Whenever I go to check a starter, like you did, I make the last connection to the machine frame (ground). That avoids arcing and possibly damaging the terminal on the starter. I just use a jumper wire to trigger the solenoid, quick, simple test. Another idea, I keep a rich 2 cycle gas mix in a pump type oil can, use that to prime an engine. It provides some cylinder lube. I also use 2 cycle mix in the gas tank at first, for the same reason. The mixed fuel lasts longer if it's a job you won't get back to soon. Will keep you in mind next time I need Kohler parts.

You are the best ! Norman! I have always been a huge huge fan. Now here in February ~ of course ~ I'm thinking of Springtime ~ and my old Craftsman and my "never gonna run" Murray (the neighbor just gave me that one). You are an inspiration. Thank you so much. I hope that those solonoids are still for sale. I'll buy one just to have the "box" as a "collectors" item. Best wishes ~ and I hope you are still "in the world!" ✨🌸🙏🌸✨

Hi Norman! Great video and step by step differential diagnosis is right on the money and straight to the point. Fuel/Fire/Air timed right must run! I'm a very frugal kinda guy and only thing I'm seeing is the heavy grip sandpaper. I'd first use a brass wire wheel which takes off the corrosion and don't eat up the contact post. (bench grinder) Then if need be - Emery cloth which is much easier to work with as it is less stiff and will fold nicely to get into those nooks and crannies. Backside of the contact posts will require this. I've seen lots of guys squirt the carb cleaner in the plug hole but I'm kinda agin it as this is a little hard on the bore if taken to excess and used too often. Once to look for fire Ok! But some guys will think that this is the best and easiest was to start their tractor overtime. If you do you can wash down the cylinder wall and lose lubrication and even compression. Like all good things; only good in moderation. Looking forward to your next video. Hope my comments are not too critical. You make a lot of good sense. Take care, Lee

Nice! I cant tell you how many times I bought broken stuff and it was a wire or a very simple thing. I hate key-switches,solenoids, and safety switches! Often poor quality and almost always the issue(s). I would pay 4x the going rate for components that were reliable but I have found this is impossible to get locally. Many times the new components are bad or fail early.

A few words about the continuity function of multimeters. A tone may make you think you have a low resistance path when this may be far from the case. Some meters may give a tone up to 250 ohms. Be sure and check the display for the value of resistance being measured.

I’m MikeJD60 but on my other account, but I just bought a 1973 sears st16 w the 16OHV Tecumseh, the engine runs, but I predator swapped it cuz I need a tractor that isn’t a gas hog. I still have the engine, on a pallot in the back of the barn. It needs a Jew switch, a carburetor, fuel pump, & a few other things. I’m using the predator because I can use it all day & only use about 1/2 to 1 gallon of gas. Just for taking wood to the burn pile, taking trash out, & mudding. Whereas my 82 212 will drink 3 gallons in Th ensame amount of time, these old tractors are great, but they are giant gas hogs, & in addition to that they need Ethonol free gas.

Thanks for the tip of the jumper cables to the starter, I'll try that later.

I broke the aluminum starter pulley on the engine. I have not been able to find that anywhere. Also I need to find a drive shaft adapter that goes on the engine. I think the problem that engine has is that it has bad spark so I need to clean up the points and see if it'll start. I'm definitely checking out your website I hope you have what I need.

That's my tractor!! I'm having some trouble with the charging. If I disconnect the stator while it's running, it shuts down. Does that mean the charging is still putting something out? Also is it possible to change it over to a magneto system instead of the battery ignition? Worst case scenario is I'll charge the battery externally. I should mention though that I had to replace the fuel pump to an electric one. So i would need to have enough power just to run the pump. Looks like there's still some odd pieces of stuff being blown out of it.

Tough question that comes up a lot. I plan on making a video on this very topic. I seem to like them all, as they all have a different approach. But the tractor I use the most is the Ford LGT 145 with Front End Loader. It gets on average 2 hours of use every day 365 days a week. The second most used is the Ingersoll 4118. I am currently restoring a Simplicity 4040 Powermax for this channel, and I plan on using that heavily in my large garden because of the high ground clearance. So as you see, each brand, make and model are better at certain tasks than others.

Could also be a bad ground connection between starter motor, and battery ground.

You should never underestimate the stupidity of former owners! I have hade many old tractors and machinery that some smart ass “repaired”. Installing a ignition switch or connecting a carburetor to the engine must be like rocket science to some people. Anyway what I mean is that you should check even the most stupid things if you don’t get it running. All it takes is fuel, air, compression and a spark, everything in correct timing and it works. Good video, I like the “magic” solenoid trick, only thing that would have made it even better would be a text: Magic is not included, must be bought separately. Regards Nils

Norman: I have a 312-8 tractor as you have in this video and it has worked great for us however, now I have a leaking gas tank and can find no instruction about how to replace or what to check for. I'm stumped. Please help.

Hi there. First thing to do is check where the leak is. Is it coming from the fuel valve on the bottom? If so you can replace the busing and valve. We sell them both. If the tank has a Crack in it you can plastic weld it. First step identify where its coming from and then let me know via email

You can remove the tank but first you remove the rear fenders

Hey! Great vid.. I have the same tractor with the same issue. The previous owner replaced the solenoid and key tumbler and still nothing. Where are you hooking up your multimeter to test continuity? One of the replacements he did may have been DOA and I guess I should test it to see if I need to order from you.

You could simply bridge / bypass the solenoid with screwdriver. If it still didn't crank you have a bad wiring connection or battery. Remember he replaced both first.

Hope you might be able to help me. I have a 520-H. I got on and tried to start it and nothing. No dash lights, not solonoid click, nothing. I checked the battery and it was old so I bought a new one. Same thing. I looked at the fuse box and it was covered in dirt and grass. I cleaned them off, brushed the fuses off, and blowed out all the contacts and added some contact cleaner. WOW, it started right up. I mowed a few rounds and my deck belt broke, so I replaced it, started the tractor and before I even moved, it died, and the same thing happened. Turn the key and nothing, no lights, no clicking or anything. Do you have any suggestions I might try to fix this. Thanks in advance!
