Okay, you said alot about the characteristics: lots of head bumps, affectionate, but are they black and white? I looked up breeds a few years ago to figure out what my cat was. It seemed to be a Norwegian Forest cat according to the chart. But after seeing this, I'm not so sure now. He has white on his belly and nose, and black on top. The tail is not as fluffy as described. He is long hair. I don't think he is a Tuxedo kitty. The pics I've seen show short-hair as tux kitties. So I'm still watching to figure out if he is a NF-cat. Finally, he nag's (meows) at me all the time. I think he always wants attention which is a big characteristic of him.

He was criticaly sick from his lungs and when I went to the vet they told me he may not see the old ages. My cat is perfectly healthy now after the immune system supporters. Nevertheless I am still worried about. Did your cat had a similar illness? If so how was his condition after 1 years old?

My neighbours have one, in his younger years he was known for hunting rabbits and became like the king of the street, no cat messed with him, and he even put respect into some larger dogs. We think that their cat alone killed most of the rats or mice where we live. I'm still convinced that their cat could kill and drag home a boar if he wanted to, but now he's old and they say he's more lazy now.

Is it possible to have a "runt" NFC? I ask because I have 3 cats all different. The youngest one looks very much like a NFC, however she is small. She's actually the smallest of my 3. She was the only kitten in her mother's litter. I never got to see her mother or father so I've been on a search to find out what she is!! She has the face structure of a NFC, the long fur, furry ears. She truly looks different than any other cat I've ever had throughout my life. The only 2 things that makes me think she may not be a NFC is she is small & very, VERY vocal. She is 4 years old now but still the size of an older kitten. I am baffled. Any help would be appreciated!!

@@kellyupdyke8141 I think probably so, being small it may be a runt fluke (fluke being tiny rather than just smaller) or some other breed is lurking in her genes to make her so. My MC has some other breed in him too but he has more of MC gene taking over and MCs and NFCs are very similar. Mine is a yapper..especially when he wants to play longer than I want to give. Usually if I play chase with him for about 5 mins then shower him w hugs & kisses that usually quiets him down. Or I get the fur comb & comb him. There's all kinds if books on breeds of cats you can read up on.

No matter what she is, I love her, I'm just always curious as to what breed she is!!

@@Saber23I'm not trying to be rude, but what exactly was legal about that situation? In what universe can I allow my uncontrolled hunting dogs to trespass on private property to kill a non-target/non-game animal? That hunter at a minimum needs to pay for the cat, pay compensation for inconvenience, and be banned from hunting with dogs for five years. In my state you're allowed to own pretty much any animal you want, but whatever that animal does to anything is treated in a legal sense as if you did it. Bit a kid? You bit that kid. Killed a cat? No, you did that. Mauls the mailman? Wrong, you dove out of the bush and ripped him open. And if your dog gets shot while destroying property (like killing pets) there's not even a citation for it. That's a "good shoot" as far as The State is concerned. Am I missing something absolutely basic about this case here? This sounds blatantly outrageous to me and wouldn't be tolerated at all literally anywhere I've lived.

This video confirms a lot about the two (cross-breed) Wegies we had. Both adorable, both adoring - neither wanting to sit on laps, but both loving cuddles; both great hunters (of other people's bins mostly, but brought in frogs too); both highly intelligent and neither interested in play once they found out how the pompom on the string worked - I kid you not. She started following and then I watched her eyes travel up the string, back along the stick to my hand, and she gave me such a look of disdain and then walked away! They fought with each other, but never attacked us, even though my daughter (when she came along) used to corner them under the dining room table (they were scared of her - but never scratched her). Toffee (the toffee-coloured boy) liked to sleep across the back of my armchair, purring in one ear, his long furry tail swishing across the side of my face, and Sweetie (his sister) slept along my side in the armchair, with my right arm half wrapped round her, her front paws loosely held my my right hand). Also, tragically we lost our darling boy at 12 and his sister at 15 from cascade organ failure (yes, her kidneys). That was 2007, and we've spent the last 13 years mourning them both and wondering where we're going to find Wegies to replace them.

Be aware of High Blood Pressure in cats everyone! So easy to control at vet's. *It's the real killer!* It's the often cause to Kidney malfunctions, Bad sight, Hearing, Teeth and mouth problems and a lot of other "normal" cat problems. And we are talking about Really high BP, twice what a human can have! Hadn't heard of this until about 20 years ago and now my cats getting over 20y everyone without problems, when they need medicine (Amlodipin) in very small doses sprinkled on their own feed. 0.65 mg daily for a 4 kg cat. And have continual BP checks twice a year.

