For some brief context, the beginning when the Warrior of Light (the guy in the trailer is a stand in for your player character) fights against the guy in armor is the ending of the last expansion, Stormblood, where there was a massive fight of all the nations of the continent fighting against the conquesting empire. But while all that was happening, your companions were starting to suddenly collapse one by one, their consciousness suddenly leaving their bodies. It turns out they were summoned to another world, a world that has been flooded completely by an overabundance of light (light and darkness are sort of forces of nature in 14 and have power) and is on the brink of a calamity. In 14, multiple worlds exist and are connected to each other, so if a calamity happens in this world then the world you're from will face one as well. So, Shadowbringers is about you traveling to this other world to save your friends and prevent this calamity from happening, becoming the Warrior of Darkness in this world to restore balance.

A little bit more context. That small creature speaking to the warrior of light is an imp. They are a garden variety enemy that you see through much of the game and they normally don't talk so he could be hallucinating or this one is special. The angel looking thing that comes down, you wouldn't know what it is at this point. But it is definitely meant to look like an angel. You are able to change class, or jobs as they are known in Final Fantasy, at will like that, but you can't actually do it during a battle. And I personally never caught the reference to fat cats in the Eulmore Castle scene because that is a playable race, but you are 100% right about the rich living it up while the world burns.

Shadowbringers marked a turning point in the series. The supporting cast truly felt like an adventuring party. A group of strangers in a strange land rising to become the only spots of shade in burning light.

It also introduced the Trust system. So you could literally build parties with your npc companions and run dungeons with them, level them up and stuff. Makes for good replay value I think.

The best parts about FFXIV cinematics is that you're part of them. And you experience those moments as you play.

The free trial for XIV gives you unlimited access to the base game and the first two expansions (hundreds of hours of content) for free. It's easily one of the best stories ever told. Even the older content is kept relevant, and it has a very active player base. Unlike other MMORPGs, this one is focused more on the journey than the destination. If you have the time, I highly recommend.

The voice acting in this game has gone from "terrible" to "incredible." Apparently there was no voice director or additional takes in the initial rush to make the 2.0 "A Realm Reborn" do-over. In Heavensward, they recast everyone with a UK-based team, and by Shadowbringers, the whole team is absolutely nailing the delivery. There are a lot of lines delivered in this expansion that still bring tears to my eyes when I hear them.

what he saw in the beginning were flashbacks from his past (aka all the other expansions you played before!)

One detail that isn't obvious unless you've been a fan of the series: The Jobs/classes the WoL (warrior of light) switch between while fighting the "angel" are all the jobs from past trailers in order. Archer1.0, warrior 2.0, Dragoon 3.0, Monk & Samurai for 4.0, and Shadowbringers 5.0 Dark Knight.

Also in the trailer it shows the new jobs for the Shadowbringer expansion, Machinist (The guy with the gun blade protecting the young woman Minfilia.) And Dancer-the woman dancing in the marketplace. The flashbacks you are seeign in this trailer are the Warrior of Lights past experiences in the previous expansions. I have to say that Square Enix has some of the most impressive expansion cinematics, and this is coming from an old school World of Warcraft player!

Also have not played as much as I would like due to RL events (losing both parents to cancer and finding and eventually buying and currently painting & updating my home)

that song during the final boss fight of that expac was one of the greatest experiences ive had in a game.

This game brings me so much pain yet so much joy. The story is a masterpiece.

I recently found out I have over 11,000 hours in final fantasy 14, played it since beta 1.0 and have to say shadowbringers is my favourite expansion so far, the story, cutscenes, side content all pretty amazing 👍🏻

Definitely watch the other trailers for this game if you liked this one! There's Flames of Truth, Heavensward, Stormblood, Endwalker and now Dawntrail. Shadowbringers is the 3rd expansion

I'd watch the other ARR version of the cinematic first, since Flames of Truth is the third version of that cinematic with an alternate ending. That one had a version that played at the end of 1.0 (End of an Era), an extended version from the start of ARR(A New Beginning), and then the one that plays at the end of post patch ARR(Flames of Truth).

I love watching non FF fans see the trailers for 14, they really are some of the best cinematics in gaming and they always give you a good taste of what's coming. Apart from the job-swapping the Warrior shows in this trailer, nothing happens in them that doesn't happen in game one way or another.

I'm glad that this trailer piqued your interest! With that said, however, this is for the 3rd expansion. Each expansion is pretty much a standalone game story within a far-reaching story arc. You would have to play the previous expansions first, starting with 2.0 A Realm Reborn (the base game, which is a 1-in-a-million successful remake of the 1.0 title that utterly failed), 2.0 Heavensward (which was award winning at the time), 3.0 Stormblood, 4.0 Shadowbringers, with 5.0 Endwalker being the latest completed expansion and the ending chapter of the story arc started in ARR. 6.0 Dawntrail will be releasing this year. There is a free trial (with limitations such as not being able to add other players to your friendlist, no access to the in-game marketboard, etc.) that has been expanded to include not only Heavensward but now Stormblood, as well. If you do decide to give it a try, my advice is to remember to take your time to enjoy the -journey-, enjoy the story, and immerse yourself in the world. Rushing to what is currently end-game content will seriously hurt your enjoyment. Especially with a decade's worth of game to go through. ARR is 10 years old at this point, and is still very good, but does date itself. It'll be jarring to start back in late 2000s style MMORPGs if you're used to current day RPG style games. But you quickly get used to it, and it modernizes as you play through the expansions.

Just so you know, ARR, the BASE game is a bit of a SLOG to get through, but it's well worth it because it's ALL of the WORLD BUILDING. It gets you familiar with the land of Eorzea, Her people, and Her Enemies. AND! If you pre-order Dawntrail (when it comes up for preorder soon) you'll be able to make characters from races not in the Base game. Au Ra, Hrothgar, and Viera. Female Hrothgar are being added when Dawntrail drops, and we're all super excited for it.

This is one of the two best trailers for people who might play the game. I'd also recommend the ARR trailer as well. If you are going to play the game I would suggest waiting on most of the other trailers until the appropriate point in the story because some of them would be quite spoilery to you. Heavansward completely replays the dramatic ending of ARR for example.

Every final fantasy story handles a little different and tells a different story. You can start anywhere you want, but for newcomers I tend to reccomend the remaster collection if you like turn based or deep character focused narrative - and the other titles for action oriented quick thinking on the spot style of gameplay with world building put to the front

The big deal with Shadowbringers is, dass Light is the force that needs to be stopped. Darkness is the "good" side in this one. What happens if the forces of light completely overwhelm the darkness? This shows, that Light and Darkness are not equivalent to good and bad.

It is a very pretty trailer and Creative Business Unit 3 is very good at making them. The later ones are, however, not really geared to new players other than the cinematic extravaganza in them... You don't know who these people are you should be caring for... The namedrops do not mean a thing...

I don't want to say spoilers but I absolutely cannot stand the "but what if dark was GOOD" trope. So many games and books do it, and it's awful. At least this one is between two good expansions. All the storylines tie together so it's really cool.

This expansion isn’t about “what if dark was good” though. It’s meant to show that dark isn’t evil, but a part of nature. Light and dark are to halves of the same coin. One isn’t more evil or good than the other.
