Yoongi got into an accident before their debut and broke his shoulder, when he was working as a delivery driver. This is why we see him repeatedly get into a crash in this music video. For fear of Big Hit kicking him out of the company, Yoongi didn’t tell anyone about his shoulder. I’m pretty sure that he didn’t go to the hospital, or he did but he wasn’t able to pay for it as his family was suffering from financial problems at the time. He finally got surgery for his shoulder in 2020 so he was on hiatus during Life Goes On promotions. I can’t imagine how he went through training, dancing everyday and doing complex routines with the pain. He deserves the world🥺🫶

the last scene of the mv is heartwrenching. He tried to reach the door but failed. on his very last day of his world tour last year he performed in Seoul. The last scene, after he said goodbye, was exactly this door, they recreated this scene of Amygdala on stage. Yoongi opened the door, turned around, smiled and went off. I think all of us were in tears. What a moment.

There are a few reasons why this video only has 12M views on YT. 1. YT is well known for filtering the streams of ALL BTS songs. 2. This video is hard to watch. Most ARMYs cried while watching this video for the first time. Yoongi’s willingness to share such private aspects of his life for the first time (such as his mom’s heart surgery and his dad getting diagnosed with liver cancer) was so shocking and heart wrenching. The trauma of his accident was shown here to its full extent and how it really affected him. I was fortunate enough to have watched his concert in Singapore last year, and it was so emotional. The most profound moment we all shared was during the final concert, when he finally walked through that door, signifying his healing. I bawled my eyes out when that happened. 😭😭😭

The part in the MV where we see him cutting his face, is a reference to the eye scar he has in Daechwita and Haegeum. So AMYGDALA is actually a prequel. Yoongi had an accident when he was a trainee. He was working as a delivery driver to pay for his tuition and had a car accident which damaged his shoulder. He was afraid to tell BigHit in case they sent him away. He told the other members that he fell down the stairs. He couldn’t afford to have the surgery needed to fix it. He eventually had surgery in 2020 to correct the damage but for years he had terrible pain and would often suffer during performances with intense choreography. Mama and Papa Yoongi are still around thankfully despite the health issues outlined in the song. For more emotional Yoongi songs I recommend: The Last Snooze (feat. Woosung and Ryuichi Sakamoto) He’s very introspective and raw. If you want emotions, Yoongi is the guy! ☺️

I'm 54 year old ARMY from NZ. Yoongi is my bias. I rarely watch the video or listen to the song because it hurts me. It's so traumatic and we all know that Yoongi endured pain for years. We are also acutely aware of his struggles with mental health and depression. He is so loved and appreciated that it's hard for me and for ARMY to know how much he suffered. It's portrayed in such a beautifully tragic way, that it's quite heartbreaking. But we're also grateful of the trust he has in ARMY to embrace it. Genius.

Cutting his eye is how he got the scar in Daechwita and Haegeum, which is how the trilogy all fits together. Basically, his way of handling trauma led to the creation of Agust D, where a lot of his earlier music was full of rage and pain (The Last for example. A hard listen but great insight into his past).

Yoongi has been through a lot and has always been open about it in his lyrics. He has some songs that make it very clear how he struggled with mental health in the past and tries to comfort others that might be going through similar situations too. He was assumed to be cold and rude even a few years ago but he has now accepted all of the things in his past and now is often seen as a chill, sweet, warm and comforting person. He talks about how his personality and even mental health changed over the time and discusses about the journey of his emotions frequently.

Amygdala is really so close to my heart. This is not just a song, but Yoongi's truth, literally a part of him that he allowed us to see. And what made this experience even more memorable is the fact that for the trilogy, he chose Amygdala to close that chapter. In the mv, it showed that no matter how much he tried to open the door to his memories, what's done is done. But in Yoongi's final concert, he ended the concert by exiting through a door. Such raw and sentimental detail made me realize just how strong Yoongi is. From being chained to the past memories to bravely opening a door to move forward :(

[Edit: See kabazinga's comment below for better details.] The "accident he couldn't mention" is shown in the music video. In 2012 when the BTS members were still just trainees, Yoongi was doing bike deliveries on the side to make ends meet. He was hit by a car, almost run over, and his shoulder was injured terribly (torn labrum). If I remember correctly, Yoongi couldn't afford to have the injury treated and he was worried that if he told the company about it, they would cut him from the team. (Big Hit was just a small company back then.) When the company found out they offered to help. He finally received the surgery he needed in November of 2020. 💜