Sitting here in Sweden (in vikings old capital city) with a neutered male "Skogis" beside me. He moved in to my farm this winter from a "next door" horse stable where he lived before all his life as "free roaming", so he has been at me before on visit. He is only 21 years now! Healthy in all with good teeth and fur. Have a little to low weight, a little bit high blood pressure, a little weak kidneys, hearing not so good so he is very loud and have bad near memory. That's just like me (except the weight) in my age, so we take the same medicins! ;D Nearby vet's adore him and have give me an offer to use him for education on new personell and have free care instead. Always so cool in every situation! He love my other cats (which some are far relatives to him). But if the young brats say something bad to him he chases them with extreme speed for his age up in nearest oak tree, there the small ones only can get away on the thin branches. Really must check out everything happening and are mostly outside if he can decide himself (I have catdoors everywhere). He is a very dominant patriarch over every animal incl dogs, steers, horses, foxes, "my" female badger and me. We all agrees to this because he can stare us in order! Never ever uses his claws or teeths against anyone. Loves going in car and explore or take walkabouts with me or other animals. Still a good hunter for big birds, rodents and snakes witch he of course give to me indoors. But a lot demanding about food and time for me to cuddle and groom him. But he is worth it at his age dear Lurvas / "Curly"! Ps. I think he shed about 100 000 underpelt hairs a day just now! Haha! Have you ever seen YT channel "honeysada" and his female cat Nanny so have you a good picture of how Lurvas look like (but bigger) and have same mentality. And they booth love warm weather also! Pure Norwegian Forest Cats are really the best!!!

My norwegian forest cat ; Arrived to his new home, the size of an apple. A miniature tiger. With a temper to match.... Used all the living room furniture as climbing tools. Finally reached the top of the book shelves.... From where he spied his kingdom, like a mountain lion. Frequently used the curtains as climbing ladders. Kicked away all the flower pots he didn't like the looks of. From the window sills. Skydived (withou shute), from the second floor balcony on day four. Landing head first in a pile of snow. (Sulked for hours, at the insult of being retrieved.) Chose my room for his own. Including my bed. Must have reached puberty at 3 months, as he started humping my teddy bear, while shredding it. Picked a fight with every tom cat in the neighbourhood. Had a vet record of stitches after said fights. At 6 months. Spooked the living daylights out of the dogs on our street. Including a crazy chihuahua, a beagle, a collie, a mongrel terrier, and two german sheperds.... There's never a dull moment with a forest cat in da housssse ! 🐱😉 Love from Norway 💖🇳🇴

We have a Black and white Norwegian Forest cat (which makes him look like a Puma) and he Truly is special. When he was still young, there would occasionaly be a confrontation with other cats in our yard, but as he grew taller and stronger (than other normal cats) he completely dominated his territory. While other cats hunt mice, our he occasionaly comes home with rabbits, birds and large rats. He broke his tail, leg and chin and every time the doctor said he would'nt recover, he somehow still did and amazed everyone. Despite all this he does indeed love everyone unconditionally and loves affection. They truly are a special breed.

I have a Norwegian Forest cat - she is beautiful and sweet. She is by far the most quiet, gentle kitty I have ever had. I would caution anyone who wants to care for one: they need to be groomed a LOT. Once or twice a week is not enough - especially in molting/shedding seasons. Daily grooming is necessary to avoid matting. Her paws are enormous and her claws grow into strong, wicked hooks. Regular claw trimming is necessary.

I can walk around with him in hours on my shoulder, or having him in my lap. He decide when we are going to bed. We sleep together. When he was hurt we went to the wet. I've had my NFC for 10 years now, he's not exactly as outgoing as this video implies though. He's nice to just about everyone but for the most part he only wants me. Anytime I sit down he wants to sit on my lap with me. He waits at the door for me when I get home from work, and when I go to bed he sleeps on my chest under the blankets. While under the blanket he tends to kind of dig his claws into my arm (not deep) but enough to where you can feel it, and also likes to bite my arm (not hard) but does this at least 3 or 4 times before he settles down and goes to sleep. He's done this ever since he was a kitten so I've grown used to it, my wife on the other hand doesn't like to lay with him because of this.

A Norwegian forest cat can have any colour. Most forest cats can. I have three, one is black and white with smoke down her sides, the other one is blue tabby and the third one is white. The best way to see if your cat has Norwegian in it is to see if it's profile matches. The profile of a Norwegian forest cat is very distinct. It is completely straight. The hind legs are also longer than the front legs and if you try to shower them it is almost completely impossible to get them drenched.

