This would be a strange left turn, but "Strength Beyond Strength" has always been my favorite. Pure, unfiltered anger and energy and fuckin evil as shite. Disgusting song... I love it.

They weren't going for a "Metallica feel", they were going for a Pantera feel.

I saw Pantera open for megadeth in 93' at pine knob in Michigan and several times after and I saw Metallica several times starting in 1985's "Monsters of Rock" (kingdom come, Metallica, scorpions, Dokken and Van Halen) there has never been a single second Where I said, this sounds like Metallica, I don't know if it's his age, lack of metal knowledge or both. Regardless, I'm very happy to see Real authentic Metal making it well into the 21st century and to a new generation.

Previously the Pantera " feel" was way more 80s Style metal, versus this which had a lot more to do with thrak elements especially I'm not going to say stealing from directly... But very influenced by a band that was on Phil's radar called "Exhorder". So I don't know about there being any sort of Pantera feel in and of itself at this point, but they were strictly headed towards one that would manifest big-time on the records after this.

This song is incredible, Dimebag's playing and Phil's vocal work is on point.

Song always give me chills throughout. Probably one of my favorite's of all time

Pantera never tried to sound like Metallica. They sounded like Pantera. Knew them since their big hair band days. Plus, Hetfield can’t sing like this.

I've got to say my favorite pantera song is "5 minutes alone" The riffs in that song really put the "groove" in "groove metal"

The intro, deep lyrical theme, Anselmos vocal performance and that riff is the parts that make the difference from like to love for me.

Aight, you're pretty spot on with everything (although I'd be fighting you on that Metallica similarity). Main thing I felt you missed is the guitar nerd factor. Dime is doing some pretty interesting and unique stuff technique-wise in this song. All this is making this song 10/10 for me personally, but I have to admit I'm biased. Love your reaction and analysis, my first video of yours I watched, definitely gonna check out your channel for more! My recommendation: Bat Country by Avenged Sevenfold

I really enjoy your insightful commentary on all of these metal songs. I would love to hear what you think of something like King Diamond's "Abigail", the title track from the concept album Abigail, which is a story about a husband and wife dealing with a haunted house. The song in particular is a conversation between the man and his wife who has been possessed by a ghost (the titular Abigail). The whole album is incredibly creative, and specifically that title track is one of the standouts, with really impressive instrumentation and King Diamond's vast vocal range (countertenor and falsetto) bringing the various characters to life. King Diamond has been an influence on many other bands, including Metallica (who even have covered several of King Diamond's songs).

One song that i think you would enjoy by Pantera is the name of the album (what a coincidence) “Cowboys From Hell”

Regarding the usage of acoustic intros, I definitely wouldn’t chalk it up as just a metal thing. It’s not super common in metal, although it does get used sometimes by bands like Metallica, Opeth, and Pantera, and it almost always works really well. also here’s some song recommendations bc yeah Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath The song that started it all. The opening track on the first metal album ever made. Also has some really creepy vibes, so that’s cool. Black Sabbath - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath My personal favorite Black Sabbath song. The best part is the ending, which is so much heavier than it really needed to be and yet is still able to be very emotional. Death - Crystal Mountain The best song in the catalogue of one of the all-time greats of extreme metal, this song is about the evils and deceit in many religious organizations. Guns N' Roses - November Rain Not really metal but I’m recommending it anyway bc it’s easily the best song in their entire catalogue. It’s something you kinda just have to listen to at some point. Iron Maiden - 2 Minutes to Midnight One of Iron Maiden’s best songs, this one is about the closest we’ve ever come to nuclear warfare. Iron Maiden - Wasted Years A criminally underrated song and one of Bruce Dickinson's best performances in my opinion. Judas Priest - Breaking the Law A good introduction to Judas Priest, who's lead singer, Rob Halford, is one of the best metal vocalists ever, right alongside Bruce Dickinson and Ronnie James Dio. Judas Priest - Painkiller An absolutely delightful track where Rob Halford sounds really evil for some reason. Megadeth - Countdown to Extinction A very solid song with a strong message about the evils of trophy hunting. Megadeth - Holy Wars... the Punishment Due One of Megadeth’s best songs, and probably the best songs to use as an introduction to this band, who play a style of thrash metal somewhat similar to that of Metallica and are (or were, idk it’s complicated) kind of a rival to that band. Megadeth - Peace Sells A more political song from this band, with an anti-war message. Megadeth - Tornado of Souls My personal favorite Megadeth song, featuring what may be the best guitar solo in all of metal. Metallica - Creeping Death One of Metallica’s best songs. This one is about the story of the plagues of Egypt, with the twist being that it’s told from the perspective of the angel of death. Metallica - The Four Horsemen A pretty straightforward one. Probably the best song from their debut album, Kill 'Em All, which is their most aggressive sounding album. Opeth - The Baying of the Hounds One of the best songs by one of the titans of progressive metal. Opeth - Blackwater Park see above Opeth - The Moor Another really good one from this band, this one uses an acoustic intro that, in my opinion, sounds very little like the one in Fade to Black. Pantera - This Love Another power ballad from Pantera, this one is about a relationship that went south. Slayer - South of Heaven A really good introduction to Slayer, who are definitely the heaviest and most aggressive of the “big four” of thrash metal (Anthrax, Megadeth, Metallica, Slayer).

