Yeia sou JIm. I agree with you 100%. When I first did my own brakes, I would omit cleaning the caliper brackets. As a result the rust buildup caused a very tight fit for the new pads. I now take a wire brush to them and make sure the pads slide freely.

Jim, my dad's breakes needed changing and while he was driving his breakes started making this noise and smelling like the breakes were rubbing. Once he got home he changed all 4 breaks pads on his sportstrac, but still making noise when he drive it.

For 40 years have you tried the CV boot grease in your slider pins. That is the best lubricant to use in anything with rubber.
Love seeing Eric on the Allstate channel, he make some of the most accessible repair and car repair theory videos on KZread.

this is the BEST brake work tutorial video I have ever seen!
I can see and appreciate how conscientious you are with your work! That is commendable and a rare trait missing in most mechanics I have known! Thanks for the tips!

very happy to see Eric O here. Eric Obrtochta.
Great video. I've been doing my own brakes for decades but learned a bunch from this video. Thx again!
Embarrassed to confess that I am guilty of this same mistake! I felt that since I had gone to auto mechanic school back in the late 60's I would be capable of doing such a simple job as replacing brake pads. Yes, you guessed right. My brakes squeal! Thank you for sharing your knowledge! I look forward to continue learning from you!
At 6:00 I have found this to be the most important info during a brake install! A lot of times the brake pads you buy at auto parts stores will fit too tight because those clips are either the wrong ones or carelessness of the manufacturer. Then you have to pull out a file or dremel tool and shave a little bit of the ears down. A lot of people don't realize some clips (abutment clips) are designed to push the brake pad away from the rotor when the brakes aren't in use to minimize friction and brake wear, not simply to minimize rattles/squealing.
I love the simplistic explanation of things in this video, and the clean presentation. It's easy for someone like me, who knows nothing yet, but is trying to learn about changing brake parts to grasp. Thank you for this.
Eric O. is awesome. This is the cleanest brake job I have seen him do (no rust like all his other customers LOL). Highly recommend his channel. Nice to see he got to service a "California" car - no rust at all :-)
Hey It’s Eric! I like to call him the specialist. Here’s a guy that knows his work.
Dude !!!! Thank you so much for this video. I did my own brakes about 8 months ago and started getting the squeal a few weeks ago. Amazingly, I bought cheap stuff and didn’t change the brake shims. Bought them at autozone as well as the grease and a couple hours later it’s quiet again. Thanks !! From now on, only good stuff and no half assing
Well done again by Eric O, I am a enthusiast myself but always get great information from his "How to DIY"
Guy, you are full of helpful info and you are appreciated for all that you do, and this just adds to the plethora of things that you share, thanks!!!!
Excellent delivery of your content Sir... Great Knowledge... linear delivery of what to do... in what order... crystal clear verbal commentary... Extraordinary communication... very pro video audio skills. Thank you.
Great tips. I just did a couple of brake jobs (first time ) and everything went fine. This is a fairly straightforward DIY that can save you a lot of money. A long breaker bar is a must. Thanks for sharing.
I didn’t think you could teach me something new but you did. The lubricating underneath the hardware was new to me. Thanks so much.
I’ve watched probably 10 videos on KZread’s about brakes and tips because I will changing mine in my Dodge Ram and you are the only one that does this. Good tips. I don’t want to waste time and then have my breaks squeak or make noise. Great tips. I always watch your videos on stuff like this.
It made taking off the breaks and caliber look SO EASY!!! Thank you for this video, I'm having that noise now, so I will check it out. Thank you again.
excellent advice. I've made these blunders many times and learned the hard way. Simple, direct and easy. Thanks for your great video!
Eric O./South Main Auto are the best! Always willing to share what he knows. Just did this same exercise on a '08 Dodge Durango that had squeaking brakes. Plenty of brake pad left, and the metal-to-metal contact surfaces were the culprit. Great tips for the DIY'er.

I find your videos very helpful. They are direct, full of important information without being too bloated or judgemental. I think I'll go and redo my brake and rotors job l did on my 2005 Buick Allure (Lacrosse), I made some of the mistakes you mentioned. Ok, most of the mistakes you mentioned.
Great video, very articulate and helpful. Thanks Eric for the great tips!
Excellent video!!! Clear, concise, yet filled with what I needed to know!!
It really worked, only lubrication was require. Big Thanks from Sydney Australia

Eric is the man! Good choice and thank you Allstate!!
This video should be the first video when you google noisy brakes. I had a whistle coming from my passenger side that was driving me nuts, not to mention in looked bad coming from a luxury car. Watched a bunch of different videos, read a bunch of different forums, this should have been my only stop. Took the brake components apart, cleaned and lubricated. Issue completely fixed. THANK YOU!!!
Pretty simple fix really. Just remove the brakes, It eliminates the noise all together.

