Got to know George Wendt years ago as I went to school with his sister, Marty. George once confided to us that from the time he enters Cheers until he gets to the barstool, he writes the bit, uncredited. This place reminds me of in the 1950’s when I used to tag along with my Father when he went to the neighborhood bar for Beer to bring back home. But he would always get a beer there just to sociable. I however liked to play the shuffleboard bowling machine. If I wasn’t doing that they had a bowl of hard boiled eggs on the bar and you could eat as many as you wanted for free. There always seemed to be Regulars there all the time when we went there. If I went around the room and tried to talk to any of them they would flip me Quarter or whatever they had in their pocket then tell me to beat it.

I’ll be 42 years old in March. During my sophomore year in college, so I guess I was maybe 19, my roommate, who’s still my best friend, invited me down to a small gathering that his brother (who went to the same school) was having with his roommates and some other friends. They were juniors and lived in “upperclassman” housing kind of at the edge of campus. So called rules weren’t really enforced down there. They were pretty much left left alone, which was nice. Anyway we went down there and I was wearing a Cheers t-shirt with a bunch of Norm-isms on the back. They had a bar there and I didn’t know anybody, so that night I basically just sat at the bar and drank beer. The guys there noticed my shirt and also noticed that wasn’t really doing anything besides sitting at the bar drinking, so they started calling me Norm. After that night I became friends with all of them and made other friends through them too, but I was forever known as Norm. Everywhere I went and everybody I knew, referred to me as Norm. I was at a house party the night one of my friends met a girl who he eventually married and had kids with. I spent a lot of time with her in college and she always knew me as Norm, but before they got married she actually called me and asked me what my real name is because she didn’t want to put “Norm” on her wedding invitation. But I still talk to my college buddies all the time and also new people I’ve met too and it’s just like second nature to call me Norm. If any of my old friends started to call me by my real name it would sound really odd to me at this point.

I love this show! One of my favorite openings was a guy coming in to Cheers for the first time in 20 years and talking about how everything has changed. He said they even changed the paneling. Woody says “Where?” And he answered, “Over there, behind Norm!”.

Frazier and Lilith's intelligence was on clear display on Cheers, but I always felt that Norm was smarter than he let on. Excellent with figures, clear understanding of space and color, knew the makings of a good beer, and was quite philosophical as well. Got to know George Wendt years ago as I went to school with his sister, Marty. George once confided to us that from the time he enters Cheers until he gets to the barstool, he writes the bit, uncredited. Watch Danson when he delivers the set-up; he usually has a bottle of water in hand to put to his mouth to hide his laughing at the punch line which is unknown until actual taping.

Wendt was already a master improvisationalist before he was cast in "Cheers."😂📺🍺B.W.
That bit about drinking cold drinks when it's cold outside to even-out your temperature is something I occasionally found myself telling my friends back in school.
