Yeah basically the first cinematic tells the story of how the garlean empire tried to fly over Silvertears Falls I believe its called in Mor Dhona to directly invade Eorzean. But They stirred the dragons that rested there and the biggest of them all Midgardsormr who is the ancestor of the dragons of the world resided there. He burst forth from the lake with his host of dragons to engage with the titanic garlean airship Agrias. Towards the end you can see Midgardsormr managed to take it down into the lake, but the engines spurred and caused a super gigantic explosion which took him out as well. In-game you can see his body still wrapped around the ruined ship in the lake in the zone of Mor Dhona.

So, that second trailer with the moon falling from the sky? That's got some history behind it. Basically, ff14 version 1.0 was absolute garbage and everyone knew it. So the devs basically said, screw it, it's so broken we can't fix it, so let's tear it down and rebuild it from the ground up. And not only did they do that, but they made it into an event in the game itself. The moon falling was an actual apocalypse that happened and is referenced in the game even today, and when that cutscene played in-game, servers went offline immediately afterward. Then they worked their asses off to remake it better, and they relaunched the game as FF14: A Realm Reborn, and the rest is history. THEY MADE THE SERVERS ENDING INTO A CANON GAME EVENT. I love FF14 so much.

The first trailer was the disastrous 1.0 launch. Flames of Truth + A New Beginning are 2.0, aka A Realm Reborn. Flames of Truth is actually a cut-scene for ARR's end-game raid series that tells the truth of the aftermath of Bahamut. The 'dragoon stance' is a reference to IV. Heavensward has HEAVY inspiration from IV in alot of places, and dragoon's style is heavily inspired from IV's Kain. XVI was a twinkle in Yoshi-P's eye at this point (I'm pretty sure XV was in development at this time?) The Warrior of Light (aka the WoL or Meteor survivor) is a good guy, and is your character. Stormblood is told in two parts: one is slightly Indian/Western influenced while the other is mostly FFXIV in Japan. The second half is the best story-wise by a wide margin. Stormblood's trailer is also pretty much a 'where your going' trailer for us who were caught up. The two regions (Ala Mhigo and Doma) had been heavily references since 1.0, but FINALLY we were going there. Shadowbringers + Endwalker are big story focused trailers. There's some levels of spoilers here, but you lack context, so alls good. Soken had taken musical control in Stormblood, but Shadowbringers is where he began to SHINE like an absolute KING. The timing for the 'valkyrie's attack and the dark knight counter attack with "We fall!" from the music sends chills up my spine even today. Endwalker's trailer's song, Footfalls, uses tracks from ARR, Heavensward, Stormblood, and Shadowbringers. Like its expansion, it is a celebration of the long journey we've been on.

  • @MetaSF_

    @MetaSF_

XV had to been in dev time I'd imagine. And yea Stormblood definitely felt like it had a super different inspiration, Western I got but not the indian part, it looked more chinese but not like I know the game's intentions yet lol. As much as Heavensward felt like an obvious tone shift, I felt what you mean about Soken's musical showcase with Shadowbringers, that one felt DIFFERENT

  • @devonm042690

@@MetaSF_ Just to clarify what OP said about Flames of Truth, the only part of it that was new for any first-timers to that raid is what comes after the old wizard magicked everyone else away. Everything up to that was played for every player of 1.0 who was active when the server went down, as a dramatic sendoff to that dumpster fire, and then later when ARR (2.0) launched in its place, that cutscene was a part of the opening cinematic, being immediately followed by the A New Beginning cutscene. So when you start up the game you see this big battle that's interrupted by big daddy Bahamut, and everything going to shit, and then after the old wizard sacrifices himself to get everyone else out there's a fade to black and then you get the Square Enix logo leading into the more hopeful part that is A New Beginning.