We consider ourselves lucky though, mostly because we only had to pay between $80-$100 for him. Better yet was it turns out he was with one of the employees at the cat cafe we adopted him from since a kitten. He had just turned 4 when we adopted him. He’s incredibly anxious though. They do love the family but they definitely bond to their favorite human which was me. I feel absolutely blessed and lucky to have been chosen by this wonderful cat. She would sit on my bed at the front window and look out with those beautiful green eyes waiting for me to get home from work. Then, my entire evening was dedicated to her whether it would be brushing her, grooming her, petting her or just hanging together on the couch, she was by my side all night with purrs so loud!! As you can tell, I talk in past tense as I recently lost her to cancer. This beautiful cat was my 🌎. If you get one...prepare to have your heart stolen as they will and worth it!!

I am a retired nurse and was given a patient's cat as he had always loved my visits and she was no longer able to care for him. I was told he was a 5 year old Main Coon because he was 23 pounds when he came to live with me, Huge, beautiful, bushy black and white male named TJ. But I began to notice slight descrepiencies, different from Main Coons and did not believe that was what he was. I got on the internet and looked up large breed cats. The very first one i saw was an exact video of TJ walking in the snow and said it was a Noreign Forest Cat. I have never heard of them! So i started reading and found they are the oldest known domestic cat breeds found in Europe and Scandanavia. They came to New England on the ships with the Vikings. And I know that the Vikings coming to North America is just a theory but they got here some how. That was 1000 years ago!! The theory is that the Main Coons are descendents of these Noreign Forest Cats! They were admitted into the American Cat Breeders Club in 1938. So after finding all this information I went to TJ's vet because he is the original person who said TJ was Main Coon. I had their receptionest get online to the site I had looked at and showed them the video of the one that looked exactly like TJ. They had never heard of them either!

I had three and the first one was a fortunate discovery, indeed! He was such a treasured member of our family and his name was Whiskers. He was so big we thought the people we bought him from had mistaken a Maine Coon as a Wegie and sold him to us. But they had all of documentation. He had such a dynamo yet sweet personality and we loved him so. We were living in Switzerland when he passed, so after mourning our sweet boy we did buy two others while living there. What treasures they were. Unfortunately the female had developed a fatal health condition and she passed away at the tender age of 4 almost 5 years. The male we had for many wonderful years. Of course these other two, Pooh (female) and Peanut (make) were also treasured members of the family. We also had gotten a rescue kitten when the two Wegies were kittens, yet themselves. They had quite a good time playing and jockeying for who as the Alpha kitten. It was never decided upon, I don’t think. If you adore cats and have the opportunity to get one, my advice is to do it! You’ll not regret it for a minute.

This is the best video I've seen on the Wegie. I saw a few specimens, in the video, that were Maine Coon and Turkish Angora, in looks, but for the most part there were some lovely representatives of the breed. As more people do DNA testing, of their cats, the origin(s) of the Wegie should become clearer. My best guess is the Vikings brought the Turkish Angoras and Siberians back to Norway and those cats interbred with the Roman short-haired cats (RSHC), however, when I was breeding Wegies, for my Ph.D. research, I occasionally got cats that had the looks and temperaments of the Pallas cats. These seeming "throwbacks" never tamed and had to be culled but they were all magnificent specimens that usually weighed around 17-20 pounds when mature. There was no DNA research, on Pallas cats, at the time, so this is sheer speculation that the Pallas cat might be behind the Siberians which then bred with the Angoras and RSHCs, in Norway, over a thousand years ago. If Wegies are bred right, they should produce a coat that resists pollutants other cats pick up on their coats that causes a lot of allergic reactions such as dust mites, pollen, dust from kitty litter, etc. And early neutering and spaying greatly reduces the sebaceous oils that can be irritating to people with a lot of allergies.

We (my significant other and I) believe have a Norwegian Forest cat mix and I think he's a great cat. The first cat I've ever had (my significant other had him before he and I ever even met). Lucky is the cat's name. He is a rescue cat. He came from a cat colony and when he was about a week old, a Tom cat came and killed his litter mates while his mom was out getting food. He was the only kitten to survive the attack and so my significant other took him in and bottle fed him and raises him. He's a pretty mellow cat and now last week he (significant other) found a kitten at a bus stop. We think the kitten is about 6 weeks old. He didn't attack the kitten. He was just unsure of this new creature in the house now. He's adjusting quite well and they even playfully chase one another. He seems to have figured out this is a baby cat and is of no real threat to him and that he still has the run of the house. He tells the kitten in his own way when he's had enough of play time. Kitten seems to understand when Lucky is not in a playful mood. He hasn't been aggressive towards the kitten though but he has been great at teaching the kitten boundaries. We named the kitten Chance. We believe Chance is a domestic shorthair. He's a beautiful black kitten and his eyes are turning green.

