing could've played into it, but like Rob said, it was more there just to get a rise out of people. And because Michael B. Jordan was also in Chronicle, so yea.

trc2rockon That would have required competence though. And looking at all of Fox's superhero team films they just don't know how to make a great superhero team film (even the good team films are mostly solos masquerading as team film). And even the solo films (Logan & Deadpool) apparently need strong willed creators & stars (Jackman & Reynolds) who are willing to push against the studio to get their vision on the big screen.

What I hate the most about Hollywood is that the studio executives, being the morons they always are, look at successful films but they _never_ dissect the film and see what made it such a great movie, then take some of those elements and implement them in the newer movies. They instead take a random stupid aspect of the movie and say "If it worked in the Avengers, it'll work here, right?"

Look, I'm not the biggest fan of George Lucas, but, it sucks to know that if Star Wars was still with Fox and George Lucas had directed The Force Awakens exactly the same way it is now people would say it sucks. It sucks that people praise these kinds of movies based the studio and not on the quality of the films.

This reminds me so much of my reaction to seeing the movie Daredevil. And then, when Rob said that he really liked the FF comics, I realized why. There definitely seems to be, in general, an direct connection between how much a person loves the source material, and how much they viscerally hate bad adaptations. I went to a comic store many years ago, and there was somebody else there complaining... vehemently... about Smallville. Now, I really *liked* Smallville. But then, I never read Superman. :)

15:34 The way Rob says "And this bugs the shit outta me..." just restored my will to live. In fact, everything about his delivery of those few words was glorious, right down to the body language. Gazing off into the distance, that arm movement... like something straight out of the The Sopranos. I really don't know what they're talking about, I thought the 00s Chris Evans Jessica Alba Fantastic 4 movies were awesome. Sure, they're not exactly HEROES as much as they are celebrities, but it IS the Fantastic 4. You get to see them use their powers, they have entertaining chemistry. The Thing getting hit by a fucking truck and not moving an inch is badass. Dr. Doom's descent into madness was interesting. Galactus as a giant interstellar stormcloud was weird, but the Silver Surfer was PERFECT. There were a few funny lines thrown in there too. Fun Fact: In the Ultimate Universe, Nick Fury is directly designed after Sam Jackson so much so, that he contacted Marvel and said that he was fine with it as long as he got the role in any movie with him.

How is it close minded to have a favorite actor? I'm sure there are roles played by awesome actors that DEFINE those roles. It's not closemindedness. It's personal preference. One day they will HAVE to recast fury. I'll just always view Jackson as my preferred Fury. Or is your favorite Fury Hasselhoff? Oh...that's it isn't it? I'm sorry.

The movie basically tried to give Fantastic Four the Batman Begins treatment, and proved that a lot more went into making Batman Begins good than just making everything darker. Still, I feel like if this movie had come out in 2006, it still would have bombed critically, but it probably would have done better at the box office. The pendulum has swung the other way now, people want lighthearted superheroes with tons of Whedonesque one-liners.

I was annoyed at the Human Torch being black for two reasons, none of them being because I'm racist. Firstly, it was an obvious cry for attention. "Look at us, he's black now, isn't that cool/outraging?!" Secondly, it annoyed me for the same reason it annoys me when a character who has red hair in the book is blonde in the movie adaptation. I just don't like differences in pre-established characters' looks. If you're adapting something, adapt the character designs as well. It ain't that hard; all you need is some hair dye and lenses in most cases. Or well, in this case casting someone with a different skin colour. I would have reacted the same way if they, say, made Blade or War Machine white. Or asian, or whatever. What I'm saying is, don't disregard all the people who were against the change as "racists".

We don't need another Fantastic Four movie. Let it cool off for a few years. What we NEED is a seriously good Doctor Doom movie. R-rated, because he damn well earns it. Show him as he SHOULD be. Brilliant, brutal, driven, and freaking scary as hell. Involve his REAL backstory. His powers have nothing to do with the Four, he's a dark sorcerer and a mad scientist with a vendetta against Mephisto. He couldn't care less about Susan, he loves Valeria. Despite killing Valeria to imbue his armor with her soul. Doom is one of Marvel's single best villains of all time, but the movies keep doing him wrong. Because he needs more screentime than a villain gets. He needs his own movie to fully deliver on what Doom is supposed to be. He's intimidating, powerful, brilliant, and thoroughly ruthless.

Fox has made it clear they won't let the Fantastic 4 property go so easily, which is why Marvel's trying to drown them out by not doing any Fantastic 4 comics now. Though they did let go of Ronan and a few other characters which should've been in the F4 bundle so who knows? But yeah, Fox giving back the rights to at least Doctor Doom would be amazing. Marvel hasn't done a villain solo movie but that'd be dope as hell. I'd also like to see Dormammu get a solo movie, that could tie Doctor Strange and Doom together well.

I feel like DC has always had an edge over Marvel in television. The DCAU is already a big catalogue of solid work, Young Justice, Batman: The Brave and the Bold, the original Teen Titans, their new Live-action stuff etc. Marvel has of course had good TV too, but they've been a lot less fortunate with their stuff than DC, so it's to some extent not even their fault. Spectacular Spider-Man was canceled, Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes was canceled, Young Justice by contrast is coming back for another season.

