Thank you for your work you are doing. I've noticed over the years in my area that the blue crab numbers have dropped off sharply. It's nice to see that someone is doing research into them.

Hello am seeking information on how to start a small blue crab farm could you answer some questions I have

Blue crabs are fairly difficult to keep in captivity over extended periods which is why you don't see hard shell aquaculture farms. I'm also not an expert in aquaculture so I'm not sure how helpful I would be but feel free to comment any question you have.

My oyster cages are full of blue crabs at every stage of their life cycle. Would you like to come out and study the floating cages to compare with their typical life cycle habitat?

I’ve heard this from several oyster growers. It would definitely be interesting to study the roll that cages play as a nursery habitat.

When the 1 inch wire peeler pots showed up along with lots of shedding operations the hard crabs started to dissappear go figure

I've heard this from a lot of watermen. I'm currently working with my advisor to see if we can put together a funding proposal to look at the data behind this. I need to wrap up my PhD first and graduate but I would love to look into the relationship between peelers and the hard crab fisheries.

How long for juvenille become mature for mating, and how long after that the eggs will hatch? Anyone know the answer?

  • @erinvoigt3516

It generally takes around 2 years for the juvenile to reach sexual maturity and then a few months between mating and releasing zoea. However after mating the female can produce several clutches (groups of eggs) for a few years.
