North Port Florida Hurricane Ian Destruction | 5 Days After Hurricane Ian Landfall

Hurricane Ian made landfall in Southwest Florida as a Category 4 Hurricane with winds over 150 mph. North Port Florida was in the Hurricane Ian's path of destruction and brought strong winds with massive flooding throughout the entire region.
Days after Hurricane Ian, authorities shut down I-75 for about 24 hours due to the flooding that occurred over the highway near Sumter Blvd. As of October 3rd, 2022 Sumter Blvd is closed and people are not allowed to enter the North Port Estate area of North Port due to the high flood waters.

We have always been prepared for hurricane season and try to be prepared if it actually hits our area. Lived here since 1986 and have seen some stuff! Our house is shown in this video, and I was surprised when you said this was day 5 after Ian. The water was still so high! We were forced to get flood insurance a few years ago, and we were definitely not happy about it. We've seen North Port flood before. A flood in the early 1990's came up to our front door, but never higher than that. Brand new roof and hurricane windows were put in our home for wind, but never, never even thought that water would be the thing that got us. I'm thankful that the mortgage company and FEMA made changes and that we have flood insurance. But, unless your home was right on the canal, you weren't forced into the insurance. So many people in our neighborhood are relying on their own savings, and help from generous people. We are at 4 months post Ian and we are still finding flood water inside some of our stuff. And we were quick to get started cleaning up and cleaning out the house. It's been very emotionally taxing. Although we did want to downsize, it's not fun throwing your stuff away instead of choosing what to get rid of. This neighborhood is still very much so on the mend, and we will get it done. Eventually. We're almost to the fun part, getting all the new stuff! But having to make the decisions on what you want to buy to replace what you lost, while you're still finding things that you have to throw away, I don't recommend it. All this being said, my husband and I LOVE North Port and we have zero desire to move away. Far enough away from the Gulf so we're not "touristy" but close enough that if we wanted to, we could spend the day at the beach. But, also, we're Floridians, we don't go to the beach. LOL Thank you for the video. I appreciate you filming and posting it. P.S. Sending love, thoughts and prayers to every single person affected by Ian!

Have seen many videos of areas suffering the worst destruction; this is the first extended video I've seen of large, flooded areas with most homes still standing. Had no idea what those areas looked like now. Thx for posting. Sarasota, here; we were lucky. Minimal damage, just a massive amount of debris now piled at the road. As to flood insurance: though we don't live in a flood zone, we've always carried flood insurance, anyway. We also recently bought a home in the mountains of western N.C. Not at the top of a mountain, but close. Even so, we went with flood insurance for that property, too. The sense of financial security is worth the cost.

Sarasota here, the biggest reason NP flooded was #1 we had daily rain for a good week ahead of Ian , which made the rivers already cresting and ground saturated, then along comes Ian that dumped a nother good 19" + of rain and caused a surge that pushed more water into those water ways. Most can shelter from the high winds but it was water that caused the most distruction. I live near the airport in Sarasota , we saw wind of about 125 mph , our airport even sustained some damage from the high winds, my home is 3/4 of a mile from Sarasota Bay, home was built in 1972 , we had no damage other then our PVC fence in back of yard was blown down and lots of plant debre .We feel very fortunate that not only did we not have any damage to home but Sarasota did not get the surge that FT Myers got. Please don't forget all those poor people in Arcadia that had extreme flooding even worse then NP , the Peace River overflowed along with Myakka river , Arcadia's flooding was so bad , you barely could see the roofs of homes .

No place has a 500 year history of water “Flood hazard areas identified on the Flood Insurance Rate Map are identified as a Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA). SFHA are defined as the area that will be inundated by the flood event having a 1-percent chance of being equaled or exceeded in any given year. The 1-percent annual chance flood is also referred to as the base flood or 100-year flood. SFHAs are labeled as Zone A, Zone AO, Zone AH, Zones A1-A30, Zone AE, Zone A99, Zone AR, Zone AR/AE, Zone AR/AO, Zone AR/A1-A30, Zone AR/A, Zone V, Zone VE, and Zones V1-V30. Moderate flood hazard areas, labeled Zone B or Zone X (shaded) are also shown on the FIRM, and are the areas between the limits of the base flood and the 0.2-percent-annual-chance (or 500-year) flood. The areas of minimal flood hazard, which are the areas outside the SFHA and higher than the elevation of the 0.2-percent-annual-chance flood, are labeled Zone C or Zone X (unshaded)” A “500 year “ floodplain actually has a .2 percent chance of flooding each year. If you can afford flood insurance you should get it even in an area without flooding. Why? It covers your pipes backing up/breaking and water/sewer sludge flowing into your house. I’ve known several people this has happened to over the years. Either get flood insurance or self insure.

In many of these shots you can see that the water is moving, some of it moving very quickly, and that's a good thing. Stagnant water after a major storm is a nightmare. If the water is going somewhere, then it will eventually drop in level. I'm originally from Punta Gorda, no one seems to be going there so I don't know what's going on. But my brother emailed to say that the power is finally back on.

I live on mongite, house 4498 for 14 years so far. During the storm, i watched dem waters flood under my doors and actually break my window like a dam flood gate, water wind'n shit just rishing right through! The water came straight up to our hips, my shed was even sent fly'n three houses down and across the street! It stoped cuz it hit a light pole, hung right up there like a flag and after all the flooding went down, we had to gut our house from all the mold tryna grow everywhere in the drywall, out shit, the insulation, lost our plumb'n our toilets, cabinets, beds, our whole front lawns turned brown from all the shit stuck to the grass! Both cars dam busted from being flooded. And in the way out right after the storm ended we trudged through sraightup waist-deep to neck-neep swamp water, coouldnt see a dam thing, just kept walk'n and hoped we wouldnt steap on noth'n! Truely a sureal experience i never thought i'd live through and ive been down here my whole life! Ive been throug every hurricane 'n nado to hit this place, hell it took 'boutta week ago just to get the dam wifi back as well. Crazy shit i'll tell ya. All ya'll better take care out there! The problem is these storms are unpredictable. If we had gotten the storm surge they got in Ft Myers then it would be a totally different outcome for NP. One thing I have learned from all the hurricanes over the years here is that each storm is different and exactly where it makes landfall, the size, the intensity, etc, decides a lot of the outcome for any specific area. There really is no way to know how an area will fare with future storms.

Actually, I-75 runs east to west through North Port then continues north from Venice. So yeah, the Estates are on the North side. I was a bit confused when I moved here 20 years ago. You got your N Biscayne and S Biscayne. N Cranberry and S Cranberry, as an example. Then there's Price Blvd, you got W Price and E Price divided by Toledo Blade. If, say, you take Toledo Blade past I-75, which is heading North, and head east on Tropicare, you're in the Estates. Incidentally @Living in Sarasota Florida- Noah Ward, I live on Longbow Ave. I checked the Sarasota Flood Zone map for North Port a day before Ian and was dishearten to find out I lived in a flood zone. When Charley hit, it wasn't considered a flood zone. The neighborhood did receive flooding, but luckily only in the streets. We're right below Bobcat Trail on Toledo. My friend lives off of S Salford and his house did get a foot of water in the house. Total loss.
