35살 한국인입니다. 80~90년대까지는 북한에 가족을 두고 온 분들이 많으셨습니다. 그래서 남한과 북한 정부가 협력해서 가족이 만날 수 있도록하는 이벤트를 열고 그 이벤트를 방송에 내보내기도 했어요. 상상해보세요. 우리 할머니 할아버지가 북에 두고 온 가족을 그리워하며 울고 있는 모습을요. 학교에서도 북한 친구들에게 편지를 쓰는 활동을 했어요. 실제로 전해졌는지 아닌지는 모르겠지만요. 그 당시에도 경제적 이유로 통일에 대한 찬성과 반대는 항상 존재했지만, 찬성이 50% 정도였어요. 통일에 반대하는 사람들도 정서적으로는 이산가족에 대한 미안함을 느꼈습니다. 하지만 시간이 흐르고 이제 그 분들은 대부분 돌아가셨어요. 세계 경제는 점점 어려워지고 남한과 북한의 경제 격차는 더 커졌습니다. 이제 대부분의 젊은 사람들은 통일에 회의적이에요. 같은 말을 쓰는 같은 민족이라고 생각하고, 북한 주민들이 안타깝고, 북한에서 탈북해서 남한으로 건너오신 분들도 당연히 같은 나라 사람이라고 생각하지만, 통일 자체에 대해서는 반대하는 사람이 늘었어요. 개인적으로는 통일은 이루어야하지만 경제적 이유로인해 단계적으로 계획하에 이루어져야한다고 생각해요. 저처럼 생각하는 젊은 사람도 많아졌어요. 이전과 같은 정서적 지지와 통일에 대한 절대적 찬성은 드뭅니다. 저 스스로도 그 점이 슬퍼요😢

Ken, I've travelled to many cities around Korea, and being a fan of your videos for the past 3 years, you have to trust me on this. I'm pretty sure you're already planning to visit Busan (it's amazing and I prefer it to Seoul), but you'll absolutely love GYEONGJU. I know for a fact that you'll love it. im an american but i have german friends and their dad escaped east berlin in 1969 with some of his friends.they came to usa to live. i remember watching that dumb wall come down with my german friends.they were all crying and these are some tough guys. he went back to germany to reunite with his family but most had died.

Ken, I remember the fall of the Berlin Wall very well. At that time, I was fifteen, and I felt like I was witnessing history being made. i was visit dmz in 7th june(it was sunny and no cloudy) and i can see real north korea from Dora with some mountain and some house around that flag,and secondly u dont need book another hotel in nearly dmz because they have tour dmz too in seoul and started in myeongdong

I'm Korean. Many Korean people don't want to unify not that much for now. Actually, many surveys show that. There is a very very wide gap between the two countries, politically, culturally, and economically. So, first of all, Both should close the wide gap little by little.

as a german i can understand why the south dont want a reunification. When Germany reunified it was kind of a big burden for the west, economically speaking.

You are an intrepid traveler. I appreciate how you go off the beaten path or try to avoid tour groups during your travels. I laughed when you booked the hourly hotel - dodgy indeed. Safe travels.

I remember when the Berlin Wall came down, I was 10 years old, my mom let me stay up late to watch the news that night.

I went to DMZ earlier this year, the theme park at the bus stop was for visiting S Koreans who goes there to pray. the younger generations will follow their parents or grandparents, and since they may not be aware of the Korean war, they will play at the theme park

I really like this channel cause you don't just visit the mega cities and popular destinations but smaller and more unknown places + you give us a realistic perspective what it would be like for a foreigner (minus the camera you're holding which probably makes you stick out but it is what it is). I hope to visit Asia one day as well 👍 (been a few times to Japan cause my mum's japanese and I'm addicted, it's too good)

I did the tour group to DMZ starting from Honggik University, the only difference from your trip is that we had to share the bus with other foreigners and had a tour guide. We didn't need to pay for hotel in Geumchon, take the metro or pay for a taxi.

This does seem like a "what not to do" guide so far. Arrive in Korea with no hotel, cash, understanding of t-money cards or knowledge of the language. Speak on trains. Travel to the DMZ by the least efficient means possible, book a hotel that looks pretty rough, etc

but its a tourist spot for both sides.. if youre a tourist in north korea its most likely you will go to the dmz too..

I served ROK Army inside of the DMZ where our Guardpost was about 2.8km away from NK Guardpost. They still communicate each other with bell made of copper so we always hear their bell ring every breakfast time while on duty. meanwhile our guardpost have automatic bidet & PC internet cafe 😅

I also hope that these two countries will unite one day

Really want to visit the DMZ and also the JSA but unfortunately that last one is closed and thats why I am delaying my trip to South Korea. Shame you didnt have a clear view there Ken

There is also a stop to visit a metro train station which was supposed to connect Pyongyang to Seoul within the DMZ if they reunify one day.

Great video Ken. Unification should be paramount but sharing already strained resources might be an issue going forward between the two division since decades have passed.

11:16 There are lots of Korea/USA Military Camp near by. So there a lots of Short time lease hotel..for great time with girl friends and boy(Duties Army)^^.

