Norse Viking Music - Úlfhéðnar

Музыка

A Viking war song about Úlfhéðnar, wolf warriors and Odin's elite fighting forces.
Úlfhéðnar were totemistic combat heroes who were feared for their unique martial skills and their ecstatic fierceness, which they would fuel by performing shapeshifting rituals and weapons dances.
Úlfhéðnar considered wolves as sacred, and their spirituality consisted in incarnating the spirit of the Wolf in order to acquire its power and primal wisdom.
Surviving in the wilderness, fasting, resisting extreme temperatures, living in the manner of the Wolf and learning its ways was part of the Úlfhéðinn shamanic and military initiation.
This song was 100% self-composed with REAPER. Every single vocal sound you can hear was made with my own voice (singing and throat-singing, whisperings, shouts, growls, percussive breaths, etc). I am greatly inspired by Wardruna, one of my favourite band.
Most of the lyrics come from the Haraldskvæði, a 9th century skaldic poem, and from the Völuspá, first poem of the Poetic Edda.
Note: I'm by no means a speaker of the Old Norse language and I know my pronunciation is certainly quite flawed, but please note that I tried to educate myself as best as I could for the song.
I hope you enjoy!

At bersærkja ræiðu vil ec spyrja
Úlfhéðnar hæita,

blóðgar rander bera

Yfir skógar, yfir Miðgarð

"Wolf-coats are they called,
Who bear bloody shields in battle.
They redden their spears when they come to the fight,
And then they act all in a body."
"Now the wolves howl vigorously,
Across the forests, across Midgard"
"Thunder roars!"
"Sons of the Wolf"
"Hail to Odin"

"O Guardian Spirit, honourable Follower"
"Across the forests, the Wolf greatly howls"

For those asking questions about the image, that is a wolf. However that is not just any wolf. He is one of Loki's offspring with the giantess Angrboda, and is called Fenrir or Fenris Wolf. He is the enormous wolf who will defeat Odin, the All-Father, at the final battle known as Ragnarok, and will be killed by Odin's son Vidar. This image is a depiction of Odin bravely facing Fenrir alone. The shitstorm you don't see is the rest of the battle between the gods, giants, and every other being. Thor is busy fighting another of Loki and Angrboda's children, the Midgard Serpent, whose name is Jormungandr. Tyr is fighting the massive wolf-dog Garm, who guards the gates of Hel. It is unknown what happens to Loki's undead daughter, also named Hel, though she did lead the army of unworthy dead (people who did not die bravely in battle, which means they could not go to Valhalla) and Loki's monstrous children into battle. Loki and Heimdall will fight and kill each other at the end. Basically, everyone dies and the life cycle starts over again. There. That's something you know now. Edit: the connection of this story to the picture is incorrect, but this is a good story anyway. No I didn't Google it or copy and paste it, I read books, this is what I believe in. And why are there christians listening to Danheim? Go away, you've already ruined our culture and our ancestors once before. Fuck off our music.

I am not connected in any way to this culture, but it has always fascinated me. This song in particular evokes something very primal in me. As if I can feel the lives of our ancient ancestors who lived freely amid brutal conditions. Like a lone, wild wolf running loose in the wilderness, with the moon gleaming over the icy landscape. You criticize a mother for introducing her child to a way of life that doesn't worship your false god (apologies to those who do worship him) claiming that she is forcing her child into a religion that he is not part of then you "pray" that he grows up to worship "god", in a way pressuring her to stop. Tell me? Is that not hypocritical? If I had children, I would educate them on out background, that of Norse warriors, conquers and that of the many gods they followed, for I am not afraid of what others such as yourself think, that child is a warrior, he will be strong and healthy regardless of the path, religion and lifestyle he chooses. Found this music by accident. However diving so deep into my spiritual side, I was raised christian. Dug into my Cherokee roots to be closer to my great grandmother who was full blooded with blue eyes. Then during meditation met my animal guide, and my spirit guide who I believe is Freya. Dug even deeper, learned her story, she's the mother of cats lol no wonder my animal is a tiger and I have 9 cats. But I'm not disappointed in the slightest. I'm glad I went off the beaten path. Off to seek the paranormal now. Blessed Be everyone. Stay safe. 💙