So, a bit of everything here. Other people have probably covered most of this by now, but I don't quite wanna comb through all the comments to find out. 1.0 Trailer: The beginning. Main big fight with the dragon, I did see a comment covering this; the battle over Silvertear where Midgardsormr takes down the Agrias. This glimpse into the past takes place 15 years before the actual events of 1.0, and delayed Garlemald's invasion of Eorzea, the main continent where most of the game takes place. From what I understand, this event is also responsible for Eorzea being a land so monstrously rich in Aether (the essence of magic, which also fuels life itself). This is also where the Summons come in; the amount of Aether required to summon them properly is so enormous, that to do so was impossibly rare... but after the battle of Silvertear Skies... the Beast Tribes of Eorzea, in their conflict with the various nations around them, began to summon them (which they worship as their gods) with dangerous frequency. This is where summons like Ifrit and Titan come in. A Realm Reborn + Flames of Truth: This is actually two cinematics; the fade to white where it seems like the guy is dying is where the original cinematic ends. When they shut down the game servers to rebuild the game as A Realm Reborn, the story that would culminate in this first cinematic was played out over several patches, and said cinematic played in-game at the moment the servers shut down. A Garlean Legatus (basically general) named Nael Van Darnus conspired to bring down the Red Moon Dalamud (revealed to be an artificial construct by the obligatory Hyper-Advanced Ancient Civilization), to obliterate Eorzea entirely. Problem is, Nael Van Darnus has actually been brainwashed and now *worships* Dalamud. This is because Dalamud is a prison for big angry dragon Bahamut. Players killed Nael in 1.0, but it didn't stop Dalamud's descent. The guy in armor watching the war from another airship is another Legatus, Gaius Van Baelsar, who provided the players with information to oppose Nael, because he wanted to Conquer, not obliterate. The Flames of Truth trailer was actually hidden near the end of the "Coils of Bahamut" raid in the 2.0 patches; canonically, no one knows what actually happened after that fade to white, and even the people who were THERE don't remember, and they don't even remember what the Warriors of Light (see: player characters) looked like, or their names. It's where the name came from; when they try to imagine them, all they can see in their mind is vague silhouettes against a brilliant white background. Though, player characters end up being referred to as the Warrior(s) of Light, regardless of whether or not they are from 1.0 or not; Legacy characters get a unique starting cinematic upon logging into the character, and a few unique cutscenes to reflect that they are the same character from 5 years prior, and that they ARE the fabled Warrior of Light that everyone cannot remember, new characters are simply new characters, but they all end up being Eorzea's Warrior of Light. "A New Beginning" trailer is actually tacked onto the end of the A Realm Reborn trailer with Bahamut, and together these two form the proper full "A Realm Reborn" cinematic. This shows the player characters reappearing after being teleported away (more like teleported through time) by Louisoix, the badass spellcaster guy in the A Realm Reborn trailer who kicked Bahamut's ass. In 1.0, he was a prominent questgiver and one of the "Big Good" characters, dedicated to fighting the good fight. This portion of the cinematic takes place 5 years after the disastrous emergence of Bahamut, referred to in-universe as the Seventh Umbral Calamity, or simply The Calamity. Dark Knight on the dark horse is Odin. Past this point, it gets into trailers for expansions, which starts assuming knowledge of what's been going on in the story leading up to said expansion, and teasing what happens in the expansion more than outright telling stories in the actual trailer. EDIT: You figured out that it's the same main character all the way through, but despite the similarities, silver-haired elfman in the Shadowbringers trailer is not the same guy from the 1.0 trailer. He's someone else that you'll have met long ago by the time you reach Shadowbringers. The Warrior of Darkness bit during Shadowbringers is a unique situation - most of the time, YOU are the Warrior of Light.

Since the 1.0 story is no longer playable we are to imagine he has traversed through many localities and has performed so many heroic deeds for the people of that continent, only to stay frozen in disbelief knowing he is helpless to do anything at this point. Alright, to clarify since you seem to have a lot of preconceived notions about the Warrior of Light that do *not* apply to this game: Every mainline Final Fantasy game takes place in a different world/universe. So the Warrior of Light in the original Final Fantasy and Stranger of Paradise, is not the same as the WoL from 14. The WoL that appears in every trailer is a stand-in for the player character. When you play through 14’s story, the character you made is the Warrior of Light. And they are distinctly *not* a villain. The story of Shadowbringers revolves around another world where Light has consumed everything, and Light becomes the “villain” of that expansion. You become the “Warrior of Darkness” in that world (which is actually being used as a hero’s title), as your job is to restore balance by bringing Darkness back. Hence the name “Shadowbringers” This might also be why you thought the Warrior of Light was actually evil, you might have heard bits and pieces about this concept from Shadowbringers from other 14 players. Hope all this made sense

Your personality seems tailor-made to enjoy FFXIV's story. My advice is to take your time. Don't try to rush to endgame. Enjoy your journey. It's okay to deviate from the main scenario quest (MSQ) when one of FFXIV many other features catches your attention. Also, save side quests so you can level another job with them. You don't need to do them to understand the MSQ and the MSQ will give you enough experience to level up your first job. Most of all, have fun! You only get experience the MSQ for the first time once.

