"The Earth is not dying, it is being killed, and those who are killing it have names and addresses." -Utah Phillips

I fully understand what Phillips says and what you meant with posting this quote. However, earth is not dying and not being killed by us (injured, yes ... killed, no). Planet Earth has been around for hundreds of millions of years before humans appeared and seen some dramatic and radical changes along the way. This planet will be around for hundreds of millions of years after after we have killed ourselves with our non-sustainable financial and economic systems - and the wars we wage.

Last year we adopted a "Climate Leadership Plan" in Alberta. It says nothing about the tar sands or pipelines. Yesterday, I saw someone on the news talking about how we could get more money for our oil if we did not rely so much on it being bought by Americans. My friend's daughter is a local activist who spent years working for Greenpeace. I will go down to the Legislature with them next time.

I have followed Chomsky since the anti-war movement of late 1960s, and he's not often been wrong in major economic and social issues. Details he's missed, big picture not. Smart man, worth listening. I've noticed that people with little to say speak the loudest, but people with lots to say speak deliberately, and sometimes slowly. Chomsky is worth listening!

The average American produces 20 metric tonnes of CO2 per year. The average person in China uses less than 5 metric tonnes per year. Here's how to get one's personal CO2 usage way down: 1) Consume a plant based diet and don't use animal products. Grow an all natural vegetable garden to supplement your food needs. 2) Ride a bicycle for most transportation. 3) For heat use warm clothing and for cooling use water and ice. 4) Set thermostats at 55F in winter, 85F in summer. Doing these things cuts one's personal CO2 use by at least 65%.

Brazil was highest for climate change concern?? why did they elect Bolsanaro?

  • @jameslawrie3807

Because the class/race divide in Brazil is incredibly bitter. They'd vote for the frankly fascist Bolsanaro who promised to support them even though he was demolishing their democracy.

Climate change wasn't mentioned once in the presidential campaign that elected Bolsonaro. It revolved around a juridical farce articulated by Sergio Moro, a judge who arrested Lula without proof and became Bolsonaro's Minister of Justice as a reward, and around fake news claiming that Lula's party was full of sexual perverts and was planning on forcing young kids to become gay

there are consequences of all of our actions as individuals. take a good look at what you really care about. and I believe you (ie we) will act accordingly. the issue of population and food supply is of paramount importance. global wild fishing yields are at their maximum. intensive aquaculture has added to this yield. desertification is being addressed in China and Africa with a solution so simple - organic soil wetters. swale on contour and diverse agriculture that uses soak methods to retain and make more efficient use of water. fresh water for expanding populations is very problematic. massive capital works in China redirecting whole river systems. desal plants in Israel (which require substantial energy input) Energy isnt really problematic at all. nuclear and renewables can supply us with more energy that we could ever possibly need. a hotter climate results in higher evaporation. so creating soaks for rainfall and microclimate engineering are essential to maximise rainfall over arid regions. it is projected that we stabilise human populations globally to 11 billion. that is our current trajectory. improving our environmental engineering is of the utmost importance. imho. i dont believe in sticking my head in the sand and saying it is someone elses problem. it is up to us all to act. there are big corporates and policy makers that are doing the right thing, and there are others who are being rather dumb imho.

I'm sure I don't have to remind Noam, a philosopher, that most of the people throughout history have been wrong about most of the things most of the time. No reason to assume that has changed.
