I assume that they thought Chadwick was going to win and because he passed away and because he is a beacon of representation for the black community that the producers thought on closing the show on an emotional and inclusive as a celebration way but turns out that the voters weren't bias and instead the majority actually voted for the best performance and that was Anthony Hopkins. That's why the ending of the ceremony felt awkward. The Academy shouldn't have authorized that although I appreciate their good intentions, Art and talent should be always the priority.

Rare? Not at all. Look at the budgets of the winners over the last 40 years. 15 million crops up agiain and again, sometimes it's 5, sometimes it's 25... but it's seldom something out of reach of "ordinary" filmmakers. There was a few years around the millenium where "big" movies seemed to have a shot, but these days you can forget about it.

Not sure if people realise, but “their Wolf” who Fran howled for was their incredible sound recordist who sadly passed away a few weeks before that night. His name was Wolf, he was in the in memoriam that year, and from all accounts was an absolutely incredible dude and immeasurably sensitive when working with all the non-actors who made that movie. A pivotal figure on a small crew movie that won an Oscar. Fran’s howling tribute went over the heads of the majority of the people who watched this, but meant so much to the few people who knew. Most people just assumed she was being wacky, but for those few who knew what it meant, that was a truly special moment

Nomadland is completely different type of movie for most of the audience. Diving the world of Style of Documentary feel drama cocktail with Tarrence Malick style of filming were story is just about the journey of a middle age woman suffering from loss, grief, economic collapse, women empowerment, proper wages , capitalism and a lot of more themes to dive in. My personal favourite was The Father but however Nomadland shines as one of the most personal, independent art house type of cinema, which generally doesn't win best picture easily won this year.

@@Joker-sy4xr No, be cool, I like the fact that you asked. The answer is very long, I'll try to keep it short. It is just another Sorkin film with all the flaws of Sorkin. You have tons of character, 7 or 8 of which are main, they all the same, they all think the same way, THEY TALK THE SAME WAY. In a ejaculatory way, which is very film-like and not reality-like. I would have preferred charaterization for all of them. The movie should be about an important matter but it deals with it in a very old way, it does seem like a '90s average american oscar-friendly movie (you know things like forrest gump or really shit movies like driving miss daisy) and, in fact, it is really predictable. I knew how the movie would end two minues into the movie (due also to the fact that the characters are stereotypes and not real human beings) so I knew instantly that the shiest one would have had his uplift in the ending and just in the ending (why to build an actual arc?). And we can progress to the direction, which is very very very very very very very very very very very very very very BAD. Sorkin isn't capable of being behind the camera and of SHOWING THINGS that's why his characters talk a lot with expository dialogues (which are the worst type of dialogues). And just looking at the scenes it is pretty obvious that he has no idea what he is doing. You know, direction doesn't mean shooting actors why they repeat what is written in the script, and that's what he does. I cannot, and nobody can, tell a thing like "wow, the camera work/angle/or else in this scene is to represent blah blah blah". So, overall, this movie is just a bland mobie made for mainstream audience so they can feel good about the fact that they watch "important films" and not just superhero movie, but they are the same thing.

Shame on the producers for breaking a tradition of 93 years: there's a reason why Best Picture is ALWAYS AT THE END, cause it means excellence on everything, acting, directing, writing, costume design, cinematography, etc. To push Best Actor to the last award just for ratings was wrong in so many levels and disrespectful, like exploring Chadwick's death for more views. Shame on you, Steven Soderbergh, Stacey Sher and Jesse Collins. Don't ruin the Academy Awards traditions. And I ABSOLUTELY LOVE Rita Moreno making reference to West Side Story and her beautiful win as Best Supporting Actress in 1962. To this day, her performance as Anita remains one of the most well deserved Oscars of all time. She's so good in that musical that she literally shines more than the leading role of Natalie Wood as Maria. And about the award this year: I prefer The Father but still a well deserved win for Nomadland, represented well this strange year of 2020 that we had with the pandemic situation. Minari, The Sound of Metal, Trial of Chicago 7, Mank and Promising Young Woman all masterpieces, in my opinion. It was a good year for movies

A 3rd movie actually made the same award sweep, Slumdog Millionaire in 2009, but in that case Danny Boyle was only the director and the sole producer was Christian Colson.