I remember when I first watched the MV it was so tough to visualise all the pain he went through over the years. We all knew about his shoulder injury but the fact that he had to put off the surgery for 8 years due to his schedules and other reasons made it even more heartbreaking. The MV shows how much he fought mentally with all his personal and family issues but he is a champion for winning at the end and overcoming most of his traumas through his music and creations. I really hope he feels at peace now. And the fact that this MV has lesser views might be because it was the 3rd MV from the album and this video has viewers discretion cause of the self harming scenes. It is also tough for us to rewatch the MV and see him go through such pain.

Amygdala is the part of the brain that stocks our memory, in this song, the room is that part of him The trilogy is just parts of him dying and being killed. Even tho the others were “supposed to die”, like the emperor who terrorised people (his fame) and the police officer (who was like shackles to him). But this last one, it’s an accidental death. He tried to save himself from his amygdala (that contained all his memory, his past suic*dal thoughts, his accident where he injured his shoulder and couldn’t tell anyone, his mom and dad being sick etc). He tried to save this part of him, before it would turn into something he couldn’t control. But he couldn’t. Sometimes I feel like the emperor agust d and the police officer (in Haegeum) are just what remains of his hurt self.

True - it's emotionally intense, and not something you can "happily" listen to on a loop. The MV also has a trigger warning at the start, so that probably limits many viewers. I had it on a KZread playlist once but it would "interrupt" the playlist because the trigger warning paused the video and you'd have to click through it every time. Such a hard-hitting but beautiful song, though - the instrumentation is also great/one of my favorites.

His latest album (D-Day) is honestly a no skip album for me, Polar Night and Snooze are incredible but I could listen to any track on repeat all day. I haven't seen anyone mention the almonds. So! Here I go! "Amygdala" comes from the Greek word " ἀμυγδαλή " meaning "almond", as the amygdalae resemble almonds. During this MV we see Yoongi (Suga / AGUST D) constantly eat almonds during the video. For this, I will reference the book Almond by Sohn Wonpyung (a fantastic book, mind you, I recommend it to everyone who hasn't read it). In Almond, our MC Yunjae was born with Alexithymia, a condition where a person is born with underdeveloped amygdalae and therefore have trouble recognizing, naming, and/or describing their own emotions. Yunjae's mother concerned over her son's inability to "feel" things always had almonds on the table during every meal and would make him eat them. I'll quote an excerpt from the book after Yunjae describes his ritual for eating almonds (he had to make it especial because he didn't like them): "The reason I bother going through this ritual is not because I like almonds. At every meal of the day, there were almonds on the table. There was no way of getting around them. So I just made up a way to eat them. Mom thought that if I ate a lot of almonds, the almonds inside my head would get bigger. It was one of the very few hopes she clung to. Everybody has two almonds inside their head, stuck firmly on somewhere between the back of your ears and the back of your skull. In fact, they're called "amygdalae," derived from the Latin word for almond because their size and shape are exactly like one. When you get stimulated by something outside your body, these almonds send signals into your brain. Depending on the type of stimulation, you'll feel fear or anger, joy or sorrow. But for some reason, my almonds don't seem to work well. They don't really light up when they are stimulated. So I don't know why people laugh or cry. Joy, sorrow, love, fear-all these things are vague ideas to me. The words "emotion" and "empathy" are just meaningless letters in print." Now that we know this, in the MV we see almonds and pills being mirrored. We know Yoongi suffers from depression, and we know he's been to a psychiatrist. When you are depressed, or have any disorders, and your brain isn't working like it's supposed to, you get prescribed medication to try and manufacture the response your brain should be creating. I think the almonds and pills are nudging at that. Yoongi had to take medication to try and make his brain function normally. I don't think this says he abused pills or anything like that. He'd take his "almonds" daily in the hope of "fixing" his problem, hoping that one day, he would stop feeling things too much or too little. Again, this is my interpretation of what it means. Yoongi's music always hits me the hardest out of all of BTS. He's the one I connect to the most. I think you should react to Agust D - The Last (lyric video + live performance).

