No Snow? No Problem! - Uncovering an Epic Ski Line Deep in the Backcountry

Спорт

The powder around Whistler and the Sea to Sky has all but disappeared. Us skiers will go through great lengths to find good turns and today was no different. I called up my two most trustworthy adventure partners and embarked on a mission to find some good steep skiable snow. As per usual, we didn't take any undue risk, but it was sketchy, thanks to the natural hazards poking out of the snow. We not only survived and succeeded, but conquered a target we didn't even know existed. Nothing beats blue skies and a snowy surprise.

In so many ways this may be your zaniest episode ever. How many times have the tops of your skis looked worse than the bottoms at "base check"?? Outside of that one audible gooner in the scrub. Running into some other folks who wanted a hit of Courage was hilarious. Love the Chapters too .. great, great work sir!! Stay safe up there and send us some snow. I'm pulling for you to hit 20K subscribers, I have definitely shared some of your vids with friends.

I remember this place. Back before I got too spicy for SCT some sledders got really mad at me for posting about this place on the internet. You know, the place with an entry on trailforks and peakbagger already 🙃 Great for logging road access up high, mellow terrain in spicy snow, and with more snow than rn, those cutblocks are excellent pillows

Hey! This is one of those questions I get asked a lot. For the last 3 years while making content I've worked full time and just ski on weekends, every vacation day and usually take one week of vacation a winter. I was working in sales for a marketing agency and before that sales for a phone startup. If you live close to the mountains, it's super attainable to be in them all the time. (it also helps I don't have kids or anything like that) I was recently laid off in September so I'm taking a massive risk and focusing on KZread. Barely scraping by so I really appreciate all the comments and hot sauce support!

Love your videos bro. Super entertaining content. Not hyped to see you blowing up backcountry spots on social media though. Just leave the specifics out... Yes it’s in Whistler, that’s all they need to know. Put in the hard work, learn how to read maps, study the mountains, do the research for yourself, and go enjoy the goods - that’s what it’s all about. I recognize that’s what you yourself are doing but by sharing every detail you are taking away that true adventure and the ultimate reward away from people by handing it to them on a silver platter. Imo it takes the magic out of the adventure and out of the reward. 😢

Hey Matt. Thanks for always tuning in and I appreciate your opinion. People have been concerned about me 'blowing up spots' for years now on and off the resort. I've always been a weekend warrior and a weekend hasn't passed where I haven't skied powder. To be honest, I wouldn't raise any alarm bells. Snow comes and goes and the barrier to entry in the backcountry is huge. Backcountry skiing will never be popular enough that there won't be fresh snow, it's too dangerous for most and it's expensive, that's the reality. Population grows, more people are interested in the sport, others lose interest. It's all cyclical. When it comes to fishing, I get it, pressure on great spots ruins a resource we need to protect. To me, snow isn't a finite resource, we can share the love. We all have our secrets and I always check the internet to make sure it's been mentioned before. In this case, it was very well known among skiers and shockingly tracked out when we were up there. I too agree, the beauty of adventure is in the process and journey. Everyone's journey is different. There's a million places to point fingers but I don't mind being the scapegoat if people in the S2S want to complain about a few extra tracks down a slope or more people having a fun time on the snow, I've got a thick skin. Just figured I'd let you know where I'm coming from. Hope to get some turns in with ya some day!

This time of year, absolutely bears. Always good to bring some bear spray. I'm a pretty loud dude so I'm a good guy to have around on the skin track. Cougars are always around but you'll rarely run into them and if you do, you're in trouble.
