it's like collecting knives or computer parts. it's nice to see what differences there are and look at your collection of nice things you don't have to be rich to have a collection, as long as you're willing to get your hands dirty or scout for deals, part of the fun of having a collection is to say "I have this" to something valuable while saving money

Cool video. I enjoyed seeing and hearing about your CD player collection. The bluetooth feature on the Monodeal is a nice addition. Build quality seems questionable, but that seems to be the case with most, if not all, of the new CD players. I still have a Panasonic Shockwave that I purchased in 2003. A very durable device that still sounds great. It is heavy metal 😎👍. Last Christmas I got the HOTT CD711T BLACK specifically for the Bluetooth option. It works great. I use it with my IPX7 waterproof wireless speaker in the shower. It also proved to be a good solution for the lack of a CD player in my new Honda Accord. This weekend I decided to upgrade by ordering the new HOTT CD903TF, it boasts a better lithium battery, backlight, bluetooth and FM transmitter. So we'll see. I'm looking forward to getting it today.

Same here. Looking for a high quality Japanese brand player with Bluetooth to go in my high quality Japanese brand car that stupidly isn't made anymore with a CD player (nor even an AUX input). The Hott CD903TF you mentioned seems to be the better of the Chinese stuff.

At one time I owned a uniquely featured ‘EMERSON’ (brand name) portable CD/MP3 player that had the ability to navigate the disc via keypad. Play functions as play-thru, random play and repeat were normal for regular audio and MP3s, But the unique feature for MP3s was it had a numerical keyboard. You entered a two numerical number designated for a folder then a three numerical number for a file (song). I realized that the user would have to keep printed catalog song list for each disc and disc could have hundreds of songs. Still, you’d be the HIT of the party. I don’t understand why a navigational feature like this didn’t go mainstream with many manufacturers. Nevertheless, I have fond memories of my Emerson player.

I had a Panasonic portable Cd in the late 1980s and only used it a few times on weekend trips. Kept in a zippered case that has 12 sleeves for up to 24 discs too. Sold it to a coworker sometime during the 90s. Very nice, but after all was unused. Since my first MP3 player in 2001, I've used various MP3 players smart phones to listen on--the-go. Finally a Fiio. First one 2001 was an early Samsung YEPP, Samsung YP-NDU So tiny I could close my fist around it. It used SmartMedia cards . Quite amazing to listen to first mp3s on shuffle!

My old Sony all metal thin elegant cd player I bought 30 years ago .. has the most useful feature of all .. a digital optical out, which I could use with an optical to coaxial converter with my amplifier (Monitor audio A100) which has a good dac (digital to analogue converter) in it It’s only recently that I was able to get a CD player .. an Amazon branded device (costs £20 and has a very functional remote ) which runs off a standard phone charger or external battery pack for phone charging. (Which makes it movable .. possible to play it without a mains charger unit) Importantly it has a coaxial wired digital out (and hdmi) which I connect to the dac in my amp and sounds indistinguishable from the great mains £400 Arcam cd player I have .. which has great digital to analogue conversion . My new set up has a tiny foot 🦶 print in my living room. Very pleased with it and cost £20. The A100 amp can be had 2nd hand for 100 to £200

Used to have these Sony and Panasonic portable CD player. Those were my life when i was young. Music kept me and save my life.

I have one of those Panasonic CD players you mentioned and I absolutely love it, definitely get one if you can find one. (Plus you can turn off the 40 second anti skip if you want)

Back in the 1993, Sony made an wireless Discman called D-626. (Not Bluetooth) I like your collection of portable CD players! I still don’t have any Bluetooth equipments…

New Bluetooth connectivity is able to provide very high-quality audio.

The reason why you listen to CD is for lossless audio. Using bluetooth will compress that audio so it defeats the purpose.

