You failed to report the most important problem concerning the Cruise accident. The company was found to have lied to the government and fabricated evidence concerning the accident. It was more the failure of the accident reporting by the company than the car itself that led to the demise of Cruise.

Advancing technology has a cost. The first planes crashed loads of times before people learned how to make flying safe. Now flying is safer than driving cars. The first self-driving cars will be similar. There will be mistakes and accidents, but we will learn from them and improve the technology. At one point in the future, a human driving will be riskier than an self-driving car.

20 years ago, while walking down the sidewalk a woman driving a pickup out of a parking lot knocked me into the first lane of traffic. Fortunately she was breaking so it wasn't that bad. But the surprise that she hit me must have panicked her because the floored it, Hitting me so hard it broke here bug deflector and knocking me 2 1/2 more lanes of traffic and leaving me lying on the road as she sped off not knowing if I was dead or not. I was very lucky there were not that many cars do to a red light a little up the street.

From the California DMV website… FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 8, 2023 Sacramento - The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) today issued an autonomous vehicle deployment permit to Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC, allowing the company to offer its DRIVE PILOT automated driving system on designated California highways under certain conditions without the active control of a human driver. Mercedes-Benz is the fourth company to receive an autonomous vehicle deployment permit in California and the first authorized to sell or lease vehicles with an automated driving system to the public.

You are missing something here. The computer did what it was programmed to do. It tried to stop, but it found the quickest spot to pull over when an accident was registered. The car was not programmed to detect humans under the vehicle. My Nissan Kick actually stopped by itself when my American Eskimo dog ran behind the car as I was backing up. My Ariya stops on a dime. The systems are designed to include humans. Like this example from Nissan Global "If the system determines that there is a risk of colliding with a vehicle or pedestrian in front of the vehicle, it will alert the driver through visual and audio alerts and apply light, automatic braking. This is to prompt the driver to take action to avoid a collision. If the driver does not take action to decelerate and the risk of a collision increases, the system will apply automatic emergency braking immediately before the collision. This will help to avoid or reduce the damage caused by the collision." You can put massive ceramic brakes on a car, and it can stop quickly, but you have to calculate the passenger's "discomfort" and the cars behind you ability to stop. I went to ATL with my Ariya and set the distance to max for the car in front of me. Cars behind me almost could not stop. If every car was on the same network and could talk to each other the world would be safer.

It's the exact same situation with airplanes. First they were dangerous, then they were safer, then they were regulated. Now every major accident is being investigated to death and made sure to not happen again. AIs will be the same. I suspect LLMs will actually be the solution for self driving, as they will connect disparate concepts with the driving experience and give it depth.

So a human driver hit a pedestrian and the self driving car acted as programmed in an emergency to get out of the road. Maybe a bit of software update is needed for situations like these. Now the head line is self driving car hits pedestrian. Why not ban all human drivers and replace them with self driving cars, it will nearly eliminate accidents. Even the accidents where Teslas on AP hit emergency vehicles is situations where emergency vehicles stopped to assist because some human driver messed up first.

Who did the person who got run over by the self-driving car get to sue for medical treatment expenses in the hundreds of thousands of $? The city of SanFran isn't going to be picking up the tab for when incidents like that happen. Thankfully the person who got run over survived, instead of the family attempting to sue someone/some entity for the death of their family member..

Tesla threw out several development paths and started from scratch when they reached a dead end. Musk even acknowledged that it has been a tougher problem than he thought. I would expect that these 3 laws should have already be required to be included as a subroutine or algorithm of any and all professed autonomous vehicles as well as humanoid robots. By its very generic category "Robotaxi", these laws should have been included and shoild be demanded to be included in the operation of any autonomous vehicle so classified.

Having to keep your hands on the wheel and your foot on the pedal makes Tesla’s sales pitch for self driving completely pointless. The whole sales pitch has been a gigantic bait and switch going on for years. Relying on AI to completely and accurately reproduce the visual capabilities and understanding of the world that a human has is ridiculous. If someone in another car tries to get your attention, say to roll the window down because they notice something wrong with your car, is the AI going to be able to handle something like that? That’s a trivial situation for a human driver. What about road ragers? Can it tell the difference between people who need help, and car jackers or road ragers? There are many such situations like these. Driver assist is not a bad idea, but I think true self driving is not a good idea, unless they are given their own dedicated lanes. But then you might as well just use public transit. That’s what most people should be using in a city anyway.

You’re using terms like “Robotaxi” “Self-driving-car” “driverless”- “robotaxis” “Robotaxis” are DIRECTLY associated with Teslas.. Yet when you mention them in your clip, you show an “Uber” Kia with NO DRIVER BEHIND THE WHEEL!!! IN A “GEO-FENCED” downtown area… AND HIS IS “NOT” ROBOTAXI/ DRIVERLESS VEHICLES ASSHOLE”!!!
