If you can put someone back to sleep, but just not in the 1 broken pod then the dilemma is so easily solvable. The trip is 120 years long and there are 5,000 passengers. They can all take turns being awake for 9 days with one person, who they put back into hypersleep right after waking up another person. Then after another 9 days the person they woke up puts them back into hypersleep to wakeup when the spaceship arrives. This works as long as there is at least a 240 years supply for 1 person of accessible food. It could be done with only 120 years worth of food if everyone's alone for 9 days before swapping with the next person.

I haven't watched that movie in a good bit so I don't remember if there was more problems with putting people back to sleep other than the broken pod, maybe it wasn't fully explained. He definitely acted like he couldn't wake everyone up even though all the other pods should have allowed for them to wake and be put back in stasis. If its possible to put everyone back to sleep, I'd probably wake everybody up, or wake up the engineers to fix the pod and we could have a discussion on how to fix it. I did read another comment saying the crew is locked in another area he couldn't access, which is definitely a big problem so your idea probably makes the most sense. Yeah, big inconvenience for everyone for a week but I don't want to die alone on an empty space ship lol.

K8's explanation is perfectly reasonable. Also, Ryan's families bathroom/expedition policy is extremely sound.

I feel like a lot of this hinges on the idea it's somehow better to wake up your kid in a situation where you're the only people left in the universe versus in a community of people. Also pretty much nobody goes all the way to the end of their life without meeting new loved ones; your parents dying is sad but that doesn't mean you die alone.

Kate makes some pretty interesting ethical points about dying alone. Could've been a better angle for the movie if somebody still dies first and it creates a vicious cycle of every passenger waking each other one by one in descending order of hotness.

If the premise is that everyone is in hypersleep so they can survive the length of the journey... then how is Ryan supposed to wake Kate up when she and Luna are the same age? The whole point is that they don't age.

Huh? Both Ryan and Luna are awake in the hypothetical. Not in hypersleep. Ryan raises Luna, while K8 remains in hypersleep not aging. Once Luna is K8's age, they wake K8 up.