Like you mentioned, there were some brief moments where you could almost see a decent movie, but they just couldn't pull it off. Personally, I enjoy Fantastic Four (2005), to me it's got the really wacky tone of FF that I remember from what limited comics of theirs that I read. From imdb:The trivia items below may give away important plot points. The draft of the script written by Josh Trank and Jeremy Slater was different from the final film in numerous ways: 1. The released film takes broad strokes from the original script. 2. The first act of the original draft is the first 2/3rds of the final movie. 3. The original script is closer to the MCU in tone. 4. The script features the origins of the Fantastic Four, Doctor Doom, Galactus, Mole Man, Herbie the Robot, and the FantastiCar. 5. Ben is still Reed's muscle, keeping him safe from bullies. This aspect makes Reed's decision to bring Ben along on the trip to the Negative Zone make more sense. 6. Reed goes to the Baxter Building as part of a science scholarship; there he meets Sue, who is working with a Dr. Elder, who is on the cutting edge of his biology field making "moloids". Reed also meets Victor Von Doom, who takes the nerdy Reed to parties, where he meets and falls for Sue. Meanwhile Ben has become sad as Reed has stopped calling him, and he has made a choice - he's skipping college and has enlisted in the army. 7. There's no older Dr. Storm character. Sue calls her brother, Johnny, as a last resort when they're about to take their trip to the Negative Zone. 8. Victor Von Doom is actually a spy for his homeland of Latveria and is leaking Reed's research to them. 9. When the team uses their Quantum Gate, it's because their school refuses to let them use it, which causes the team to use it under the cover of night. Reed calls in Ben, the person he trusts the most, even if their relationship is strained. Sue is staying behind, Johnny helping her man the controls from this side of the portal. Ben gets promised that he'll be the first human to step foot on the other side of the portal. 10. When they go into the Negative Zone, they find an alien city with its entire population dead. They also find their destroyer: Galactus. 11. Galactus seemingly kills Victor with Dark Matter, while Reed and Ben make it to the module, but it's not working; on the other side of the portal Sue is working feverishly to fix the circuitry that won't allow the module to return home. Galactus nears as Sue finally fixes the machine, and he blasts the module with Dark Matter - but the Dark Matter hits the Quantum Gate and there's a reaction and the entire team - the two in the module and the two in the lab - are pelted with some kind of cosmic madness. 12. The scene of the team waking up in the wreckage is similar here with Johnny on fire, screaming, and Ben trapped in stone. Sue's condition is more obvious though, with the skin on her face disappearing and showing her musculature. 13. The script jumps ahead four years instead of one, where Johnny becomes a reality TV star, Sue goes back to medicine and uses her invisibility powers to look inside of patients suffering from serious cancers (Dr. Elder wants her to come work on the Moloid program, but Sue won't - she thinks it'll be weaponized), Reed is in hiding because he blames himself for the destruction caused at the Baxter Building where he has built a Herbie robot while trying to sell the FantastiCar to Toyota, and Ben is working for the military. 14. Meanwhile, Lavteria creates their own Quantum Gate thanks to the information that Victor sent them. They sends a team through. Only Doom returns, however, and takes over the country with his powers, now acting as Galactus' herald. 15. Sue has been trying to cure Ben, using her cancer research, but it isn't working. 16. Victor's people, called Shock Troopers who are armed with futuristic weapons, attack Reed in Indonesia. When he notices that the weapons are based on his designs, Reed realizes that this has to be Victor's work and that he's still alive. After failing to contact Sue, he uses a FantastiCar and flies to the Baxter Building, bringing Herbie along as well. At the same time, Shock Troopers attack Sue and Johnny at the Baxter Building. During the fight, Dr. Elder is accidentally transformed into the Mole Man. 17. While Johnny and Sue fight the soldiers, a Moloid comes into contact with dark matter and becomes a giant creature. When Reed finally arrives, the giant creature bursts out of the ground. Ben, who happens to be nearby looking at puppies in a pet shop window, hears the commotion and runs over. The team engage the giant Moloid and the battle ends when Ben gets swallowed and tries to fight his way out; when he finally gets to the Moloids mouth he sees that Reed has slingshotted a bus at the creature and Johnny has set it on fire and it is heading right towards the mouth - and Ben. 18. The rest of the script has the team coming together to go to Latveria, now the center of an international incident because Victor has built a giant Dark Energy cannon. He intends to use it to destroy Galactus; it seems that Victor's only chance at survival in the Negative Zone was to act as Galactus' herald and help him find a new world to eat - Earth. But Von Doom intends to destroy the Destroyer before that can happen. 19. The team uses their powers in more ways in the script, and Sue especially gets a lot to do. She helps Reed escape from government captivity after the Moloid battle and she's able to create a force shield that reduces wind resistance on the FantastiCar and allows it to reach incredible speeds. Reed uses his powers to become a living airbag in a crash, he survives a grenade attack, and in the end his biggest contribution to the final fight is Herbie. 20. The final battle is in Latveria, but it is revealed the shapeshifting Doom there is a Doombot; Victor is actually physically attached to the planet in the Negative Zone and has sent tendrils of his being to Earth. The film ends with him trapped in the Negative Zone, the Fantastic Four telling the government Galactus is coming and the retooling of the Baxter Building as their home base and a school for smart kids who can help defeat the coming menace of Galactus. This version of the script was rejected by 20th Century Fox, as it would have been too expensive, which is why they hired Simon Kinberg to rewrite the film, resulting in the final version.