Somewhere in this video is a picture of a yellow plastic feeding bowl. Do not feed cats in plastic bowls. The bowls retain oils and can cause a skin infection called feline acne. Use steel bowls instead. thanks for the info on this lovely breed of cat.

I had a half wild cat (by accident, didn't know this when we picked him up) from 2000 to 2019, he looked like a regular old European shorthair, but he was the size of a Maine Coon. He was my first cat, I was around 11 when my parents got him for me, so it kind of warped my idea of how big cats are supposed to be. So now that I'm getting settled in my new house, I'm getting two NFCs from a breeder nearby, because they give me good vibes and I love their cats, plus they're beautiful cats that have some heft to them, like I'm used to.

I believe my cat is at least part Norwegian forest cat, his face looks just like them and tail as well. I got him from a humane society. He has the funniest personality out of any cat I've had

The most wonderful breed there is, both majestic in look and fantastic in character. Have breed them over 25 years and never met a rude or non social nfo ever. Even the full tomcats are sweet and loving. And one of the healthiest breeds there is, but also it gets harder to find nice lines that are not overly used in the breed or inbred. I would avoid the show lines, they are usually not as healthy as the non inbred lines.

I'd wanted one for years and got the opportunity to rescue a pair of registered wegies a few years ago (original owner passed away), best cats we've ever had. My two are from one of the most well known show lines in the US, but the line has very little inbreeding (they are from the same line as Aharon, but my male is 1 generation older than Aharon, and my female is the same generation as Aharon). I think a female wegie in winter coat may be the softest cat there is, I've never seen a kitty as soft as my wegie girl when she's in her winter coat.

My experience is that the US lines are slightly more inbreed, just because it is harder to import fresh lines and have a smaller genepool in average. But even in the European breed wegies, the showlines are about 90% the same lines. Not saying the showlines are all bad but breeders must watch out not to use those same lines again and again. Some males are real matador-males (overused). I would prefer to go to an old breeder that uses an offspring of a male that is hardly used. And the genepool in Europe is also slightly larger, more fresh lines. But that said, a lot of show-horny breeders do stick to those same lines and has come so far that even in Holland I cannot find more than a handful breeders I would dare to buy a kitten, as most are having those same lines all over. Some cats that did wonderful on shows do have more risk and it has come to the point that it is a needle in a haystack to find a male for my girl that does not have a risky (grand)parent. I find breeding getting more and more scary :(

Our Chester has better manners than any human I’ve ever met, and he’s a 13-ish year old unaltered male. I’ve never had him mark anything in our apartment, except my youngest son’s hockey bag (his favorite person). We took him in 2 years ago when his original owners just left without him when they moved (def NOT a cat to come when you call; he comes when he decides). At least he’ll enjoy his retirement years in comfort and lots of love!

My Ouija found me on my back porch. He had gotten soaked somehow and was unable to shed the excess water. Freezing and starving and blind, we let him join our clowder. He is now half again as big as my male tabby.. he is no longer blind but shares food humbly like he was a kitten.

We adopted our cat when he was 8 weeks old and was told he was a Maine coon, but, being in the animal health industry, I lean more towards him being a Norwegian forest cat. His profile fits the physical and the personality traits to a T. He is the best cat I’ve even owned, and even wins over people who say they don’t like cats. He is a great mouser and actually caught a flying squirrel once, and I didn’t even know we had them in Alaska! We have quite a few acres and he prefers to spend lots of time outside; unless it starts getting below zero. He is 10yo now and still acts like a kitten often, will run around outside with us with (and similarly to) the dog doing barn chores, and then will come in and lay with while I have coffee. We joke that he can duplicate at night because we will ALL claim he slept with us at night. We have decided he makes his rounds and makes a point to snuggle each one of us in different and specific ways adapting to the person he is snuggling at the moment. He lays on or in between my legs like a cot, at the top of my now grown son’s head, across my now grown daughter’s neck while kneading her, and deliberately walks over my husband to get to me even though it’s a longer route. When my two older sons who now have families of their own will come visit, he will still interact and snuggle them in their special ways just like he did when they were growing up. Sometimes he will wake my husband up and then when he gets up, the cat will lay in his spot next to me with his front paws on me. He even “pets” my arm with his tail often when he’s sitting next to me. He will meet house guests at their car or at the door just like our dog. If all NFC’s are like this, I would recommend this breed to people who like to interact with their cats often and want their cat to interact with house guests.