A few other song recs by him that I would love to see your reaction to (no MVs but the 3rd one has a live perf): So Far Away (featuring a truly epic guitar solo) Dear My Friend (honest raw lyrics about his past) Snooze (my absolute fave, it's so powerful and the instrumentals are out of this world) People (one of the first times he showcased his angelic singing voice) Side note that he performed some of these on his tour last year and on the final concert day he was incredibly emotional and ended up crying through some of the more emotional songs (dear my friend, snooze and amygdala if I remember correctly). It really shows how deep he goes with his music and how real it all is for him.

I heard the song first and read the lyrics and they were heartbreaking, but I remember when I saw him on that scooter in the video, I had to stop it and breath through it for a moment, because I knew that part was about his accident. I think my heart really broke for him when I heard The Last for the first time. Another reason it doesn’t have more views is that it’s “age restricted” and has a “viewer warning” attached (self harm, etc). I love that you make the effort to try to understand... most reactors not knowing what an amygdala is don't stop and google it and it's so frustrating! The song has so much meaning when you understand what he's saying. Knowing his history (his accident, pain, mental health issues), I think every ARMY cried after seeing this video. It's one of my favorites of his, but is very bittersweet to listen to. I'd recommend Snooze next from Agust D... it's his way of telling younger artists that it's a hard road, but he'll be their support since he didn't have that when he was younger. It features Woosung of The Rose, an amazing Korean rock band and Woosung's voice is hauntingly perfect in that song (also watch Back to Me by The Rose - just amazing - as a rock fan, you may love it!)

Out of the 3 songs in the trilogy, "Amygdala" is my most favourite, 'cos even though it's not a loud song like the other 2 were, and it doesn't have a heavy beat like the other 2, it hits me the hardest in its own quieter way. There's like an eerie calm to this song that pierces straight through to my heart and breaks it into 2, with intensely personal autobiographical lyrics, and that kind of internal emotional pain that I could relate to. From what I understand, Yoongi's Mum had cardiac problems and the ticking of her heart refers to the pacemaker she has. Yoongi's motorcycle accident is something that happened when he was just starting out as a trainee in BTS and he didn't dare to tell the company, in case they would ask him to leave, so he put up with it all these years, and only got it fixed recently, like around the time the BE album came out, if I remember correctly. Anyways, if I got it wrong, I'm sure someone else here will get it right. If you think the music video is great (and it is), you should see him perform this live during his D-Day Concert Tour. There were a few songs that really get to him during this tour, "Amygdala" is one of them, the other is "Snooze", and yet another is "Dear My Friend". Suga aka Agust D tends to have really raw and personal lyrics in his songs, and they all hit hard in one way or another, but those songs have helped so many ARMYs, and so many people find themselves relating to him and feeling closer to him. Those songs are his healing and ours. The door that he can't seem to walk through in the "Amygdala" music video... he finally gets to walk through it and closes the door behind him onstage at the end of his D-Day concert. With BTS, things don't end with the song or the music video, the BTS world extends through their concerts and live performances at award shows and so on. It's hard NOT to want to explore everything once you start really getting into them.

He actually has a lot of really personal songs. If you thought this one was heavy you should listen to his song The Last. No music video but there are many lyric videos on KZread. Also his song snooze from the same album as Amygdala is beautiful and addresses younger Kpop idols, talking about his journey and telling them how to cope with the things he had to go through. It has a beautiful fan made music video.

I’m 52-year-old ARMY, I am OT7, but Yoongi is a very important member for me through experiences. Every time I watch this music video, I cry because I sympathize with Yoongi and find myself in the lyrics. Many ARMYs feel this way. There is also the song Agust D Ft. Ryuichi Sakamoto & WOOSUNG 'Snooze' - which for me is a continuation of the trilogy - which you should see. There is no official MV, it is part of a documentary film about the creation of the album. It is one of the last compositions by the late Ryuichi Sakamoto, with singing by Woosung (from the excellent band The Rose - it's worth reacting to them in K-pop). Thank you for your reactions - they bring me great joy.