Havent seen anyone mention it yet, and you may already know, but those card things in the 1.0 trailer were levequests. Basically, lorewise, they were somewhat random (random on which ones were available, not the actual quest itself) repeatable quests. The design on the levequest was supposed to depict the type of quest. Levequests are still in the game today, but are not nearly as used as they were in 1.0, mainly because they were one of the only forms of content 1.0 was launched with.

It's so cool how you caught a bunch of references to FF tropes and previous entries that I now have to rave about the tiny missed details that haven't been mentioned in the comments. Please excuse the wall of text. First of all, you've already noticed how well these trailers are at drawing in newcomers, but the other side of it is how they manage to impress returning players. I'll try to sum it up without spoilers. A Realm Reborn trailer had to pull in FF fans in general, since the few people who managed to suffer through XIV 1.0 were most assuredly returning for the relaunch. That's why on top of the direct continuation of 1.0's ending cinematic and the promise of a bright new adventure, you get to see Odin as people have pointed out already, but also Behemoth in his usual muscle beast form and right after it, the Crystal Tower right out of FFIII. Also hey, the praying catgirl from the Flames of Truth returns and is seen sniffing a flower in a port city! As is the praying pair of a tiny mage and a masked girl, this time in a glade in the middle of a forest. And the praying eboy (Squall's cousin) from the same segment is seen at a place of worship again. You get to reunite with old friends (applies to seasoned 1.0 players only; additional rewards provided on account creation). Heavensward hooks returning players right away with a compressed summary of the end of ARR and then exposes a place that people immediately recognise without having ever seen it up close. Dragons, dragoons, elves and a castle in the clouds? 1.0 players didn't have to play ARR to understand where the story would go, and the keener eyed ARR players were able to spot a strong returning character for a few frames. Also, our boy Cid returns from the Flames of Truth trailer, and note how he's grown as well over the years. This is XIV's strong suit: characters go through changes, not just us. Stormblood trailer, once again, shows mainly the locations, and once again they're easy to pick up. An ARR player will easily understand what the desert oasis with lightly dressed people and monk fistfighting is, and the eastern regions are referenced so much it's hardly possible to miss them. And we get a peek of two established characters at the end being very much in the right place. Shadowbringers' trailer is fantastic and has a story in it, mirroring the writing changes that happened in it. Its main theme is an unsettling feeling of things being wrong. Like Heavensward's, it starts with a recap of the very end of the previous expansion, but right after that John Finalfantasy encounters a trash talk gremlin and fights a valkyrie or angel in a washed-out white and yellow environment. Now, players who have been to specific side content knew that similar creatures and conditions exist in the game's universe, but either not here or not now in relation to the game's story. The bearded elf is an old friend but his getup is all new. The catgirl is the very same as in the ARR trailer but her name doesn't match. The eboy from ARR has turned into an edaddy with how he's now doing a disney princess rescue, and the princess herself is straight up impossible. Remember how the Crystal Tower at the end of the ARR trailer was in the middle of nowhere? Now there's a bustling town at its doors, and what's going on inside is also wrong. As a fun side observation, you noticed how John Finalfantasy recollects all trailers, but notice how throughout the fight with the valkyrie he also changes his weapons in the exact order he changed them in the trailers. And then Endwalker's trailer is the definition of tying a decade's worth of storytelling together. It's even in the music, as people have pointed out. The ancient Greek looking city doesn't even need words on the map for the player to know what it is because it's been a vital offscreen part of the game's story for its entirety. All the warriors we've been fighting shoulder to shoulder with make their appearances. It's a majestic capstone to most of the game's story from 1.0 onward and it shamelessly advertises itself as such. Also, you noted how the trailer felt hopeful amid the chaos. The lyrics that kick in during the white stone city part of the trailer are "our song of hope, she dances on the wind, higher, oh higher". Oh, and the narrator's voice made some people lose their minds while others didn't want to believe. The amount of thought that goes into these trailers is admirable.