This is a good win, Nomadland is a great film. I'm nobody to tell this to the Academy but, for the next oscars: - Give "Best picture" at the end, no matter how predictable the winner is. - We know all art is political. But performance on art, method and technique should be the first things in consideration when nominating a movie... then comes the message and the virtue signaling. - Bring more genres to compete for best picture: where's sci-fi, horror, action, musicals, documentaries? There're a lot of great films of those and not even need to be blockbusters. The category went up to 10 for that. - Stream the show outside cable if you want to increase the ratings... few people watch Cable TV nowadays. Look at The Game Awards for example. - Try to pretend, at least, this is not a lobby contest. - And for the love of god: BRING BACK A HOST!!!

@@ronaldmcdonald2817 One, it is my ballot. Two, Nomadland is a great film. Of course you didn't like since you just like mainstream movies. So glad you didn't like, it means I am right. The way Zhao mixed drama and documentary and his direction style (which is basically what film-making is about) are really impactful. Just watch the long shot when Fern takes a walk. Just amazing. PYW is a good film. I was mixed about the ending, too much cinematic, but overall the movie is a nice one, with a nice script, well written characters and very good direction, I like the fact that the movie is full of Christian symbols, but you didn't notice them, I am so sure, you are too stupid and blind to get that. Finally, Mank is a boring and cold film. As a lover of classic cinema I was expected that movie for so long, had great expectations and it is just fine. I can't deny that, TECHNICALLY, Fincher's direction is good, but artistically and humanly it was very weak. Literally, the moment I felt more loves was when I saw Bette Davis. Plus, the script is very confused and the characters are flat, Finxher's father was a journalist, not a screenwriter and you can see that. Quite the same issue with Judas and the Black Messiah. No characters at all. Hampton is a Messiah all the time, the few times we see him as a human it is just for teen drama scenes. So the movie is were much talked, and it is basically a back and forth between a Hampton's speech and a shooting with the police. For two hours. We could have seen a lot of things, instead we see pretty much nothing. The scenes are good directed, though King has to practice, it was palpable that the movie was a debut. And both Mank and Judas were so inaccurate. Mank made Welles a villain because of a book that it is knows is full of lies, Judas made Hampton so full of American-values when he was a Communist. Of course they are movies, but I think that movies, as an art form, just like an historic novel, has to shine a light from inside. What Mank and Judas talk about you can easily read in Wikipedia in a more correct and understandable way, a thing that we have seen in so many films that are Oscar-friendly. Nomadland, instead, makes you understand what living as a nomad is like and humanize those people, a thing you can't learn on wikipedia.

@@aqualcunopiaceclassico3201 your argument doesn’t work because I think Mank should have won and that’s not mainstream. I didn’t like it so you are right that’s it’s good doesn’t make sense because I love films that are universally loved. Also I like Cries and Whispers and you love that film so that means your wrong. Zhao’s directing isn’t good because it’s inconsistent. It’s sometimes shot like a documentary and sometimes a film. It doesn’t chose and it feels inconsistent. Nothing is stand out about the film besides one shot. PYW script was garbage. It’s preachy and so dumb. Cassie is a very unlikable and unreliable Character. Directing was nothing and if anything is a little silly at times. I don’t think you should be calling me stupid when you support Biden and are totally fine with him being ok with genocide. Also your arguments against 1917 were all wrong and you missed lines within the first 5 minutes. Mank really isn’t that boring but that’s just me. Artistically weak? The film put a lot of effort into making the film look like it’s from the 30s. Pretty artistic. Saying Mank isn’t artistic is like saying The Revenant isn’t artistic. How is the script confused? Also Mank is a very interesting and likeable character. Judas’s character aren’t that underdeveloped. There not the most interesting but the two leads are solid. I actually agree with you that I didn’t like the portrayal of the black panthers. Films don’t have to be historically accurate as long as it knows it’s not going to be history. I don’t have a problem with films like Gladiator and The Patriot and Gangs of New York because they are not trying to be historical films. Also I don’t think anyone has vilified nomads. Also couldn’t you say Mank humanized the alcoholic Mank and the film makes you sympathize and relate to him.

@@richardlugali2690 No this film isn’t close to perfect. The script is terrible. The ending is so dumb. Directing and cinematography are nothing special at all.

I felt like the end of this ceremony was a big middle finger to Nomadland, Anthony Hopkins, and Chadwick Boseman. -_-

@@LuxoJrFan I don't understand the Oscar hype for Sonic. I just don't. What is so Oscar worthy about it? It's just a typical popcorn flick. Not even matching the perfect blockbusters like Jaws and Back to the Future.