Ok, If we're gonna try to do the Fantastic Four again, here are some of the things I would like to see if yet another Fantastic Four Reboot comes about. - Have it set in the 1960s. Whether or not the Fantastic Four will be in the MCU or not, I still think it would be interesting to see such a movie take place in the time period where the Fantastic Four came from, the Early 1960s. This would allow the movie team to effectively retell the stories of those first Fantastic Four stories, updated somewhat with modern writing techniques while portraying the characters closer to their original incarnations. This would also be a good way for the MCU to sneak the Fantastic Four and explain away their absence all this time in the MCU. - Embrace the silliness, Don't Reject it. This goes along with being set during the 1960s, given how at the time, comic books were a lot less dark and a lot more light hearted and silly (this was the silver age after all). On the surface, this lets us have all the silly stuff from the Fantastic Four's past, like the Fantasticar and whatnot. On another level though, we could show that the 1960's was a very different time for Superheroes and Supervillains, we could get away with being Lighter and Sillier, because at this time, the Superhero scene WAS Lighter and Sillier In-universe. This was a time where Big bombastic theatrics were intricately tied with the 60's Hero scene. We could use this look into the past to establish a unique identity for the Fantastic Four, something people will remember. On top of that, we could use this setting as a chance to poke fun at the cliches and tropes of the time period, perhaps even satirizing it a little bit given the issues people faced back then. - Make it character focused, and focus on writing good characters. If its anything that is going to make or break the fantastic four, its going to be the characters. Because even if you give this hypothetical movie the most insane or basic plot there is, you can still have enjoyable and likable characters bantering with each other to make up for that. Its said that the Fantastic Four are a family in the best of ways, and the worst of ways, always there for each other and having each others back, but also butting heads with each other and getting in each others way. They themselves are both their greatest strength and greatest weakness. - If ya gotta have Doom, have the audience be patient for him, and save him for the end. If the Fantastic Four ever became a trilogy, Doom would be the final Boss. Don't waste him like 3 movies already did. Instead, have the villain of the first movie be someone like the Mole Man or some other Fantastic Four Villain besides Doom. Because Doom should of all things, be the Chessmaster, the man pulling the strings veiled the shadows. From his Castle in Latveria he manipulates events to his favor, always a few steps ahead of the heroes of the Era. Oh sure, he may send a Doombot so we THINK we're facing Doom himself, but that's just a ruse, just as Doom is toying with our heroes, he is toying with us as well, the audience. Always baiting and misdirecting, right under the surface of the self-contained plot of the first two movies, Doom toils away, making his calculated moves one by one, that is, until the Fantastic Four catch up with him by the climax of the Third movie, and we get to see as our heroes have to put their heads and powers together for the greatest test they shall ever face, against Doom in a grueling, bare-knuckle final fight. But, that is just my ideas, what are yours? P.S. For a bit of extra Doom authenticity, bring on a genuine Eastern European Actor with a deliciously sinister voice to Play Dr. Doom.

Whats weird about all the Fantastic 4 movies is, theyre still not getting the Story Right, in ANY way. For one: Dr.Doom is the same Tier Villain as Joker and Magneto. Not a Sub-par Rookie like what they made him to be.

Wow. Rob just won me over. What he talks about at around 15:30 is the same reason gender swaps (like Ghostbusters) bother me. Don't do it just for the sake of doing it. You gotta show me why it's plot-relevant to make this change from the source material. ...Female Tommy in the Power Rangers sequel... Gtfo with that.

cherubas Why shouldn't they change details of a fictional world? In the end, the version you like best will still be there.

  • @cherubas

They shouldn't unnecessarily change the details of a fictional world because it alienates the fans of the name they're attempting to cash in on, which is not a wise decision. Take a look at The Last Airbender or Dragonball Evolution or even the Super Mario Bros movie for example. There are certain things that made the source content loved by many but weren't present in these movies, thus they look like a poor attempt to cash in on a name (the Ghostbusters reboot being a good example of this). I have no problem with changes that serve a plot purpose, as I'm sure you understood if you read my comment. I'm referring specifically to changes that are clearly just for attention, like if they made a Superman movie where Superman was transgender and that had no effect on the plot. For superfluous changes like that they should just be making new properties and new characters instead of trying to shove a political agenda into a work that's connected to its source in name only.

What are your thoughts on "Teen Titans Go!"? I can assume you guys are not familiar with the original series, but what do you think of it as a goofy superhero cartoon? Personally I think it sucks anyway you slice it.
