Northern Flicker Woodpecker Mini-Documentary

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Yellow Shafted Northern Flickers are woodpeckers that are not too keen on pecking wood - they spend most of their time pecking the earth! They prefer to dig for ants with their unique curved beak and sticky tongue so they are more commonly spotted pecking on the ground. Like all woodpeckers, Flickers nest in cavities in trees and are also some of the loudest "peckers" in the woodpecker family see these videos for example:

An individual Northern Flicker has joined us in Missouri just a week ago. He was drilling into the metal chimney vent searching for a mate and claiming his territory. The sound was definitely loud enough to have made us leave the unbearable sounds indoors! We have multiple Woodpeckers who stay the winter but I was happy to welcome this fellow. He awkwardly feeds on the insects of our lawn. I am thankful to have stopped our lawn service from using insecticides the last few years. We live along the woods but in a primarily suburban area. We are fortunate to live along a preserved wooded corridor. We are currently going through 8 pounds of seed every day and a half. He is among the first to return after migration. The Flicker stays for hours and is so interesting to watch. I am eagerly awaiting as he is for his mate to arrive. We have many walnut trees that line the previous farm and ancient Orange Osage trees with many sturdy but hollow branches for the Woodpeckers to nest. I have not gotten quite as close as you except when he “beckons” me outdoors. 🤫 I never send him away but pull up a chair to watch his daily activities and listen from outside his drilling to let everyone know he has arrived! Thank you for the video. I look forward to looking for you again.

So we are on Long Island, NY.... My Brother made my Sister and her husband a really nice Screech Owl Box....... But A Northern Flicker Got to it first which is great cause It's my Bro-in-law's favorite bird. We sit on the deck and wait for it to come home in the evening..... Beautiful!!

These birds aren’t common in my neighbourhood but I saw one today and my life will never be the same🤩😂. Seeing the flicker of gold on its wings is a testament to Gods magnificence!. No camera would ever capture the brilliance of the bird. You just have to see it in person. This is my new favourite bird. Thanks for documentary 😃

Beautiful birds, one of my favorites along with the kingfisher, osprey and oriole. The female flicker does not have the black mark below the eye.

I just saw one of these in my front yard in Oregon… but it was red under it’s wings when it flew off and red on the tip of its tail. I’ve never seen one before. We’re out in the country and have always had a lot of fun and interesting birds but this one is a first. Currently we’re in the middle of a bluebird nest building frenzy, they’re all over the place and fly into our windows all day long! It’s definitely a busy bird time around here.

Glad to find this informational video. A family of pileateds cleared out of a new nest cavity about a week ago next to my patio, and suddenly I’ve had all kinds of what I thought was pillie noise back at the cavity. Today I got my binocs on it and there’s a flicker! It’s very noisy, wondering if it’s going to nest there. Haven’t been able to see if it has a mustache or not. I have only had one very occasionally around my suet feeders, and since I’m. Omlonger feeding suet for the season, hadn’t seen it for a while. But interesting you said they like aspens, because that’s the kind of tree this cavity is in. Thanks for the info!

Wow! I didn’t know that Northern Flickers are the most widespread woodpecker species in North America. I thought it was Downy Woodpeckers. Interesting. I also loved the facts that you gave, like 5,000 ants being found in a Northern Flicker’s stomach, their geographic region (it’s amazing that they’re found as far south as Nicaragua and Cuba), and how their salivary glands in their tongues release a sticky substance to trap the ants. Very cool! By the way, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, BB! 🎄🎅🎁🎆🎊🕊

You and me both! The only time I got close to seeing a Northern Flicker is seeing two of them perch on my front doorstep back in early March of this year, and one other time while walking my now-deceased dog in a field behind a playground. They’ve always fascinated me as being unique among the other woodpeckers in its foraging behavior.

About ten years ago, we had what I believed to be a nesting pair that would stop by the old telephone pole near my place and hang out for a few weeks in the spring and in the fall. Not sure where they went for the rest of the year, but it happened for about 5 years. until we moved.
