You're gonna bring in steve bruce or someone like that, it's not gonna work out as well as southgate and you'll go back to mediocrity

@@mori5481 tons? Who? What did I miss? The players always have to take an element of blame of course but when you’re using some of the best attacking players in the world in a low block against Denmark in the 30th min you are asking for trouble. The tactics in the first half last night were working, Walker was glued to Williams but obv was told something else at half time because he started sitting narrower allowing Williams to basically do what he wanted and we paid the price

  • @Braddowski

    @Braddowski

    Ай бұрын

The low block worked - the issue was the attacking players not responding to it. Just because England have some amazing attacking players, it doesn't mean they work well together (see Gerrard and Lampard). The biggest problem England have right now is how do you make Kane, Palmer, Foden and Bellingham play together? Because they all want to play in similar space on the field which isn't possible. For example, Ollie Watkins was the best player for the tactic and helps Bellingham play the way he wants... but how do you justify putting Kane on the bench? Whoever leads England into the World Cup is going to have to decide which 2 or 3 of England's world-class attackers you want to build the team around and which 2 or 3 you want to leave on the bench and get constantly criticized for not playing enough. England fans forget that Alf Ramsay won the '66 World Cup without England's best player (Jimmie Greaves) because he focused on choosing players that fit the tactic he thought optimized the rest of the players he had at his disposal. But modern England fans just want an all-star exhibition team to suddenly work together.

As an Englishman, Spain were the deserving winners, not just of the final but the tournament as a whole. Spain were one of the few bright spots in amongst a sea of negative defensive football. It’s really hard to phrase this next part without sounding entitled, but getting to the final doesn’t feel like something worth celebrating. England played terrible for much of the tournament and if you ask any England fans what their highlight of the teams performances were, they’d either say any of the brilliant individual goals or the first 30 minutes of the Netherlands. We played Slovenia, Slovakia and Serbia this tournament and made it to the final, yet only managed less the a half of good football throughout the Euros. I’d have much rather seen Spain vs Netherlands.

For Dele, at his prime, he was as hyped as Bellingham today, difference is he played for ol spurs, but at his height he got the price of 100mil (which is a lot), and Madrid interested in him, just watched the highlight when he singlehandedly destroy prime Madrid with CR7 & Modric, etc at UCL, that's his prime.

Yep they were good players then. Could do the same if any of the current squad drop off. England have had a very good squad for a long time. That's what the vast money on premier league academies has done. And not only have England had a great pool of players. They've had it at a time when most countries really don't. In the time England have messed around wasting talent, Spain has gone from a mess to rebuilding and winning a tournament. Italy have gone from rubbish to winning a tournament while quite rubbish to absolutely rubbish again. There is no peak generation in Brazil, Holland, Belgium, italy, even France have slipped back a bit. Germany have been poor for a long time and now they too, like Spain look to have reset a bit and could grow.

It is wild to say that Southgate is a good coach and then turn around and say that his coaching style doesn't suit his best players! That is his entire job! Yes, plenty of players didn't really show up but Southgate kept picking them despite them having poor performances - it reflects really poorly on Southgate as a coach that he can't figure out how to use them. I also think two things can be true; the players didn't show up because the tactics didn't suit them and they also just had bad performances - in both cases Southgate has to make better decisions and be bold enough to bench players like Kane. Anyone with eyes could see that Kane dropping deep just kept making a mess for other players; all tournament, players like Foden and Bellingham had no one stretching the defense so they had no room to operate in and no options to play it forward - that falls at the feet of Southgate. If Southgate was directing Kane to drop deep and he couldn't see what a mess it was causing his team then I don't think he is a good coach. Kane had more touches in his own penalty box (3) than he did in Spain's (1)! Southgate had plenty of their best players available and some real talent on the bench - the one player Southgate felt he was missing was Kalvin Phillips! Would you consider Phillips one of England's best players? Walker was at fault for both goals sitting way too narrow and Southgate had TAA available and didn't make the change despite the threat from set pieces he could offer. (On a side note, having watched Walker for over a decade the dude cannot cross a ball to save his life, actually makes me kind of sick to see him try and fail so miserably). Sorry for the rant.

