Had to google quite a bit to figure out the norwegian elkhound is actually what we call Gråhund in sweden (grey dog). Very common here and very often (almost always) still used for hunting moose (dont get me started on the moose/elk vocabulary 😂). On average, they are extremely poorly trained dogs at least around where i live. Usually just kept in kennels, off leash during hunting and thats about it . Hunting moose is a huge thing in Scandinavia in all a lot parts - it has a very important social and recreational role. Which of course means that gråhund and similar breeds have a very important role. Even though i hunt moose ive never had my own dog (too busy with the polar breeds) but there should be loads of youtube clips of hunting. Its not uncommon to attach cameras to their gps collars when filming hunts, u get a pretty good idea about how they work!

Jag är också ifrån sverige och jagar mycket och har ett lite annat perspeltiv. I would not agree that most Gråhundar are poorly trained just that they are trained for different things. A Gråhund or Jämthund needs an absurd amount of hunting and hunting training to do it's job well. A lot of the time that would with a pet dog be put on more traditional training will as such be used for teaching it it's job and keeping it good at it. And the most important thing for that kind of dog is that it can hunt well for hours without human contact if needed and as such pepole both prioritize differentley and "good dog training" can make the dog a worse hunting dog as it starts looking more to you for what to do.

My Miko (the Mittelspitz, aka medium German Spitz) loved this clip. He was riveted watching the two dogs navigate the brush especially when you whistled for them. He's very much a cross between these two breeds in his behavior though. Like the Elkhound he is much more responsive than the Catahoula but has his nose pinned to the ground almost constantly. He is very self confident however, and ventures a bit too far from me. I've tried to reaffirm his max distance using a longline but he is proving a challenge. Also using the line to reinforce his obedience when far away as he can get distracted. I've trained him (or tried to suppress his instincts) to not go for small game, and to not follow or chase deer seeing how there is a LOT of deer, rabbits and elk right outside my yard (sometimes in it) and here it's illegal for him to harm or even distress them. He's gotten to the point of letting squirrels pass 3ft in front of us on the path now without flinching but off leach I still don't trust him. (He's 19lbs and has 7" fur so looks a lot bigger than he is.) Is this session done in an enclosed woodland or can you expect to meet other dogs by the way?

Love our elkies ❤ We do most adventures off lead. They do venture far, but excellent recall. And so funny you mentioning how springy they are 😂 We call them "fox" jumps and they fox jump all the time. One other trait is that they like to climb up high on boulders and fallen trees, even picnic tables to scope up high. Thanks for this video. Was fun to see how common breed traits come through.

My Siberian huskies do the same. There are two different springy behaviors they do: One is the "fox jump" when they pounce on little critters in dense vegetation or in snow. The other is when the start leaping like a deer at a full run. That seems to be a non-verbal (i.e., silent) signal to the other dogs that the hunt is on.