From the moment I've seen the track name revealed I knew that this was going to be one of my favourite songs ever. I've used the name amygdala as a pseudonym before, ever since I learned about it in biology class (my name's Magda, which means the one from Magdala - I couldn't ignore the similarity of the two words). I've allocated it pretty much the same meaning Yoongi does in his lyrics. My grandma commited suicide, my father's got depressed and went into a clinic, my mother's got breast cancer and during that whole time I've been bullied at school - out of fear of making the situation at home worse I barely talked about the bullying to my parents. Once graduated, I realised I'd forgotten about literally all of my primary and middle school time. Amygdala's not become one of my favourite but my favourite song of all time, having by far the most relatable lyrics I've come to hear. I am extremely impressed by Yoongi, writing all of this down and then sharing it with the whole world - that takes so much strength and vulnerability. With that in mind the song touches me even more deeply.

Yoongi has always shared his inner turmoil regarding his insecurities and phobias - so that other people can relate and how he handled it. I guess this is why we call him Grandpa Suga sometimes, he’s the second to the eldest in the group and there are times he is closed off, but he really cares for the members and does not express it in words as much. The members have fully accepted the way he is and love him whenever he does show his affection towards them.

Hello, Yoongi, since he started in music, he didn't count on the help of his parents, just his brother, so he came from his city to Seoul to clear a path alone in rap, but in the process he passed a lot of needs, trying to do several jobs among those deliverymen and one day he has an accident injuring his shoulder, When I can't stand it, I communicate to the company and there is support, and they did many treatments but they reduced the pain but they didn't take it away, (hence the pills in the video ) until November 2020 when finally with the best orthopedists in Korea operate it, so it was absent from the group for 3 months. In the video where you see someone thinking of doing damage with an exact face, it's to make his scar from Daechwita, which reflects everything he's been through to be the artist he is today. He says that the trilogy of these ends because he has already healed his heart, so in the video he does not open the door at the end, but on his tour before entering the Military Service at his last concert he says goodbye and weeps because he has freed himself from all his fears and depression. ( I recommend you see it )

I’ve seen others mention it but him walking through the door on his own at the end of the tour and waving at us was one of the most emotional moments I’ve ever had watching a performance. Yoongi is such a wonderful songwriter and he really does share so much of himself. His openness about his mental health struggles has been so helpful to me with my own. I am forever grateful to get to be ARMY. It doesn’t have a video but he has a song called People that I really resonate with. After you watch the guide and see where he came from I would recommend watching his AgustD video. Is it cathartic to watch him stand up for himself after seeing how they were treated.

Yoongi has said that we scar ourselves, by how we allow moments in our lives to affect us. The scar represents the things that had a negative impact on him and the way that the scar heals through Daechwita and Haegeum represents Yoongi healing as time passes. The first two songs also represent Yoongi ending negative aspects of his personality, the mad tyrant of a king, and the corrupt mob boss who was so fixated on money. The last Yoongi was just a simple man, eating noodles in a noodle shop but without the scar.

I always think I'm not gonna cry when I see people react to this and yet I always do. Yoongi had his shoulder crushed in a car accident around debut and initially hid it from the company. In kpop, historically, talent have been treated like replaceable cattle and he was terrified he would be let go as damaged goods. When the company found out, they were horrified and took him to the hospital. By then, significant damage had set in. (Big Hit also took care of his education bills, which was the only reason he was working the delivery job that caused the injury.) Yoongi was then worried because they were literally just starting BTS's debut and had to hit the ground running with all the promotion, etc. He chose to deal with the injury through pain management FOR YEARS -- through all that choreography and all that running around. BTS didn't have a break for six years. Literally. And it wasn't until 2020, during lockdown, that he finally had surgery. And the other things -- his mom's health and his dad's cancer diagnosis, not the mention all the thing he hasn't shared -- were just piling up on him while BTS was going through the extreme vitriol and hardships of their earlier years.