That may be your main purpose, but the most common purpose is 'listening to music' The ideal purpose of purchasing a CD is ownership, it isn't going to disappear one day at the whim of the artist or failure of some license arbitration. I could go on, but there are lists of reasons anyone can search if interested. The bluetooth quality depends on the circuitry/DAC and protocol used mostly, and of course headphones. If someone decides to use wireless let them, it's not your place to tell anyone how to enjoy their life or what is 'proper' use, unless it significantly improves their experience with something they're struggling with such as proper battery installation or how to activate bluetooth etc. That said, some people literally cannot hear the difference, it's not a bad thing, just as some people wear glasses and don't appreciate micro details.

I just bought a 9 year old car that doesn't have a cd player and I've been watching videos to learn the cheapest and easiest way to listen to a CD on my weekly 2 hour drive. I stumbled across your video wondering if any of those players would have bluetooth. ( As I am old and many years behind the times) Glad I stayed until the end of the video. A free bluetooth speaker came with the purchase of my new android phone. This gives me another option... THANKS !!

I'd take it that you could also use Bluetooth to connect to your car stereo if you don't have a CD player in it.

I have a HOTT CD711T with bluetooth that works well in my new Honda, so I'm guessing this one should work in your car too.

From the UK, the first portable cd player I had was the Sony one you showed at the start. Still have it

I think I am also about your age Recordology Dude. My first portable cd player was a Kenwood also. I remember getting it as a Christmas gift during the late 90s. Great collection 👌 Newer models may have convince but I feel that vintage ones where made to last provided you took care of them.

If you want something else a little different try the Panasonic SL-VP45, the SL-VP33, SL-VP36, SL-VP40, SL-VP48 or the Technics SL-VP50). Some of these have full size wireless remotes and all (I think) can play Video CDs (Version 2?), as well as audio CDs and CDRWs. Ideal for Karaoke but also for watching Video CD movies as well. I think I have a 48, which I got a while back, but haven't got around to trying it. Partly because I don't have any CDG CDs at the moment. It also comes with mic terminal, digital echo, digital key control, slide jogger, and can show still images (when connected up to a Tv). Just some info, hope this helps.

I have about four maybe five portable CD players. That square Sony Discman was my very first CD player. Skipped like crazy. I think the latest CD player that I bought has bluetooth. A-B is when you hit the button once and the player puts a mark at that point of the song and then when you press the button again it puts the B mark and then the player repeatedly plays between those two points in the song. Pressing the button a third time clears both marks.

Even Memorex added Bluetooth to their latest Portable CD Players

I don't know why, but I think your Kenwood came straight from the Star Trek Federation of Planets. It simply looks like a space-travelling vehicle to my eyes. I love its design.

I think my problem is that portable CD players can go through batteries quick, especially when they get old. My HOTT does and I haven't used it in like a year because I never bothered getting more AA's.

Lenco has a cd player with Bluetooth. Lenco also has a cd player with and DAB+ radio. The cheap Tyler placer looks like my OK. Cd player. (Same factory) The OK. player adds warmth to the music. But you can definitely hear how the motor, to spin the disc, is affecting the amplification. Also the display jeeps glitching. I am looking to buy an Aiwa cd player. But the particular model looks like a Tyler. So I guess they come from same factory.

They have cassette walkman.That will do the same thing so you could bluetooth your village to set walkmans to your stereo bluetooth speaker connect

I just got a CD player with a unique feature as well! I got the Sony Discman D-465 and what's that thing's secret claim to fame? It has a legit digital optical output!

Maybe the A and B switches are the two headphone inputs. That would be my guess, based on experience with various AIO's that had more than one headphones jack.

I bought one, a year later, the headphone output malfunctioned, i contacted the company and they sent me a new one.

I just use a USB disk drive these days, and will continue to do so. It just werks.

nice collection of portable cd players, i bought the walmart brand last year and sadly it lasted only a couple of months before it died. i also purchased an oackcastle cd player about three months ago and was pretty confident that it was going to be a good quality unit, but again the player was defective after using it a handfull of times. it would just stop playing after a couple of tracks. luckily i was refunded my money by amazon. needless to say i don't have a lot of confidence in new players because i think the quality is just not there anymore. i would like to try one more time, but i don't want to get screwed again, any suggestions of what you think would be the best bet? i just want a simple player that will last more than a month or two. thanks , enjoyed seeing all of your players!