Thanks for the video. I was just taught how to change my brakes and rotors myself, however, I wasn't shown what you just demonstrated in your video. The cleaning and lubricating. That will help when I do the front of my van this week.
Wow! Your videos are so well done. You are so helpful. i have a “humming” sound coming from my front driver side. I was sure it’s dirty brakes. Now I know! Thanks!
Great explanation for the overlooked surfaces that require lubrication. Thank you.
Very helpful, I also used your trick for getting broken bolts out from the head from exhaust manifolds took couple of try’s but it worked. Thank you for the videos
Probably the best vid I have seen on this topic.
Your video helped me figure out that annoying squeal, thanks.
Very professionally done. I missed the sound effect when brought out the brake clean. Ya, i know, you had to be serious hsre. Glad to see some proper instructions for such an important subject.

Very informative video, I learned something about brake squealing. Thanks !
Great video! Well explained and focused.
that's the problem with mechanics in Malaysia. when we asked them to change brake pad, they really change the brake pad only. no lubricating, no cleaning. take the old out, put the new inside. i wish i have the courage to do it myself.

You don't need courage.. Just the tools and the information on how to do it. Course, if you never worked on your vehicle before I wouldn't suggest this be the first thing you try. Try an oil change or a lightbulb and go from there. The knowledge builds upon itself.
This was so helpful, I wish this guy had a shop near me. Thank you!
Eric this was perfect. Thanks! Very nice.
I didn't know Alstate makes videos. Very informative, thank you for your work
Very well done and good explanations .
Hey Eric O, Great video! But I was curious as to if you had put any grease on the back of the brake pad before you replaced the shim. Thanks.
Eric O. is just plain AWESOME.
Your videos are great man. Thank you.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge
OMG, I was looking around KZread about "car brake noise problem" and look who I found. Thanks Eric, along with other of your DIY videos on brake systems, I now fully know what I must do to stop the noise from whatever my son-in-law and friends did when installing all new brake before giving us his car. The brake noise is now driving my wife crazy. Sadly, its November and getting cold. Some times after 48 years, Debbie is driving me with noise problem.🤣🤣🤣
Great video and brake information!
Very helpful, thanks for the video!
Thank you. You just took my DIY break job to the next level.
Great advice Eric!, Thanks
A true professional! Great video on the nuances of brake maintenance.
I found this video at the right time.My car has been making same noises and I changed brake pads but there is still the noise.Thank you very much this is very helpful for me
Great simple video..Thank you so much
Excellent presentation , thanks !!!
Thanks for this! Some great points made, after watching several others for an '04 Nissan Altima, some of what you mentioned was missed previously. I understand you need to press the brake pedal a few times until it hardens, before driving off, after brake replacement! Thanks!

Excellent video. Thank you!

Because I See AllState didn't name this fine mechanic (Dr. O) in the description. His channel is South Main Auto Repair on youtube. Check him out, he has really helpful content with Auto repair and diagnosis. Good work Eric O!
Excellent video👍🏻

Nicely explained, thanks
Could you post a link as to what line you are using in the video, awesome vid btw
Put rear brake pads on my 08 tundra few weeks ago and had a squeek on drivers side. After seeing this I took it apart and greased everywhere you said to and no more squeak. Was driving me nuts, thanks!!!
Eric, I love your click and thoroughness. What type of lubrication are you using or would you recommend?

I was told to use copper grease. But I am having some noise only when I brake lightly under 20kph
Always good information
The simple things are the most important. Good tutorial
I just did my front brake pads and missed some points that you went over. 2015 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawke front brakes. My runout was at .005" and thickness was 27.75 on average. I was a foreign car mechanic for 9 years but back in the late 60's and 70's. I will be replacing rotors on next brake pad replacement. I was wondering which manufacturer you suggest. Not a fan of rusty rotors. I was happy to see the Jeep cap! Glad I found you today!
Thanks Eric great stuff
