Northern Tool 164782 Vs. Harbor Freight 61705 welding cabinet cart assembly and comparison
Комедия
Assembly and comparison of the Harbor Freight 61705 and Northern Tool 164782 welding cabinets. I am using one for my Millermatic 211, and another for the plasma cutter.

Thank you for the instructions on how to assemble these carts and for the comparison of both. I went for the Harbor Freight because it had a better price. Good video, thanks a bunch.👍👍

I'm glad it was helpful! Soo long ago! Does Northern still still sell that cart? HF may call it "Vulcan" now?
Really appreciate the detail in which you took to explain all the little pro's and con's of each unit. May not mean much to most, but I for one REALLY appreciate your efforts. Keeps the funds where I need them most . . .in my un-greedy now educated little paws. Thanks!!
Nice review! Thank you for taking the time and spending the money to do this. You've inspired some ideas on my own welding cart.
I imagine you are already aware this is THE video review for the HF Welding Cabinet. Found it by looking at some welding forum and have to say the information in here is brutally useful! Thanks for putting it together! I regret not taking advantage of the $129 sale. The lowest you see the HF one now is $149 and the coupon won't work. Maybe Black Friday... Good job, man!
If you think about it, you can buy two HF, for the one NT. Which is basically the cost of an HF welder. NT is very tricky, they often omit reviews on their website that are negatives. I shop both of these places, and both have good and poor products, but get preturbed when they edit their consumer's reviews. Thank you for allowing us to decide and the very fair review.
Very nice comparison, I’m glad to see it comes semi assembled, they almost had me sold with one for my newly purchased plazma cutter, but then just thought of the $40 cart my mug, stick, and oxy/accty little bottle set sits on… I don’t use the stick, so will probably just swap spots with the plasma cutter and spend no money. Thanks for slowing me down, I’ll go shut the truck off and won’t go… I’ll just sit here with more $$ in my pocket 😅
Thanks for your thorough review!!....bought the HF love it! Well built!!!
Hands down the best tool review I have ever witnessed.
very nice video and explanation, I really appreciate this kind of videos
Sadly Northern Tool has discontinued their cabinet. I has been replaced with a Klutch cabinet that looks identical to the HF you reviewed. Northern charges $100 more for it. With the deal you got on the HF I would live with the bin instead of a drawer on the bottom. Would probably spring for the better casters and some larger wheels in the back if I could make 'em fit. Great review, you earned your thumbs up and I will check out your channel.

Thank you! Very interesting to hear it's been discontinued.
I must say after getting my HF cabinet and watching the review I’m glad to have gotten the HF. For one the price difference, I like the HF finish better, also the drawer handle system. The bottom compartment fits my helmet just fine and the different desighn brakes the monotony. I was not impressed with the NT unit with the cheap small buttons of which one was broken on yours. The drawers slide very nice on my HF, metal is certainly thick enough and the curve for the bottle holder looks like it will fit my 125Cuft tank circumference nicely. I can’t see any justification for spending more on the Northern Tool Cart. Must say I’m impressed so far and I dont ever buy crap for tools. I cant see how anyone wold not like this cart. I may have to prop my Hobart Handler 190 up slightly if the whip hits the handle or remove one screw from each side of the handle and swing it down about 1/2” and drill and reinsert the sheet screws?Nice video, good job!
Well stated, well reviewed video. Thank you very much. I wanted to know the comparisons between these 2 cabinets.

Thanks! Now I have a local Harbor Freight, I wish Northern Tools shipping was more reasonable, at a time where free shipping seems to the "norm". It looks like they now have a $40/year free shipping deal.
On the HF unit, if I was to replace the screws going into sheet metal, is there enough room behind or inside for the bolt heads or nuts to clear and not cause a problem. Thank you for a really great review.
Excellent video!
Ok I do have some questions for you. My biggest issue with any type of tool chest/cabinet is the drawer sliders. Just from watching this video it looks like the Harbor Freight has better more stable sliders. Am I wrong with that assessment? Also does the Harbor freight have ball barring sliders. When you press down on the drawers do they still easily slide in and out with that pressure applied? It also looked like the divider on the Harbor Freight was made of metal. Is that the case? If so I'll be picking on maybe two of these up in due time. I can't build something like that for the price they're selling these at. Plus if it's build anything like their higher end tool boxes, I'm sold.
Hello, Nice comparison video... That said dealing with the Tank Brackets unless you have an exact same radius tank to match the bracket the ‘“v” bracket will actually be better because there will always be two points of contact with the Tank to the Brackets... Greg
Hello, good review, alot of dimensions.. but what is the sheet metal wall thickness on each cabinet?
I'm afraid I like harbor freights better. Great video!!!
Good review - thanks!
Outstanding video. You covered all the major points and edited out the superfluous assembly portions. I'm not sure if you made my decision easier or harder, but thanks for the great job. Do you think with some new brackets, two bottles would fit on the HF?
Thanks for the info! I'm going to buy one. What is the diameter, size, of the OEM casters it comes with?
Nice job!
After using these for a while, which do you like better? The cost on the hf has gone up and I have a coupon that makes the NT cheaper than the hf.
I honestly like this harbor freight cart. I only get "some" tools from harbor freight and this gets my approval. Their non motorized hand tools are ok, anything motorized I don't buy or keep long.
Great video. Well put together. Thanks for sharing. After having used for some time now, which would you buy if you had to get another one. I have to admit I like the lower drawer on the NT for helmet etc.

I need one of these for my everlast welder. I also like the lower drawer. I need somewhere I can put my helmet.
Harbor freight is for the home shop northern is more industrial and for people that simply have the money sure harbor freight doesnt have the best but it gets the job done for us small shop users
What is the measurement from the back tank platform to the top of the cabinet? Think a 125CF tank be too big for this cabinet?