I recommend you go to your local thrift shop or goodwill last time I was there I saw a nice metallic blue Panasonic portable cd player and a Sony those are the most reliable and strong kinds that were made to last they just don’t make things like they use to. Your best bet find a Sony or Panasonic to have any chance of getting a reliable portable cd player that’s stand the test of time

My MAN!!! Thank you for this misty, watercolor-ed, though bittersweet trip down memory lane! Sigh! I remember the hilarious "long box" without which every major record label and retailer were 100% SURE no CompactDisc had a hope in Hell of EVER selling! Much more seriously, I also remember those "dark days", shelling out for some HORRIBLE-sounding, (carelessly-mastered) first run Sony and Atlantic CDs. None of that did anything to help the street cred of digital audio in general or CDs in particular. Finally who can forget the HILARIOUS "green magic marker disc mod conspiracy"? Speaking of "green" I have a suspicion the legend of the "green" magic marker was something that came from the same source as the aphrodisiac properties of "green M&Ms" thirty years earlier or drinking Coca-Cola fortified with dissolved aspirins or smoking dried banana peels for a buzz? Sadly, in this age of social media sophistication, nostalgia for this kind of teenage folklore is now gone and probably best forgotten...(except the aspirin thing!). As for me I've had some embarrassment of my own. Buying new CDs as gifts could be considered TOTALLY passe now.15 years ago this finally caught up with me in a MOST-embarrassing way. It took my teenage nephew to very gently hip me to the fact that he, his sister (my niece) and every other Millennial "Don't really play CDs and don't own CD players anymore Uncle Tim...". I realized that although I had definitely made my bones with vinyl and tape in the 80s, I was "CD-co-dependent" part of the problem by continuing to pay dues with the CompactDisc. Where it has it left me? My KINGDOM for a green magic marker!!! Color me "subscribed"! - Tim

You don't have to be embarrassed by using a CD player. The audio quality on a CD in terms of bitrate is 1,411kbps. Most streaming websites only have 128kbps. And MP3s max out at 320kbps. Anyone that cares about audio quality will notice the difference immediately if you listen to each format back to back. Those that don't care about the audio quality will be happy with their phones or other device that can play digital audio files as long as it sounds good to them. I started using my CD player again at home earlier this year. The quality is better than anything online. Plus, CDs are super cheap now because many people are either selling, trashing, or giving them away. Last month I picked up over 100 CDs for $3. Came across some gems of albums. I now have some new favorite tunes! And they sound better than their online counterparts! Tell that to all the hipsters :)

I read a story years ago about a surge in emergency room visits for stitches at Christmas time when blister packs became common.

So you know a standalone CD player that outputs USB Audio? That would make it easy to use a portable USB dac/amp with? Only ones I see are the ripping drives that need to be connected to laptops etc so don't qualify as standalone CD players. Thx

Now I've used a number of CD players over the years, including mp3 cd players but I still have my trusty Walkman from highschool. During lockdown I was looking at older models from 00s to see if I could find a better model as an adult I can afford to buy something that wasn't budget and found a nice dock charging Sony with specialized LiPo batteries (that are still manufactured for minidisc players) that sit inside the player as you mentioned. I found this model really neat as it works with an LCD remote, now my phone and smartwatch do all the same with no wires but there's a special charm about gadgets from turn of the century. I would really love to have USB-C charging or Bluetooth options on any CD player, I'll take a look into this one you've shown here, though I'm curious as to how much that affects battery life. My Sonys last 18-20 hours with wire, so assuming wireless uses a bit more juice. I'm not a huge fan of SD card on a CD player but see the utility of it, simply adding a couple songs but what I think would be a nice feature would be if it could rip the disc to SD as my Blu-ray player does. I know that's a bit more niche and too many options there to please everyone, I think I'll have to settle for a minidisc player for that. I really wish some old skool company would cater to this demographic manufacturing quality CD players as it's still the most popular physical media in production, and seemingly has a trend upward in the past few years. We may see some better options come to market. Great video, I'll check out another one of yours soon.

