Nomadic Marai 2024 update | Full Review | The Watcher

My First Nomadic - perhaps my last if they watch this review!
£1050 is no joke, at this price the watch competes with Christopher Ward, is it as good as or no better than Aliexpress watches?

It also has no impact on the 'honesty' of the reviews as you all know, I couldn't give that much of a damn and call it as I see it! Very nice, but in a universe that contains San Martin, Seestern, Proxima, CW..etc, the cost is just not justifiable

For a microbrand, I expect a more original design like Christopher Ward or Formex. The case, index and bracelet look like a Rolex or Tudor divers but it's not the Aliexpress prices so I don't see the added value. Thanks for the review.

“Trademarked” micro glide made me laugh. That’s the exact clasp you see on dozens of AliExpress watches at €200 or less.

I think you diplomatically avoided the elephant in the room, which is that this is yet another submariner homage. For $1300 US I really want something more or different than that. The font they use for their brand name reminds me of the font I saw when someone got high score on an arcade video game in the 1980s. Finally as one of your other commenters mentioned, I can pay the watchmaker from Proxima if I want a hi beat movement to be regulated, and receive decent customer service, for a fraction of the price.

Good review, that is a good looking watch and I hope it sells well. I do think knowing it is assembled in Belfast and has a proper warranty, plus a regulated Sellita adds a lot of value 👍. Sadly, I wouldn't pay £1000 for it.

Well, it is a very nice watch with definite advantages but imho not worth the msrp. At that price point, I would definitely go with Christopher Ward. Now, for a third of the price, San Martin, Proxima, and Seestern are my choices all day long. Proxima even regulates their movements and provides pictures of the actual watch, including a pic of the watch on the timegrapher! As these Chinese watches keep getting better and better, it is becoming harder, at least for me, to justify the additional money for some of the other higher tier microbrands.

Great comparison. Theae days, you've got to build detail. For me, the hands are sanitised, lacking character compared to the watches and brands it is homaging.

I see nothing on this watch that you can't get a lot cheaper on a San Martin, except the Swiss movement. 😞 I'm not prepared to pay an extra $1000.00 for a Sellita SW200. 😲

First of all I think youve been very fair. I don't know how people can justify spending that much on this. There's no originality to the design and no brand recognition (who knows how long they'll be around to honour that warranty). I wish them all the best but the other watch they have should be the one they sent

Lucky for Nomadic it’s targeted customers will scoff at the thought of a SanMartin. So some sales are assured. They won’t be disappointed with their purchase either.

I prefer Saint Martin the price and quality but overall quality no both of my San Martin.I had to take a stone to the sharp edges on the bracelet and the case but I’m a retired tool maker so I have no problem using a stone. Currently, I have the San Martin 39 mm titanium Tudor style watch and I had to stone the edges but on the reviews I read of the $4500 Tutor It also had sharp edges so I’m happy with the San Martin rework it a little bit after I purchase it to get it smooth the way I like it. This watch here $1300 I looked on eBay and I don’t see anything for sale or resale on this watch so it’s a watch that if you spent $1300 you’re never gonna get any money back for it like that you’ll be lucky to get 200 for it.

It's a ballsy price for what it is. I get the hand built element and likely regulation etc but, when you can get a SM etc for less than half the price and same movement... I know where my meagre wage would be spent (when not going on stupidly expensive boots)

That is Squale money. Compared to San Martin, I'm sure Nomadic won't let the first version buyers be guinea pigs, and then release a ver2 or even 3 to fix the issues with the watch you actually bought.

Selita SW200-1 is meh. Worst of all worlds, needs more regular and more expensive servicing compared to Japanese movements for no discernable benefit. Frankly I'd have an NH35/38 and save my money or pay a bit more for a better movement.

I really want British microbrand watch companies to succeed, but Nomadic haven't done themselves any favours. The watch is solidly put together, but it's nothing special. The design is generic and rather bland. The movement is decent, but not groundbreaking. The attention to detail isn't great. Above all, the price is ridiculous. Nomadic are playing in a very crowded segment of the market, and there are dozens of other companies offering more for less. Hopefully they can learn from this and take inspiration from other British brands like Isotope, Alkin, Arken, Anordain and Garrick, and learn how to make great watches that stand out in a crowd.
