Noctua NA-FD1 Installation Guide

Ғылым және технология

The NA-FD1 fan duct kit makes it possible to significantly improve the performance of Noctua NH-L9i and NH-L9a series CPU coolers in Small Form Factor (SFF) environments where there is a gap of 5mm or more (up to 45mm) between the cooler and a perforated top or side panel. Bridging this gap, the duct prevents the cooler from taking in hot air from the interior and enables it to draw in fresh air from the outside through the perforated panel, which can, depending on the setup, improve CPU temperatures by as much as 5°C or more.
This video guides you through the installation process of the NA-FD1, using the NH-L9i CPU cooler as an example. For a full list of compatible coolers, or further information on this product, please see the Noctua website.

    I mean, in all fairness, they didn't invent this idea. Look at older PCs from the 2000s, there was a bunch of ducts on normal desktop PCs CPU coolers. They didn't invent the idea, BUT it is great to see such stuff, especially for mini itx builds. Bringing back stuff that can and will be beneficial, that also can get a better approach to the idea with modern designs and tooling, is a great move. I really like it, eventhough I'm not a mini itx user

    @@toxiccan175 totally agree with you, it just sounded a bit like they invented the duct idea itself xD But yea, the way they implemented it, very clever and easy to use. However I would like to see less plastic tubes being used to mount them. Yea sure you probably only need them once and you get a good amount of them leftover for other builds, but still. To be fair, I don't know of a better solution right now myself. But I'm trying to think of one. It aint good practice doing critism, but you provide nothing to improve the situation, sorry for that tho. Nonetheless, good product

    @@NoctuaVideos I guess that's because of the fan thickness then. With 25MM you're not really limited by airflow. I ran a NH-C14S in my Fractal Define 7 for a while, and the best gain i saw was turning the rear exhaust into a filtered intake, it dropped Temps by 5C. I had 3 top exhaust and 2 front intake, all NF-S12A fans.

  • @NoctuaVideos

    @NoctuaVideos

    2 жыл бұрын

    It's not so much about the fan thickness (L9 with 25mm would benefit as well) but about the fact that with larger coolers like the C14S, there's usually less hot air accumulating around the cooler due to the fact that there's space underneath.

    What is the tempreture of L9i with duct on the 12th gens?

  • @NoctuaVideos

    @NoctuaVideos

    2 жыл бұрын

    This will depend on various factors such as ambient temperature, case, workloads, etc. The maximum heatload we could achieve was around 160W on the 12900K at the TJunction temperature of 100°C. We could run the 12700K at up to 135W and the 12600K at up to 125W. Note that the wattages will be a bit lower in SFF cases though.

    @@NoctuaVideos Looks great. I am looking for a low profile cooler for 12th gen and L9i 17xx is the only option now. I was wondering if you have redesigned the metal thermal plate in L9i 17xx to make it bigger, since the size of 12th gen chip is larger? Can it cover the whole area of the chip?

  • @NoctuaVideos

    @NoctuaVideos

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yes, it fully covers the chip, the base is 40x40.8mm and the IHS is 30x40mm. Generally, the key point is to cover the hot areas though, so even if a few Millimetres on the sides were not covered, the impact would be minimal at best. The main modification over the previous version was for extra clearance and to reflect the different height of CPU and socket.

    @@NoctuaVideos Thanks for this detail. I've got a 7600 in a Chopin Max and it thermal throttles @ 4.4Ghz all-core most of the time even after tuning - I can only get the Wraith Stealth to dissipate 88W PPT if I'm playing video too. I'm sure the CPU could do more with this on a L9a-AM5. Maybe NF-A9 PWM Black too, as the Max has 54mm clearance and it seems like it'd lower power draw and noise while increasing flow vs. the NF-A9X14. (Can't go too high with power, as the PSU is only 200W...)

    A 6° difference in SFF is great, but you really shouldn't scale from 80-100, it's a common tactic by manufacturers that is somewhat misleading. 0-100 please.

  • @Klblaz

    @Klblaz

    2 жыл бұрын

    Temperatures are always kinda weird on graphs, as you probably should start at 0K (-273C) for correct scaling, but that's not practical, so you end up chooosing an arbitary temperature range for the axis. Computers more commonly operate in the 35-105 range, so that might be more appropriate, but it's much more of an issue for percentages anyway.

  • @Mom19

    @Mom19

    Or well, simply just don't make graphs, make numbers and tell the difference? A graph from 0-100 potentially could end up looking like small differences arent much, but really any improvement is a good thing in my opinion. If that improvement costs a lot more than it brings to the end user (also depends on opinions and probably preference), then not really a good thing price/performance wise. But yes, raw numbers are more straight-forward I think