A 125 tank is plenty happy on this cart.
Nice video. Doesn’t look like either of these could be easily modified to hold Two 125 cf bottles?
I’m going to go against the grain here and say I much prefer the northern tool cart. I will take bolts and inserts over screws and rivets. Plus I have a tool box with the door on bottom and think it’s useless. That being said, I will be buying a ZT Fab kit at some point and likely a us general tool box to mount it on.
Thank you very much for this video. I saw the Harbor Freight one in the new ads and thought hell yeah this would be great for my TIG welder. This video really helps with that decision to buy one or not. What part of NY are you in? I'm up here in Syracuse.

Long Island here. I will check on the sliders, but IIRC they are both ball bearing and slide equally nicely under weight. I did find something when putting the welder on the cart.... the Northern tool does not hold a large diameter bottle (shelf is not quite deep enough), where the Harbor Freight unit does.

Measurements brought to you by the free harbor freight tape measure. hahahaha.

Ha, they were giving them away "Free gift" for a couple years. More recently the free blue flashlight was the most common free coupon. My favorite is the 4-in-1 screwdriver / small moving blanket. Search the net for the coupons.
I don't know why they don't make these things bigger. Holds only one bottle too? Both too small for me. Guess I'll have to make my own.
for the price the Harbor freight is not bad I noticed the rear wheels had steel bearing where as the northern tool has just the plastic wheels I can see trouble with that down the road if you move it around a lot
I bought the Harbor Freight for my 211 also. It's actually not too bad. And I love to bad mouth their stuff.

+Tec 9 HAHA, yes... a Miller compared to HF "anything" are basically opposing forces when it comes to opinion of quality. For the time I put on the welder I could have bought a Chicago Electric 180 for less than 30% the price of the MMatic. I will say, prior to the 211 I had an overkill 212, which I sold years later for very close to the price I bought it for. I like the smaller gun of the 211 (close quarter exhaust work, etc) and don't need the duty cycle of the 212.
Is the metal real flimsy on both carts ?
@Hubjeep
8 жыл бұрын
No, metal thickness is adequate on both. The Northern Tool one is slightly more stout.
I'll take the harbor freight for the money
the v vs the curve, the v would be better as any size tank will fit more securely and the smaller chain gives more options for a tighter tank to cabinet fit. I do agree they are very close and I doubt the northern is worth the extra money.

+dan rasmussen The $60 shipping on the Northern can be avoided by buying the Harbor Freight at a store near you. Not sure what the shipping would be on the HF.
Overall it seems to be a tie. Where one is better the other is just slightly less. Theyre most likely made by the same company just slight differences to make them different.
And the winner is.... Harbor Freight!
$400 now at Harbor Freight.
Overall it seems to be a tie. Wherw
Norther tool has better welds .
Easy choice.....the Harbor Freight gets the win for cost alone.
I would weld some angle steel to the bottom of ether cart .and weld the back plate to the drawer section .

Reinforcement never hurts. I come up with ideas like that all the time (for Jeep, boat, etc), but never end up actually following through with them, instead just use the thing (too many hobbies here), lol.
Did the wife kick you out and the welding carts
Overall it seems to be a tie. wWhat
3:47 The difference in adjustment with the 2 sizes of chain is completely insignificant.
I have the Harbor Freight Mig welder cart the $39 dollar one works just great holds welder and bottle and has a shelf below . don't see the need for one with 4 Drawers ???? @ $100 bucks or more I hang all my clamps on the wall and Mig tips and other small tools fit on the shelf on the cart

+1995dresser In an ongoing attempt to become organized, I wanted to get the accessories, consumables, etc together with the tool they go with, so I don't have to search around for them, or buy more if I can't find them. The Drawers are not necessary, but very nice to keep everything in one spot. For the money, the drawers provide quite a bit of storage.

+Hubjeep I'm probably going to go with the one with the drawers for my everlast welder and accessories. You gotta use a coupon though or you are paying too much!
You shouldn't have been able to use the 25% off coupon on tool boxes or welding carts...almost all of the 25% coupons say this.

I found this out yesterday. Store wouldn't let me use the coupon. So didn't buy the unit.

The quality of the Harbor Freight cart is a joke next to that Northern cart. Just look at how much it flexes when Hubjeep gets up off the floor and pulls up against the cart at 16:34 vs when he does the same thing with the Northern cart at 17:25. The shipping weight of the Northern cart is about 15% more than the HF cart. That probably means the Northern cart is built of thicker gauge sheet metal. The Northern cart is powder coated. That's why the coating is not as "nice and thick" as the coating on the HF cart. It doesn't have to be as thick because it's better material. The "V" shape of the bottle holder makes more sense because it will self center the bottle. The round one will be sloppy unless the radius of the bottle is exactly the same as the radius of the bracket. The sheet metal screws vs nuts and bolts are just laughable. I suspect that the reason the Northern cart has different sizes of fasteners is because some designer or engineer actually put a little thought in to the placement and required sizes of the fasteners.

+vespadano1979 Thanks for the comment and the observations. The appearance of "flexing" the HF cart rocking on the floor was either due to a fold in the moving blanket, or floor tile thickness variation. When on a level surface it doesn’t flex.

I have the harbor freight one. The drawers have a bad tendency to pop open when you don't want them too, and the casters are junk. They have a bad tendency to bind and drag instead rolling and turning. I plan to build an angle iron frame with heavier duty wheels to eliminate this problem and the flexing of the unit when loaded.
I bought my welding cart from Summit Racing for $125plus tax .065 percent much better than the other I found
I'm afraid I like harbor freights better. Great video!!!
