👖 Nondestructive Jeans Hem Keep Original Hem Sewing Start to Finish

Here's a link to the tool that helps the machine pass over bulky seams: amzn.to/2tqCIbF
Made this video for my dad, because when I lived at home and tailored his pants, I wish I had known how to do this.
Instead of folding the hem inwards and stitched down through all layers, the hem is folded to the outside, with the distance between the inner edge of the original hem (where you will be sewing) and the fold being 1/2 the amount of length you're taking up.

    This is the best tutorial I've found that explains the way to measure; all the other ones have been confusing. Measuring 1/2 from the original hem makes sense! thank you for this.

    I don't have that type of foot for my sewing machine, but I found that the universal zipper foot can get snug against the hem and without the bulk to deal with. In my case it is a win / win situation.

    I hem almost the same with one difference. I take excess and cut off to 1/4" and hide inside seam so it looks clean and totally original. I finish off with matching denim hem thread that most sewing stores carry. Wash after wash a better way to go.

    I have a video for that too. I use the non-destructive method if I'm still "test driving" the jeans/pants or if I intend to re-sell. I do the "trim" method when I know I'm keeping them ~_^

    I’m doing this today. I have about 4 pair to do. Would you please tell me the name of the thing you used that resembled a thick fork to hold down the denim. I may try to order one today. Thanks for the video. Need more new stuff from you. Janice

    Hi! I actually had to Google it. I've seen it referred to as a "Seam Jack", "Bulky Seam Aid", and "Jean A Ma Jig". Hope that helps. Happy sewing!

    I'm trying to google 'rocking tool' but can't seem to find anything similar to what you are using. Is it referred to by another name? Is this a tool that should be included when I purchase a new sewing machine? Thank you!

    Would this work well with trousers also? Might be a silly question- new to this!

    @gemfoxfoodandcraft

    Hello, it depends on the original hem of the trousers. If it has a visible hem, I’d say give it a try. If it’s a blind/invisible hem, then this method wouldn’t retain that invisibility since it’s edge stitched. Hope that helps. Happy crafting ^_^

    What kind of foot are you using

  • @gemfoxfoodandcraft

    @gemfoxfoodandcraft

    Hi! I was using the edge foot or edgestitch foot. It has a metal fin that rides along the folded edge of your fabric, and the needle will stitch right next to that, creating an edge stitch. It's a great foot that yields tidy results. Good luck!

    Hi there ! I'm a senior male who has never sewn anything before ! ha ha . I don't understand how this hem will work ? Where does the 4 inches of fabric go after stiching about 2 inches ( some kind of cuff ) ? Sorry, I'm very confused. I have lots of jeans to shorten ha ha.

    Hello! This method creates a folded flap that is half the amount to be taken up. That flop gets pressed upward, in other words the fold is facing up on the inside of the leg. You won’t see it at all, but you may feel it. Hope that helps. Good luck! ^_^

    But what if you need like more than 2 inches off from your pants?

  • @gemfoxfoodandcraft

    @gemfoxfoodandcraft

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hi :) The same method will work. For example, if you need to take up your jeans 4”, fold it back such that the allowance between the fold and your stitching line is 2”. Once you sew it, it will have non-destructively taken up 4”. Then just press the allowance up and tack it along the inseam and you’re golden. Good luck :)

    Hello, sorry it’s hard to hear me saying it in the video since I sped it up to 1.25 speed, but the foot I used was the edge foot that came with my machine. Rifle through your collection presser feet, there are a lot of great ones that come with most machines. Hope that helps. Happy crafting ^_^

    @@gemfoxfoodandcraft If they're 4" too long don't you have to add the 5/8 that you leave of the original hem and then divide by 2?

    Hello, Peter. Since I do not cut off and re-hem the hem, I do not have to account for it. I sometimes take up my jeans at the knee using a similar technique; and in the same manner, I do not have to add the length of the hem since I am leaving it intact. Hope that makes sense! Good luck!

    I have another video that shows the excess being trimmed off. I buy and resell clothing so if I know I won't be wearing it often, I'll leave the allowance there to be let out later for resale. I understand your point, thank you!

    Thanks for your comment. Not sure how other KZreadrs do it, but this works for me. I really like the option to take the hem out in case I want to lengthen or revert to its original length.
