Norton model 50 will it start?

Instead of getting on with the jobs and projects I already have, I thought it best to buy another.

You've got an Excellent Classic Motorcycle. And in Pretty Good Shape, of course you will need some work no doubt. It will definitely look better when it has the Proper Chromium panels on the fuel tank. Nice feature, Cheers

Thank you. Due to budget constraints pretty may be some time away. I'll improve things as I go along. Aiming for usable and reliable.

The only thing better than discovering all the previous owners "improvements" is finding out the are electrically related. Cheers from the shed

The only electrical thing to worry about on this one is the big lucas switch on the headlight bowl. It feels a bit sloppy and the reproduction ones aren't the best.

@@ginner43 . Ignore it and fix up an alternative cheap switch somewhere . That way you have a working solution and you p*ss off the rivet counters .

Any day you pick up a fresh bike is a good day . I had a layshaft try to escape from one of those gearboxes , it was on an Atlas , so a bit more powerful engine , but you might want to check the bearing and replace it with a " superblend " bearing ( stupid name for a bearing ). But then I'm paranoid when it comes to bearings and like to replace them all , everwhere . I'm also paranoid about bears .

Bears and bearings. They have a lot in common, both can cost you an arm and a leg.

Not PC today but the full name of the bearing is FAG Superblend. The rollers are barrel shaped so that the bearing can tip without digging into the land. Very good for Commando mains, bearing in mind how flexible the cranks and cases are on those motors (especially the "Combat" engine).

Those motorcycles were serious transportation in the old days. Gas was rationed for 10 years after WW2. British motorcycles were reliable and dependable transportation. They earned their keep by taking their owners where they wanted to go. Simple and long lasting. Still useable today for their intended purposes. I have had my Triumph Tr-6 with a hard tail and magneto for 40 years. I commuted for 25 years on that bike. I was known as a Triumph guy. People couldn't believe that I bought a Sportster. I have had my Sportster for 25 years. Everyday transportation as l don't have a 🚗.