I agree with this list! I came to these comments hoping to suggest “Still Life”-era Opeth or “Symbolic”-era Death. Opeth seems just pretentious enough to be enjoyed here. “The Moor” specifically was eye opening for me when it came out. I was a snob who shrugged off harsh vocals until I listened to Still Life. Things haven’t been the same since (for the better)!

@@coreysprague For me, the track that made me realize “hey, these vocals actually sound kinda cool” was Into Everlasting Fire by Immolation, but Mikael Åkerfeldt definitely has the best death growls I’ve ever heard.

10:41 to answer your question Dimebag Darryl “lead guitar” is using a technique called finger tapping to make it feel like he’s playing faster than he is. Finger tapping utilizes both hands to execute. one hand is fretting or fingering the string and the other hand is tapping on the neck of the guitar hitting other frets. Using this technique with hammer on’s and pulloff’s makes its sound like his fingers are moving faster than they are. I highly recommend looking up a “guitar cover” of this song that way you can see it with your own eyes. Don’t have to do it on the channel, just do it when you have a minute. Let me know when you do. I’d like to hear your feedback

I saw them play this live, he isn't tapping the solo. I can play this solo at speed and I'm nowhere near as technically proficient as he was.

Evergrey - "In Orbit". Great Swedish metal band and, for this song, they have Floor Jansen from Nightwish as a guest vocalist. Needless to say, it's a tremendous song! Other songs by Evergrey that are worth checking out would be "Distance", "Eternal Nocturnal", "A Silent Arc", and "Paradox of the Flame". Paradox is a duet between the lead singer and his wife. Very emotional, very moving, and the short guitar solo at the end is just downright cool!

you have mentioned few times that there are some similarities to metallica's music and that made me notice something. you have listened to relatively lot of metallica (comparing to other metal bands) but you haven't give a try to any other thrash metal band. I'd recommend giving a chance to some other representatives of this subgenre of metal. I think you should at least give a listen to other bands of "big 4". big 4 (or big 4 of thrash metal) is how people often refer to 4 most influential thrash metal bands that defined and strongly shaped this subgenre - metallica, megadeath, anthrax and slayer. as I noticed you try to start getting into artist's music by listening to more popular and iconic songs, not some deep cuts so I'd recommend these 3 songs: holy wars the punishment due by megadeath the enemy by anthrax crypts of eternity by slayer

Great reaction. I actually did vocals for this song in a band I sang for and its insanely difficult to do well. I'm still gonna keep dropping some Dream Theater suggestions cuz i think itd blow your minds just how many variations of metal there actually are. "Metropolis Pt 1-The Miracle and the Sleeper" is my suggestion. And hey, if folk metal ever gets a shot here, Eluveitie would be an awesome one to hear you're guys' opion on, specifically "Rebirth"

Floods is the real masterpiece of Pantera

Fair enough. I will say, even if you don't end up liking those songs, it would still be interesting. You just listened to the most mainstream appealing pantera song by far, and it's so early in their career. Most bands, even the most acclaimed ones, like metallica, tend to soften their sound as time goes on. Pantera is the rare band to do the exact opposite. I think the contrast would be interesting enough to make a video on. Even if the overall score is also a stark contrast lol

"I wasn't expecting that" (blazing guitar solo by dime bag) Pantera has a song called "the art of shredding" PSA: Pantera shreds early and often.

I think Floods is also a song by them that's about the same length, or maybe a tad longer. Although I might be thinking about the extended version which has a longer section of Dime's wonderful guitar singing.

The ability of Pantera to show up and have the first 3 rows of seats be completely ripped out of concrete.....10/10 😂

Great video, loved it! i think you would find Blue Öyster Cult interesting. i reccomend listening to Dont fear the reaper, then came the last days of may, Burnin for you. all of them are good songs, my personal favourite is then came the last days of may though.