Lol, back in the day with an Audiovox (KMart) portable CD player. No antiskip. Went to Radio Shack and bought a shock mount and mounted it to the floor and used a cassette adapter. 🤣🤣🤣

The D-131 was also my first CD player. It's very basic but did its job well. I got a D-844K Car Discman a few years later.

Agreed - I ended up going to Kenwood which sounded even better to me.

Since this is a Bluetooth machine-bet I can use it with the sound system in my car. I HATE that new cars don't have the built in CD players.This is somewthing this old codger wants!!!!That is the thing I don't like on my new '21 car-NO CD machine!I also loved it when cars used to have CD changers with car sound system.Load it up and you were good for the day of "motoring" to places.

You know? If you want an old school CD Walk man to have a rechargeable battery. Just buy two AA rechargeable batteries and a charger! Hey, and you can replace them too!

I collect home audio cd players. Been looking at old Rega cd players, because they are top loading. Some of the early phillips cd players from the 80s are pretty groovy also.

Everything looks "more of the same". A portable device able to run HDCD, SACD, DVD and Blu Ray audio, and Flac and MP3 recorded DVDs or CDs is an instant buy. Bluetooth is a "minimal" feature on any equipment these days, The device showed doesnt even says the protocol that it uses (SBC is awful, APTX is great).

Correction: I actually have a Panasonic SL-VP50 as far as I can tell, at least that's what the box says; I can't get to it easily, but was able to see the box again at least, when I looked for it.

Does it compromise the sound quality when listening through Bluetooth device compared to wired? Also can I plug in my Sony WH1000XM4 overhead noise cancelling headphones with the wire and listen through them? The headphones have amazing sound quality and I'm wondering if I can pair it with this cd player and get fantastic music quality. Thanks in advance!

That’s a tough question… $50 or Less used is going to be pretty low. My recommendation is get some thing with a Magnetic cartridge not a ceramic… That is if you want sound quality over vintage design aesthetic

Maybe check around thrift stores, garage sales, etc.. I got my 1972 HH Scott from the local Goodwill for $25 CDN, including a mounted Audio Technica AT11 cartridge. All it needed was a new stylus.

I need your help! I have tons of CD's and just lost my 80's-90's external mini speakers in a fire. They were AWAI, I think, and had the option of being self-powered by wall plug or 4 D Cell batteries. I can't find any on the net so far - I need them for when I am away from electricity and the Discman -based set up is all on batteries, and patched with a Y mini cord/plugs from the earphone jack. Can anyone help me find a pair?? Thanks!

I was searching ebay for cd players. A couple that I clicked on and scrolled down, the seller had some. I do not know if they are what you are looking for. Goodwill and Salvation Army Maybe. They opened an Ecotown nearby. They have so many speakers, that they will not take any more. Unless they are new in a box!

If cds are really coming back I wish Sony, Panasonic, Sanyo come up with decent modern cd players to save us from weird chinese brands on amazon. Not those super expensive minicomponents like Onkyo, Yamaha, Denon, etc that only rich guys can buy. And please no more cheap black plastic in every electronic device. Why is everything black and with little black text no one can read...

The comment about CD players with removable batteries: CD players that are already 20+ years old lasting another 20 years is Not realistic. I have worn out a lot of CD players from the 80s. I am not talking about dropping them and breaking them either. I have used CD players for 12 plus hours a day. I still do. I listen to CD music as I work 12+ hours a day. If you use electronics they will wear out. They were not made to last for decades. I think it is insane to buy old outdated technology. Modern CD players sound much better than the Old CD players from the 80s. I have never had a Battery unit installed in my electronics die on me. In the 80s I never used batteries, what a huge waste. I always plugged my CD players into an outlet. They were made with a power jack. The modern CD players are made to plug in too, with USB C. If you use your CD players plugged in you don't have to worry about the Battery dying. Let's say the Battery does die... It will still work plugged in. Again electronics don't last forever. If you get 3 years of continuous use out of any CD player than you are doing good 👍😃.

$80 for that CD Player? Get out of here, they're price gouging, the most popular CD Player on Amazon is less than $20, and that $80 one looks like its made from the same generic Chinese factory