I was born in Seoul in the 60s. My mother was born in North Korea in the 30s and escaped with her parents and three brothers to the South during the chaos and confusion during the Korean War (1950 to 1953). Her father and youngest brother were killed and did not make it. She has never been to the border, but I think many elderly Koreans you saw at the DMZ might be former escapees who left behind their family, relatives and friends more than 70 years ago. Although I spent only the first six years of my life in South Korea - we emigrated to Canada, my memories of my early years are still vivid. I remember the tension among the adults around me about the Communists and potential war via hushed tones and whispers about who among the neighborhood might be a secret Communist. For what it’s worth from a lapsed Korean, I think South Koreans would in principle like reunification and to be re-united with families in the North (if at all somehow they managed not to lose touch) but practically speaking they know given the iron grip of the dictatorship in the North, it is pretty well impossible. Plus, Koreans are a practical people and know that to support the vast poor in the North would mean a significant drain on resources and standard of living the South worked so hard, sacrificed to achieve. I have subscribed! Going your own way and staying at that strange hotel was pretty gutsy. It is also kind and open-minded of you to point out that your country was also divided and that you share some understanding of the circumstances with South Korea.

i am german and my dad was born in east germany. He escaped to the west just before they wall was build.I am born in 79 and i remember we occasionally went to east germany to visit my dads family. It was always a hassle a the bordercontrol. My mum used to "prank" the bordercontrol by bringing a daily newspaper with her and everytime the newspaper was taken away by the officer. We all knew he would read it first before he threw it away. Also, the Stasi ( the secret state police) was a big thing because you never knew who was in the stasi and who wasnt. You couldnt trust nobody. My dad always suspect my uncle to be a stasi member, because he acted strange sometimes. Under certain circumstances it was allowed to visit the west. i dont know exactly when they were allowed to visit us, mostly on my dads birthday, but not every birthday and never the whole family.. When the wall fell, i remember my dad sitting in front of the TV crying like a baby. i have never seen him cry before. I truly want to visit north korea, i dont know why, maybe because its one of the last "iron curtain" but on the other hand i dont want to support north korea with my money.

Thank you Sir for the video. Very informative. You have a lot of courage to try new things that would be intimidating to others. My mom grew up in Germany during WW2. Her younger brother didn't know what a banana was until an American solder, my dad, gave him one soon after the war ended. I was over there right after the wall came down. Pretty cool seeing the former East Germans exploring the part of Germany that was not accessible to them in the past. (On a side note, I think when you say "dutchy" you are meaning to say "dodgy" which is a British English term for risky or dangerous, or you mean "risqué" which is French for indecent, or perhaps "sketchy" which is an American term for unsafe, dangerous or suspicious. "Dutchy" means difficult to understand.) This is minor critique compared to an overall great video.

I can remember when I first visited what was then West Germany as a 23 year old backpacker from Australia back in 1986. I can remember when I first saw the high-security border between East and West Germany and being totally shocked to see the high barbed wire fences with watchtowers every few hundred meters; your parents are correct explaining what the border was like back in the day when Germany was split. I had the fortune to create strong friendships with the West Germans and to live their experiences whilst I was there. Ironically, there was a bit of ill-feeling towards the East Germans when reunification did occur in 1989. West Germans did all the hard work to create a bountiful society, whilst the East Germans were looked after by their socialist-led government in which the basics were provided to ensure a basic existence for the people (think Mercedes v Trabants). I'm sure your parents can confirm this. No doubt a similar experience may occur, if and when unification does occur between the two Koreas. Looking forward to any responses from the South Koreans on their respective thoughts regarding reunification and in support of your vlog regarding this question. Informative and well presented vlog, Ken and hope to do the same trip myself sometime in the near future.

So the question is whether heading to the DMZ is tantamount to entering a high security zone in a rather tense environment which is the opposite of a leisurely tourist zone. That means you ought to be prepared for all sorts of dis-pleasantries together with a level of discomfort thank you very much and enjoy your afternoon ☺️☺️

Hi Ken. South Korean citizens are not allowed to visit the DMZ. When we went to Seoul, our hotel receptionist explained that she would love to visit but was not allowed. Fascinating! I think the tourists on your coach were from China.

You kept saying when you look over to the North Korea side, you are just looking at someone's houses. If you have done enough homework, you'd know that there's no home or family near the border. Like you said, even back in the time there was East and West Germany, people from the East had been trying to go over to the West side. North Korea is the same situation even today. People need special permission, even special social status, someone who showed strong allegiance to the government and to the party can even go to the border area. So you don't have to feel bad when you look at someone's houses. There is no residential area near the border. There are, however, a lot of fake houses just to make the North Korea look good. These houses may or may not have rooms. They could be just some building with windows, like the props at movie studio.

Would like to visit the DMZ on my next trip to Seoul It's a pretty tense area. Actually, I have ask an Korean gentlemen about the reunification.Most of the older generation would like to see some reunification as that part of the generation that was divided due to the Korean War. The younger generation are not really in favour of it. ( Well ,that what the gentlemen told me about 5 years ago ) .. Ya, at one time in hte late 50s, many South Koreans travel all the way to Germany as migrate workers. Yes, things have change so much over the years. The power of South Korea , K-pop, K-drama, Samsung, Hyundai etc. Still an interesting piece content Anyway Take care out there ,mate. Cheers!