It would be interesting checking a classic that involves a lot of composition: Helloween - Keeper of the seven keys.

You truly can't understand Pantera unless you were around when this dropped. This made it okay for Metal Heads to attend Hardcore shows. Pantera crossed many genre's. Phil is an Amazing vocalist and a bad ass!!

I don't know if you are ready for it but I'm going to request Opeth Harlequin Forest. One of my favorite songs from them. In my opinion it's beautiful and brutal and complex.

I think Tim's vocals will lessen the harshness of Xen's vocals. Even if he doesn't like Xen's vocals, I'm pretty sure the music will leave a positive impression on him, regardless of harsh vocals or not

Very good, lads. The context of the switch of Pantera from glam to heavy-heavy is to be noted: Metal was a dying genre coming into the 90s, with punk coming back a bit and with the emergence of Grunge in the late 80s. You can see in Metallicas' albums, how much they played about with different styles, just trying to keep it alive, but I think Pantera were smart regarding their music. As far as I can see - at least for some singles which have to be more 'ballady', especially in the 90s - they took the simple power of Grunge, added a heavy dose of Sepultura and funked-it-up a bit, and they basically saved metal, in my opinion. A complete breath of life. It takes a very special breed of talent to do that. Dime was a really, really good guitarist... really (and musician). He lived and breathed it. With 80s metal, comes the showboating - huge solos that for me, didn't really fit into their songs half the time - and it was just as-standard, showboating which eventually got old. These guys didn't want to be pop-friendly-metal, like GnR or Bon Jovi, so created a new path, keeping their 80s metal but revamping it with the appealing structure of Grunge but getting heavier and heavier as the years went on. They nailed it. With Dime being so damn good, he made his guitar sing. Only four members of the band, and the live shows were brutal and proper amazing. The guitar becomes backup vocals (then takes lead, and back again) and the base (Rex) picked up the slack and kept the song tight and flowing when Dime went on an adventure. So very, very good. For a snippet of Dimes' solo skills - Domination live Moscow (1.6 million people at that gig in total) and a breakdown that broke the Soviet Union ;) Crazy-beautiful. Absolute kudos to the camera work at that gig, too! You can see how good Dime was. Effortless and mind blowing.

There is a sing on the same album called "the sleep". The solo there is terrifyingly beautiful. You should check it out

Pantera only went for Pantera. They were amazing live. I saw them twice right here in Dallas!

It's sort of a glam rock tradition to do a power ballad per album or more. But it's definitely not exclusive to metal. My favorite Pantera songs are all of them.

I’d say it’s a metal thing. Even before Metallica, Steve Harris was known for buildup in songs for Iron Maiden, still a very common trait even in their new material. Also can be heard in much of Black Sabbath.

Metallica wanted Geddy Lee of Rush to produce master of puppets. But he couldn't. They remind me of Rush with the alow intros. And some songs actually have Rush riffs. You can look that up on Google or KZread lol. And the fact that Pantera reminds you of Metallica just makes me happy to have lived through all of this amazing music and influence

you know, Rolling Stone magazine HAMMERED ALL of the led zeppelin albums. routinely and imfamously giving those albums negative reviews. years later those very same critics were forced to re-evaluate those same reviews and change them completely. it turns out that those critics REALLY didn't understand the genre at all. and after a couple of decades were able to go back and see completely how they missed the boat after being able to see and hear that genre in the long run. i feel that sometimes on this site, the same thing appears to be happening here.

Mouth for War, 5 Minutes Alone, Becoming and Cowboys from Hell are my other fave Pantera songs aside from this one. They are all so different but so good.

How about you give Empire of the Clouds by Iron Maiden a try at some point? It is quite a recent one released in 2015 and is quite long at 18 minutes but it is very original and manages to keep you engaged throughout with it's good story and nice production that you might like as well 😉

The score may seem a little low, but the way you explain it, I think it is fair. I heard this album when it came out and hearing it for the first time now I'm sure would be a different experience. Back then, there wasn't much music that sounded anything like this. They have other ballads, such as This Love from their next album, but Cemetery Gates is definitely my favorite song of theirs. After that, Anselmo got a little too "screamy" for my tastes.

Regarding the intro, King's X is a shared favorite band of members of Metallica and Pantera. The intro to both songs you played sound a lot like Doug Pinnick's "clean" guitar work

It's the kind of thing where you would have had to have been there to truly understand the impact this song and the album it came from had on the metal genre, much of it to do with the originality of how Dime and the drummer, Vinnie Paul, played rhythms. What separated this from Metallica and most other metals bands of the era was the groove they play with - they aren't as locked in mechanically the way the other bands were, and they are credited with pioneering a subgenre that became known as "Groove Metal". And also there were Dime's leads - he could shred with the best of them, but he also slow things way down and play with incredible emotion and expression, and he was also a master of those high pitched harmonic squeals and the use of the tremolo bar for dramatic highs, flutters, and dive bombs - all of which were used in this song. So yeah, the impact of the song was much greater than can be appreciated by just evaluating it with a scoreboard.