I think the best thing to do is to make the goalkeeper the captain. Going forward. Because the goalie doesn’t change often. Having an outfield player as captain is not great, because the manager and teammates feel he must always play, whether it’s Kane, Messi or Ronaldo. Were Kane not the captain, I think the manager would not have so much pressure to build the team around him. As the main goalie tends not to be substituted/benched, there’s a player who is going to be in every match and it won’t be an issue. Southgate would feel much freer to choose Toney or Watkins or both up front, were Kane not the captain. Whoever takes the England job, his first decision has to be: make Pickford captain. Didn’t do Iker Casillas any harm!

they asked Jude Bellingham earlier in the tournament "Who writes your scripts?" and he said "I do" - well he had two pretty blank pages for the semi and the final, apart from one layoff for Palmer's goal. He may become a more dominant figure in time. The margins are so small and England are very close and while they often feed off foreign colleagues in their clubs to excel themselves, they struggle to feed off each other to the same extent. England may need a real 'winner' coach who can instil more tactical clarity and attacking nous, but there's not many of these who are English. If Southgate goes, they should be grateful for what he's done

Honestly, I think the problem with England not winning anything in the last few tournaments, despite reaching finals and semi finals, is the fact that Kane has clearly been afflicted with a gypsy curse at birth that makes it so he will never, ever win a trophy.

What I am most surprised about is that England did not play as if their lives depended on it, they did not play like they learned from the last EUROs, it did not look like they gave it their absolute all, which is just baffling to me. Yes, they scored a goal, it was one of very few good moments they had in the game, but it never looked like they were actually going to win this match. Spain, on the other hand, looked like they were in control basically the entire match and there was never any doubt that they were gonna win this. It really was quite one-sided.

The only reason why you reached the final WAS because the players showed up. Without your individual class running around there up front you would have exited at Slovakia the latest. But yes, this team is even better than the 2020 or 2022 versions of it. Lingard and Alli missing is exclusively a positive. Belligham, Rice and Foden are better than themselves before ...

He is coaching one of the best countries in the world and the best at the moment and he doesn't know how to win anything from him. The players are not to blame for this, but the coach who makes the tactics for the match against Slovenia defends the situation 0:0, against Denmark 1:0 and against Serbia 1:0 and 1:1 against Switzerland where they rely on penalties !!!!! That's not the mentality of a "good coach"

Only team I genuinely saw Spain time-waste against (granted it was only for a few minutes in ET at 1-1). Looking back at how the handball that wasn't given should've been given offside, I've now accepted that Spain were just the best team and deserved to win this euros. Crazy how on paper France, England, and Germany should've won, but Spain were just an amazing team. Credit to La Fuente but I won't be surprised if Germany get revenge at WC 26

He has a team of better prem players to undisputed world class players to his disposal and lets them play an awful looking uninspired anti-football that even any championship side could play better. The only reason they got this far was individual quality and luck. They should have been eliminated in the round of 16 for the sake of good football.

Spain were the deserved winners in the end (even if I don't like how they seem to act like they've been shot anytime a player so much as nudges them), but ultimately this tournament was defined by underperformances. Portugal, Belgium, England, Croatia, Italy. Even France and England despite them both being semi-finalists, played a style of football that was just not entertaining and in England's case if not for Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane they would've been deservedly knocked out by Slovakia. -- Ultimately my memory of the tournament as a person of Scottish descent will be getting genuinely angry at Scotland's performance 'vs Hungary' where we just kept on passing the ball backwards in a game that was must win. We had the majority of the possession in that game yet almost no shots on target. The worst part is at times England were just as bad as Scotland this tournament, yet whereas we got ripped apart 5-1 against Germany, they somehow got to the final.

This is the best England-team for at least a decade. The reason you don't feel they were the greatest is because of Southgate. You touched that point as well talking about how Southgate couldn't get the best from Foden, Kane and Walker. Apart from left back and one central defender the team is unbelievable. Player for player only France can compete, but their depth isn't the same as England's. I'm not English and am thrilled they didn't win. The arrogance before the tournament and the horrible on field display despite being drawn in an alright group and by far the easier bracket afterwards would've made it so undeserved for Spain if they didn't win.

My England takeaways: 1: There needs to be an internal debrief focused on how so many of the English players can come into this tournament off the back of breakout seasons for their clubs, yet be completely anonymous on the international stage. 2: There is an obvious disconnect between team and manager, England have a wealth of attacking talent, yet have a defensive minded manager. 3: The England players need to wind their necks in and understand that the frustration from the fans comes from them wanting England to win, not to lose. We are all pulling in the same direction. 4: Yet despite all this, England made the final. You can say this isn't Englands best team, I think it is, but we can only imagine at this point what those players playing on full cylinders would be like, because it doesn't feel like it's going to happen out side of FIFA or Football Manager.
