Nose Series Ep.1: Deviated Septum - Face the Facts with Dr. Lexie Wang | West End Plastic Surgery

We are excited to announce the first episode of our nose miniseries, where Dr. Lexie Wang, our facial plastic surgeon, discusses various nose-related topics and issues in the plastic surgery field. Today's episode is all about deviated septums.
A deviated septum refers to a condition in which the thin wall (nasal septum) that separates the two nasal passages is displaced or deviated to one side. The nasal septum ideally should be centrally aligned, dividing the nasal cavity into two equal halves. Deviated septums can be caused by a variety of factors, and often the condition is a result of a combination of these factors. Some common causes include:
---Genetics: A deviated septum can be inherited, meaning it may run in families. If one or both parents have a deviated septum, there is an increased likelihood that their children may also develop the condition.
---Trauma or injury: Physical trauma to the nose, such as a blow to the face, can cause the nasal septum to become displaced. This is a common cause of deviated septums, and injuries can occur during accidents, sports activities, or other incidents.
---Developmental factors: Some individuals may be born with a deviated septum due to developmental issues during fetal growth. In such cases, the deviation is present from birth.
---Aging: The nasal septum can naturally change shape and structure over time. Aging may contribute to a deviated septum, especially if there are pre-existing conditions or previous injuries.
---Soft tissue changes: Changes in the nasal tissues, such as swelling or inflammation due to allergies or chronic sinusitis, can also contribute to a deviated septum. These conditions may cause the nasal septum to shift, worsening the deviation.
