Noam Chomsky on Libya, Israel & GOP Presidential Candidates' 'Utterly Outlandish' Positions

DemocracyNow.org - In the extended interview with Noam Chomsky--noted activist, linguist, and philosopher--Democracy Now! asked the professor about his views on the war in Libya, the diplomatic spat between Israel and Turkey, and the positions of the GOP presidential candidates. Regarding Libya, Dr. Chomsky says, "you could have made a case for a no-fly zone and protection of civilians, but I think it's much harder to make a case for direct participation in a civil war and undercutting of possible options that were supported by almost the entire world." Chomsky goes on to note that Turkey and Egypt have been key allies for Israel and that the deterioration of their relations "contributes very substantially to Israel's isolation in the region." When pressed about the upcoming 2012 presidential election, Dr. Chomsky said that while he is no fan of President Obama, the positions of most Republican candidates on issues such as climate change are "utterly outlandish."

@AltairEgo1 Yes, and free markets dominated by corporations are not free. Free markets *only* exist when the market is made up of small competitive businesses and not large multi-national corporations.

@WikeddTung Never thought why debt has to increase? Because money is debt only without interest. As it´s a zero sum game there is infinite need to increase debt hence the ever increasing debt. When the income distribution isn´t that big the power pull on the system is bearable by those who actually DO s.th. but with 1% controlling 20% of the wealth this becomes a problem.

@WikeddTung We´re all paying interest. On all goods&services we buy there´s a interest baggage added to the price. But only if you own enough you can realy profit from this. As most of us need to consume their monthly income nearly 100% we cannot put "our money to work". Letting corporations aquire "personhood" is only one aspect of control.

@WikeddTung Well if they serve a funtion in society it has been a good try, hasn´t it? Securing the "Daseinsführsorge", ie. electricity, water, health has worked best when it was structured in a non-profit corporation..

@sh4p3shifter -- if you listen to more of his lectures you'd hear his theory that free markets have never existed, except in places where they've been imposed (iraq 2001, nigeria, etc.)

Though I enjoy listening to and reading Noam Chomsky learning much from what he has to say, it is with caution. There is prejudice in his view of Israel and the United States that I find unpalatable and difficult to accept. However, he has a point of view that is important because it leads to discussion and helps people in their struggle for the truth.

Capital Bhoy Israel's actions in Palestine. As I see it, the Palestinian plight is self-inflicted but Chomsky, like the Western media, prefers to blame Israel and America's support of Israel.

Israel is a terrorist, corrupt, apartheid, illegal law breaking, illegal settlement building occupying rogue state. Your pathetic blinkered propaganda to suggest otherwise, in spite of the genocide committed in Gaza last summer and for many summers since 1948, will not stand. p.s. Even if you disagree with Chomsky spreading such truth, you couldn't possibly explain how he would be 'prejudice' in such a way. He is an American who is a secular Jew with Jewish parents, ancestors and possibly - I'm not entirely sure - descendants who perished in the greatest crime in the history of modern civilisation: The Holocaust. Shame Netanyahu is exploiting the Holocaust to justify his own genocide against Palestinians, financed by sycophants US and UK.

@sm1135ster1 Actually, Chomsky has thoroughly debunked this with overwhelming evidence. Do you honestly think the AIPAC lobby has more clout than the concentration of corporate power that runs the country? If you even consider answering "yes" to that question, you need to thoroughly re-examine some issues.

@WikeddTung "granting them the same protected rights as individuals is dangerous, anti-democratic & a recipe for oligarchy." Err... well ...somewhere along these lines...yet with some spicy debt based interest money system added to speed up the redistribution a little.

"one of the really crucial issues for the human species [is] doing something about the environmental catastrophe" I love Noam Chomsky, but I think he needs to take his own advice and go vegan. Animal agriculture is by far the largest contributor to environmental destruction. And lets also not forget about the abuse done to animals in these immoral industries.