  • @Fergusius
    @Fergusius5 жыл бұрын

For the gods by Odhinn, for the elves by Dain, By Dvalin, too, for the dwarves, By Asvid for the hateful giants, And some I carved myself: Thund, before man was made, scratched them, Who rose first, fell thereafter Know how to cut them, know how to read them, Know how to stain them, know how to prove them, Know how to evoke them, know how to score them, Know how to send them" know how to send them, Better not to ask than to over-pledge As a gift that demands a gift" Better not to send than to slay too many, The first charm I know is unknown to rulers Or any of human kind; Help it is named, for help it can give In hours of sorrow and anguish. I know a second that the sons of men Must learn who wish to be leeches. I know a third: in the thick of battle, If my need be great enough, It will blunt the edges of enemy swords, Their weapons will make no wounds. I know a fourth: it will free me quickly If foes should bind me fast With strong chains, a chant that makes Fetters spring from the feet, Bonds burst from the hands. I know a fifth: no flying arrow, Aimed to bring harm to men, Flies too fast for my fingers to catch it And hold it in mid-air. I know a sixth: it will save me if a man Cut runes on a sapling' s Roots With intent to harm; it turns the spell; The hater is harmed, not me. If I see the hall Ablaze around my bench mates, Though hot the flames, they shall feel nothing, If I choose to chant the spell. I know an eighth: that all are glad of, Most useful to men: If hate fester in the heart of a warrior, It will soon calm and cure him. I know a ninth: when need I have To shelter my ship on the flood, The wind it calms, the waves it smoothes And puts the sea to sleep, I know a tenth: if troublesome ghosts Ride the rafters aloft, I can work it so they wander astray, Unable to find their forms, Unable to find their homes. I know an eleventh: when I lead to battle Old comrades in-arms, I have only to chant it behind my shield, And unwounded they go to war, Unwounded they come from war, U unscathed wherever they are. I know a twelfth: If a tree bear A man hanged in a halter, I can carve and stain strong runes That will cause the corpse to speak, Reply to whatever I ask. I know a thirteenth if I throw a cup Of water over a warrior, He shall not fall in the fiercest battle, Nor sink beneath the sword, I know a fourteenth, that few know: If I tell a troop of warriors About the high ones, elves and gods, I can name them one by one. (Few can the nit-wit name.) I know a fifteenth, that first Thjodrerir Sang before Delling's doors, Giving power to gods, prowess to elves, Fore-sight to Hroptatyr Odhinn, I know a sixteenth: if I see a girl With whom it would please me to play, I can turn her thoughts, can touch the heart Of any white armed woman. I know a seventeenth: if I sing it, the young Girl will be slow to forsake me. I know an eighteenth that I never tell To maiden or wife of man, A secret I hide from all Except the love who lies in my arms, Or else my own sister. To learn to sing them, Loddfafnir, Will take you a long time, Though helpful they are if you understand them, Useful if you use them, Needful if you need them. The Wise One has spoken words in the hall, Needful for men to know, Unneedful for trolls to know: Hail to the speaker, Hail to the knower, Joy to him who has understood, Delight to those who have listened.

Who is responsible for all this shit!? Our leaders have sold us out. I'm British I voted leave because the EU is a cancer on Europe. I consider myself a brother to the swedes, French ect we need to unite but reject our governments.

@Ezio Auditore da Firenze Germany probably has it worse than the UK. You need to get rid of that witch Merkel. She is more responsible than anyone else. Muslims/diversity are just used as a weapon against us by our politicians. I don't trust any middle Eastern so your right but nothing is going to change until you get rid of your politician. Which is rather unlikely. Try to get out the EU would be a start. All my European brothers I hope one day we can get rid of the EU.

I was writing an epic story taking place some time in about early to high middle ages in a fictive world inspired by lands where today are UK and Norway. About two years ago I got totally lost in dead ends, as the story was getting more and more complicated, and I stopped writing. Now I found this song and after a few hours of listening to it again and again it started to flood me with inspiration and ideas. There is something very special about the song. As if it wanted to start telling you a story, but instead put you an a trance and led you to create and imagine your own stories. Dervhengrym, you possess a great talent and i beg you to create more of this kind of music. Beautiful Viking non-metal music. A rare piece.

Not all of the songs in this soundtrack is Viking songs. Some are German, Slavic, and Anglo-Saxon. But the first 8 tracks are Viking songs! I definitely recommend ’round shielded invaders’ and ’death is nigh’. You should really go check it out!

Just like Roman and Greek gods, often misunderstood to be the same but in reality they're similar but not the same. Evolved differently basically. Similar to Islam, Judaism, and Christianity to give another example. All come from the same root god, but evolved very differently.

Benni Bodin Jagell if you like music like this I will recommend ’Ancestors Legacy's soundtrack: kzread.info/head/PLPfHaI9XqTnEyNJIGL68URic6QhzEbGwC The music is slightly lighter, you know, it's not as dark as this song but it's very atmospheric. Not all of the songs in this soundtrack is Viking songs. Some are German, Slavic, and Anglo-Saxon. But the first 8 tracks are Viking songs! I definitely recommend ’round shielded invaders’ and ’death is nigh’. You should really go check it out!

Been listening to this on loop when I stumbled across it, an absolute masterpiece sir. Been into Wardruna and variants long before Vikings came out, its primal, it speaks to the warrior and it deeply resonates with me personally. Not to bore anyone, but I am Scottish, and also been blessed with Viking blood. I really think my old team mates from active service days would love this track too, it is a song for warriors. Again massive respects to you sir, and heads on spikes for the ones who disliked it:P