RIP Dimebag. We will always love you.

@@TheMusicKingdom Ghost Love Score is in a fan deemed triogy of songs, all of which the live versions are way better, cause... Nightwish/ Floor. The other two are Poet And The Pendulum (offical live at Wembly is the best version), and Greatest Show On Earth. For GSoE, there are two incredible versions, both live of course. The first is at Wembly w/ an appearance by Richard Dawkins himself... the other is live from Tampere. The tampere show has a different arangement than the Wembly show... and it's also outside so the effects are different... a fireworks show instead of Richard being there... and pipes in the beginning instead of guitar with e-bow. For that, it might be interesting to get your take on both... which version you prefer, etc. I would also consider Shoemaker. Shoemaker could be the 4th of this "triology". It's a new(er) song Tuomas wrote with Floor in mind, they agonized over the recording of the vocals (you'll hear why), and both the official lyric video (studio version of the song) and the live version are EXCELLENT! For the live, I would recommed the version from Hellfest 2022. I think any of these will challenge GLS for the top spot on your grading system. This band is loaded with talent and Tuomas didn't get the nickname Metal Mozart without reason. And Floor... you already got a good taste for what she's capable of at the Wacken '13 show...

A lot of these metal musicians are classically trained and song like this are ballad's and or power ballads

Please, oh please, review the song Desperate Cry by a band called "Sepultura". I saw Sepultura live with Pantera, and if you enjoyed Pantera, I am telling you that you will enjoy Sepultura's Brazilian version of thrash metal, too, probably. Give it a shot. (other bangers from Sepultura include Chaos A.D., Propaganda, Roots Bloody Roots, and Kaiowas, etc)

As a huge Pantera fan, I only like this song for a few days when I first heard and today, it doesn’t even rank in my top 25 favorite/best Pantera songs of all time list. It is the album where Phil has his best clean vocals by far though. Over time drugs played a part in him going screaming and rawrs which made Pantera complete imho. Their best songs are on the albums The Great Southern Trendkill and Far Beyond Driven which are much more hardcore, but Dime’s solo’s might actually be the best on the Cowboys From Hell album…. So it’s kinda all over the place for me, but Rex and Vinnie maintain rock god status throughout the entirety of Pantera and Vinnie is probably the most underrated drummer of all time… and it should go without saying that Dime is in the top 3 metal guitarists of all time if not THE BEST EVER and Phil’s vocals are fantastic when clean and top 5 best cleans ever and his screams and rawrs are truly amazing as well… that’s my Pantera synopsis in a nutshell lol. 🤘🏼✌🏼

Coincidence, you showing the Ride The Lightning album. They first met & backed-up Metallica on the Ride The Lightning Tour.

You said that longer songs can become uninteresting if it's just repeating stuff, so I challenge you to listen to Dante's Inferno by Iced Earth. It's a little over 16 minutes and is based on The Divine Comedy.

Comparing this band with metallica is like comparing a wheelbarrow with a Mercedes-Benz.

Personally, my favorite Pantera song is "The Floods". It has one of the greatest guitar solos in metal history. But unfortunately the guitarist for Pantera was literally murdered on stage while preforming in front of several hundred people. Dimebag Darrell was and will always be a legendary guitarist!

If you want to try something different that's not as much a ballad as this one, with emotional lyrics from these guys, try Suicide Note Pt 1 & 2 - they kind of go together but have a different sound. I always interpret part one as heroine abuse, OD'ing and almost dying and the shame that comes from it (since that's what happened to Phil) Part two being pure frustration on how he got in that situation and the anger about not being able to get out of it.

I'm 49 and this is definitely one of my top 100

So your grade seems fair but let me tell you that the solo in this song is listed as one of "The 10 most difficult guitar solos to play" and also "Guitar World magazine readers voted the song's solo the 35th-greatest of all time". And my favorite pantera song is: "Walk"

I don't hear the similarity in Cemetery Gates and Fade to Black, that's a stretch. Cemetery Gates has a much more American country sound in the intro; Metallica is more classical. And the chords and notes and rhythm were different.

I could see someone that doesn't listen often to metal thinking it's similar. But I agree it's so different. Metallica could never match Pantera for feel and soul or skill .