Wonderful comment, glad I was able to make people happy by catching even a good amount of small things, I thank my Kingdom Hearts experience for the detail noticing lol. But I love how you broke down each trailer's focus and intentions for both plot and players, it makes a lot of sense and you can clearly see the care and attention put into the creation of this game. Makes me realize how this game blew up and came to have such a strong backing these past 5+ years. And me, I LOVE analyzing these things and especially stories of games like this well, cant wait to get to stream my first time journey of FFXIV 😤

Also, Endwalker is the end of the current arc that started back in 1.0. The new expansion coming next year, Dawntrail, will be the start of a new story. The character continuity of the side characters extends from 2.0 through 6.0, the current Endwalker. So you have time to catch up, but you'll be looking at hundreds of hours to get through all of the story, unless you skip, which I don't recommend if you want to understand what's going on. One thing to keep in mind about FFXIV's story is that story beats and characters from 2.0 have relevence throughout the story in various expansion, including Endwalker. And side content has a minor effect on the end scenes of Endwalker, so I do recommend you try and do major side raids between each expansion.

Some points I want to add: (Im a huge FF fan so this will be a bit of a ramble) 1. Stranger of Paradise is definitely tying in the multiverse of all FFs, for example, the pirate grotto, the second dungeon, was created by the Lufenians based off of what they saw in Dimension 14, aka FFXIV, specifically the first dungeon of 14, Sastasha. (And assuming you finished Strangers of Paradise, they also are tying in the FF Dissidia universe which I am a huge fan of!) 2. The guy with goggles is the Cid of 14, and you will notice a lot more references to other FFs besides this one. 14 is like a melting pot for all the FFs. 3. The brown haired guy in all the trailers represents the player character, and their growth through each expansion, but that Skyrim looking version of him? That guy is an important character you will meet. 4. Soken did arrange and compose most the trailer themes but I think the first 2 (1.0, Realm Reborn) were done by Nobuo Uematsu, the Legend who created Sephiroths theme, and the majority of the other FF osts. 5. We are the Warrior of Light in this one, and some say this, some don’t, each main character in each FF is basically “the Warrior of Light” as well as their party which is while you’ll hear “The Warrior’s of Light” (Neon even says this in Strangers of Paradise) but this is the first time since FF1 that we, the player, has been labeled as the Warrior of Light by the NPCs. 6. The squad you saw in the first 2 trailers are important characters, but in those moments they represented the players friends, and they only appear in those two trailers, anyone else you saw after that resembled them, is not them. 7. You misread the text in the Heavensward opening, it said the Warriors of Light have delivered the world FROM destruction. We are definitely spilling blood but all for the greater good of course, and Shadowbringers is where we do need to balance things out by becoming the Warrior of Darkness, but I’ll let you find out what exactly we’re balancing. #Shadowbringers

Its hard to see the throughline of the traliers viewed by themselves. The 1.0 trailer is for a prior version of the game, which was remade into 2.0, a realm reborn. So the connective tissue between that first trailer and those that came after is tenuous. So don't focus too much on that. But the main short, dark haired fellow is basically a stand in for the player character. As we are all the Warrior of Light in our playthroughs, which is one of the best parts of this game in my opinion. You are the big hero.

Never played Strangers of Paradise but what I understand from the discussions and such you are basically playing in the world of final fantasy 1 from the perspective of the main villain of that game, so of course you fight the heroes of the game eventually. But yeah they aren't connected with this one specifically. I hope you do play this game, I'm playing it while watching this video actually. Be warned though that it takes its time to cook. Personally I started going "Ok, yeah this story is cooking a bit" by the end of A Realm Reborn, and to me it was all uphill from there. For some what goes immidiately next is a bit of a slog until Heavensward starts (ehhhh... for context, this game is structured like "Base Expansion" then "patches that came out during that expansion's life cycle"(which end up being almost as big as the base expansion) then "next base expansion" and so on. So yeah again, for me I got a bit hooked by the end of the base ARR and liked more the post patches and liked it more and more For some the post patches of ARR are a bit of a slog but it's in Heavensward when the game starts cooking.