I connect and love all 7 members but there was such a deep connection that formed within me about yoongi. The way he was so raw and open about his struggles in life made me feel like I wasn't alone. When amygdala came out, I cried so hard. It felt lIke I haven't had that good of a cry in years. One I felt sad yet proud of yoongi but on the other hand, it was like this song unleashed all the struggles I faced myself before I met BTS. For your question about why it only has 12 million views, I think it is a combination of things. Because KZread put a content warning for self-harm on it, it limits its visibility in the KZread algorithm. Also, many ARMY although we love this song deeply, also have difficulty watching it. It is triggering for some people. For others the reminder of everything Yoongi has been through is just difficult. This song is why I will always call Yoongi our Lotus Flower, though. The first time I watched this, I cried. I cry every time I watch it because of his honest portrayal of his past struggles with his own mental health, and how he came through the experiences to eventually come out stronger. The fact that he was sharing such personal facts about his life and experiences with such candor is such a gift from him as he feels it is important to address the stigma of mental health, and how it is such a hidden crisis for so many people because they fear being shamed, shunned and/or abused by others for opening up about it. Kudos to him for being such a strong advocate for mental health care and recognition of the needs to bring it out in the open to help others, but for also being such an amazing and talented musician/ story teller that he can produce such a MV that has such a strong impact on those who view it. I can’t say I have a favorite because I love all 3 songs for different reasons. I was cried through this entire song. I could relate to it because I went through very similar situations through my life including wanting to end things. As he was crawling up (internal fight to live) to get to the door, I had a flash back of me doing the same thing myself. It took me many years to get through the door 🚪and leave all the bad memories behind and not look back. On the very last day of his D-Day concert tour he closed the show by actually going through the door. Again I cried because I was so happy for him. He finally got to the other side. South Korea has one of the highest unaliving rates in the world. There is so much pressure on their youth. I think he wrote this song not only for himself but to show everyone they are not alone and it’s not easy. But don’t give up, you can get through the door too. I wish for more of the youth around the world struggling to keep fighting. It does get better. 🥺

When this vid 1st hit. Millions of us (Army/Globally) stayed up to watch it's debut.. Diff time lines .Me on my tiny Carribean Island - 4m my time. Yes to all comments below. Suga's vid/lyrics were autobiographical and even I as an Army Mom (56 yrs old) since 2016 knew the details of his 'accident'....but zero knowledge of his Mum's heart surgery etc. Knew he'd kept his painful shoulder injury a secret from Big Hit back then. Once this vid went MAIN STREAM? Next day. Shit went South. REAL QUICK. Hit many HARD. Knew his addiction to pain meds (back then)...had mentioned it (subtly) in vids since then. But "I don't know your name".........Suga KNEW WHAT HE WAS DOING. Millions interpreted it to mean "WE HAVE ALL SURVIVED TRAUMA IN OUR LIVES - NOT JUST ME - Here is how I dealt with it". Shit - this song brought up memories at 14 yrs old....when I came near to being R-word and killed on an isolated beach in the Islands but I survived. Well Suga? I saw (no exaggeration) .....MANY/Globally....who in sharing 'your trauma back then/vid? Made them...relive theirs. So much so........Psychiatrists/Psychologists were STEPPING IN....and putting out 'Statements - literally entering Army's YT chats to 'offer advice". And were 'On Call'...if needed. Back then. ....... For example. Just ( ONE out of many in my YT Community) A beautiful 24 old University Student ('Murican) on the cusp to graduate. BTS fan. Decided to (casually) react to Suga's 'Amygdala' . Once he HIT THAT CAR?! Made her literally throw up. Turns out - she'd been in a major car accident - killed her parents..only survivor. Miracle - she survived. Was in a coma for weeks. Buried not only her parents.....but her memories/trauma........... DEEP. She lost it. Not that religious but prayed she and many who 1st saw this vid...weren't as 'triggered'. Reacting to it today? Old news. But back then? Knowing that Suga suffered DEEP Depression (for yrs).....and he got ZERO SUPPORT from his parents (upon joining BTS). And still continues to suffer? Am no Doctor. Guessing he suffers from 'Chronic Depression'....will be on meds til the day he passes. Once regulated. All good. Point is: BTS has the largest Fan base, Globally. And this song? Hit HARD back then 💜💜

The amygdala is where the brain stores some memories, particularly those that have deep emotional impact. One of the two in one's brain tends to store negative emotional memories and one more happier ones. One key element of the amygdala, however, is it triggers responses based on past traumas, notably the flight or flight response which ACTIVELY short-circuits rational thought while it perceives a crisis (which may exist for just be a response to the past trauma).
