    I was a professional on the Claymore. I have trained thousands of soldiers on its employment and demonstrated enough live ones to appreciate the fact that I didn't have to clean them afterwards. But I do not know if this is possible or not. Its a Bakelite backplate, then C4, then some wadding, BBs in a waxy mold, wadding, and a Bakelite front. So even though the fragmentation/BBs is forward he's awfully close to a C4 sandwich. I'll wait for a couple of enthusiastic KZreadrs to give it a try.

    The “backblast” on a claymore is pretty significant. I would expect more damage to the rear. And based on the projectiles and range, I would expect the body to the front to be shredded. But this is “Hollywood” projections so, it is what it is. Note: in Vietnam, combat engineers would weld thick steel plates to the sides of their 5 ton dumps. They would then attach claymore mines on the plates and wire them individually up to the cab. Used on ambushes.

    My experience with the claymore is dated but from memory the explosive power of it is not that high. The explosive force is designed to propel the 700 ball bearings forward, not kill by explosive power. The scene is of course unrealistic and I am sure that if not killed outright, the backblast at under 1 meter, even protected by a ballistic shield would still cause serious injury. It would definitely have done more damage to the guy at the front.

    Claymores can be directed at a target - they usually aren't just like hand grenades, which when they explode, explode in all directions. That's why claymores always have the print "Front Towards Enemy" on the front plate (you can see the words on Hutch's claymore). So perhaps with the usage of a bullet-proof shield, this could be realistic. But who knows.... But claymores contain some 700 1/8th-inch ball bearings, and about 80% at least of them would have made contact with Yulian at point-blank distance. Wikipedia (they are always right, right?) states that upon detonation, the ball bearings deform "into a shape similar to a .22 rimfire projectile". 22 caliber rimfire rounds are the most common ammunition in the world today. So at the distance of detonation, this would be like being shot by fifteen (15) .22 machine guns simultaneously, with all emptying their 30-round magazines into him all at one moment. At least. And that would flay the flesh off of Yulian's bones. His ribcage would be exposed and clean. So I would say that the damage done to Yulian is more unrealistic than the damage that was done to Hutch standing behind that plexiglass shield.....

  • @Bitshitter

    @Bitshitter

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@sphinxrising1129 Yep, but you aren't up on physics: The explosion from the claymore = action #1 The rebound of exploding material from the claymore off of the shield = action #2 and the opposite and equal action that you refer to. This is somewhat represented in the video by Hutch flying backwards from the explosion of the claymore. Result: man behind the shield is relatively safe. By your understanding of physics, ANYONE who shoots a firearm at someone/thing, ALSO gets shot themselves by the very action. You're wrong.... Further - the explosive material towards the targeted man ALSO could ricochet off of him or off of nearby surfaces, and come back to the man behind the shield = action #2 as well. But THIS rebounding material would also ricochet off of that very protective shield the man was hiding behind = action #3. Man is still relatively safe, and the laws of physics were applied properly. You totally disregarded the shield. I already addressed this in my original post, by saying that "perhaps with the usage of a bullet-proof shield, this could be realistic". But I also said "who knows"....

    Gotta love movie physics ;) Yes, the MOST destructive power is from the front (due to the metal pellets) but if you look at the explosion, in general, it is a sphere. It will explode from inside to outward in all directions. The key would be how would you direct the additional energy/explosion. Movie Magic allow a shield (plexy glass?) maybe a metal shield (say 5 inch thick Titanium?) but you will still have the energy and force, but protect you from the shrapnel. (we hope)

    For the curious... see "Claymore DESTRUCTION in Super Slow Mo! - Ballistic High-Speed" here on youtube. But basically, claymore was on a pallet facing 3 ballistic dummies with a 2-3" thick plexi shield between it and the camera / crew. The pallet was completely destroyed and there was a 3' circular area under it where the grass was gone and there was about a 2 inch deep hole in the dirt. Outside that area, the grass was fine. They had a 3" plexi shield to the side and it was intact but every layer appeared frosted. In front, about 12' away the middle test dummy was torn into a few pieces and severely damaged. The side dummys suffered likely fatal damage but were not torn apart. It's clear that it's a highly shaped charge with a definite front.

    Umm, Nobody could have just put the Claymore on the floor in the aisle and pulled the trigger and it would have shredded everything in its path including the badass Russian but I guess since the blast proof shield was right there it made for a more dramatic shot.