Yea it sounds like it takes the usual MMO route, you have the original release then they continue with expansions till the next "Chapter" if you wanna call it that lol. Also Strangers of Paradise is pretty much as you summarize with except you weren't originally the villain then you and the group becomes it so it's almost like a time reset kinda thing. And from what it sounds like and what it looked like when I did this, Heavensward is built different

@@MetaSF_ It does and doesn't. It has expansions like the normal MMO route. But you are hard locked to doing the story to progress through the expansions. You can't just start a new character in the last expansion, you have ~2+ months worth of game before you get there. Depending on how hard you play. There is story skips you can buy, but it is never recommended for this game as how they designed story dungeons and such it helps you learn tons of Mechanics that can become relevant in later expansions, dungeons, and such. I think Story skip is more-so if you make alternate characters for some reason. Edit: to add on, its kind of recommended to not actually buy a subscription until you finish heavensword. Unless you plan on being in a Guild/alliance ("Free Company" in this game) in which case you'll want it. There is quite a few more things locked to free trial players, but as for all story content you can do everything in the base game and first expansion for free.

I am deeply enjoying how very wrong he is, but how close to right he is. Really shows how cohesive a story the trailers tell. As I'm sure plenty have told you, 1.0 ended with the arr trailer up until the older man looking into the light. And the servers went down. Game over. YoshiP did the unthinkable and killed the game. ARR is what returned. Set 5 YEARS after 1.0 and the Calamity that was Bahamut. In the post patches was the first, infamously difficult then easy then difficult then- anyway one of the first Raid sets called the Coils of Bahamut. The Flames of Truth was a cutscene explaining what happened after the screen went dark. Still part of ARR ARR ended with one HELL of, not a twist, but definitely a Collapse of everything the players were feeling. Which lead into Heavensward. So on and so forth. The character that is the stand in for the players is named Meteor. And a couple other names, such as Derplander, [redacted] and [redacted].

Each Final Fantasy has a different story, unless the title indicates a direct continuity, like FFX and FFX-2. The naming, elements, monsters and some locations can be the same to produce fanservice, but there all different settings. The Warrior of Light of XIV is a different one from all others. And yes, the dude from all trailers is the main character. He represents the player. Edit: forget about the companions from the A Realm Reborn trailers. They used to represent a player's party. But with the progression of the story, the game introduced us to a new party: the Scions of the Seventh Dawn. They will be your NPC friends that can send you in missions or fight them with you. The elf with husky voice is called Urianger, he is an Astrologian, a healer that conjures the power from the stars. The cat girl is Y'shtola, and she is a Sorceress, a mix between Black Mage and White Mage to deal tons of damage and heal if necessary. The human in a trenchcoat is Thancred, and he is a Gunbreaker, a Tank class specialized in fast bursts of damage and thick personal defense. There are many others, but these three are often the most prominent.

Also I randomly stumbled on to you channel, if you play 14 will you stream it? Or do like a highlight reel or something? I'd follow it, either way. My son just reinstalled the game and now I'm getting the itch to log back in. I like watching new players experience it to help me remember the details and such. There's no need to go deep into this game but there's no end to how deep you can go if you are so inclined

@@blakec8549 I appreciate the info, and when I play I will 100% be streaming through it on this channel! Knowing me I'll also probably make edited highlights for those that don't really watch streams or like to go back in full VODs too

its funny how you're piecing together the plot and whats going on better than the weirdo's who play this game and revolve their life around it when they watched these trailers.

@@MetaSF_ the fact you understood the balance of light and dark is like 90% of the storyline lmao. People watched shadowbringers and didn't get it at all. Makes you understand why terribly written marvel shows are so popular lol.

well parts of them do sound partially western inspired to me, or at least have aspects of their approach, which isn't at all uncommon for final fantasy in music or some settings tbh, nothin wrong with it. They aren't entirely western or anything stylized or anything

"Or izzat this games cid?" Dude called it in like an instant. Also... Dude, Warriors of Light? Reign of Terror? Why would you come to the conclusion that 'Warriors of Light' means bad guys? The line even said 'cast down these these heroes' in it. The warriors of light are the Heroes. It's a reference all the way back to FF1. The group you play as were referred to as the 'Warriors of Light.'

I just remembered that somebody trying to get me to play had mentioned that in some aspect the Warriors of Light were "the bad guys", ofc I have no reason to 100% believe that but with Shadowbringers it made be wonder mainly lol
