Keep in mind that your view of the farmer's house, you can't see in their place because it's so far away. They would have the same view, it's too far away. If you can't see them, they can't see you.

Shame, there are a fair few snarky comments on this vlog. Karen and Haydn are working very hard on getting their house up and running. Personally, I have nothing but admiration for them and their family. I also appreciate them taking us on their building journey. All power to them I say & keep up the good work 👍

Privacy is all well and good for those that want/need it but just remember that you are also giving privacy to anyone on your land that shouldn't be on your land. Secondly. How about planting the more tender plants in large buckets or tubs for their first year and keep them on an insulated bed in a polytunnel. Then when they are more established and hardened you can re-plant them where you want them.👍👍

reading all the comments below I think many of you are being overly sarcastic and actually blatantly rude and I'm quite surprised after all the goodness that Karen has given to the RV caravanning community of New Zealand and I think comments could have been a little bit more constructive to be honest. I am following Karen's plan to get her own house free of the extortionate renting trap in New Zealand and I am way down south but I have always valued my privacy, I was brought up with the window nets in England in the 60s and Mum forever had those white nets behind the curtains and I am the same and why not if you want to shut the world out and not be reminded of all the woes and tempestuous ways of the world in your own castle so to speak so I fully understand what Karen is saying and I would be the same and the least people could do is actually show some respect instead of sitting in your armchair throwing sarcasm at a lady who has actually walked the walk and is making things happen. I've been subbed for a long time to Karen because she has been my true motivation in my own plight with living in a caravan full-time on tow trying to find my own slice of New Zealand and I am ever grateful and I wouldn't dare offer any sarcasm or dictatorial comments on such a valued channel as Karen's. Throw the sarcasm my way you like I'm used to it but I'm really surprised at the lack of diplomacy below. @@TravellingK KZread is becoming a regular forum for some people to intentionally cause as much disgusting hurt and mayhem as possible. Many turn off replies and spend all their days roaming channels for "victims" .. and of course if you rise and respond they get off on that and you'll only put your stress up unnecessarily. Many of my friends here from 10 years ago have turned off comments due to this same issue and there is a strong filter in settings but if no one is blatantly swearing or is vulgar then it's difficult because people below are not being filthy with speech but they are being sarcastically arrogant and holier than now speaking down to you on your own channel and respect has gone out the window although at the moment it is a minority. To be honest with you although I won't put much here feel free to delete this comment but you are worth more than these low pops at you and you have persevered so much to get where you are You are a new mum you are in a happy family and I would hazard a guest that your stress is through the roof for the sake of people who have nothing better to know than insult other people people with no channels people who are invisible and sometimes not. For us Swedish people this privacy thing is a little bit odd. We like too show off our houses and gardens.

You might want to stake all those trees so they will grow straight. I think your going to have lots of privacy in a few years. When I planted trees that got big I put them 10’ apart and that wasn’t enough. They grew into each other when they got big. I don’t know if they grow in your area but yam plants will cover your fence fast, they are beautiful and hardy.

Glass is mostly reflective during the day so that you can't see inside the house and at night you draw the curtains. Don't spoil that beautiful view with film. It is not as if someone is going to park their car and spy on you with binoculars 😅😜

Plant a feijoa hedge. Evergreen and huge and hardy. Ake ake will bend over with the wind. They aren't strong. Honestly don't stress about privacy. You lived in a caravan and people could see you lol you can always build an enclosure around a deck and just leave a space to see the view. Great place for outside bbqs in the rain and hanging plants. At least you don't have stereos blasting like in town. I can't afford a fence between me and the neighbours and as it's rented the landlords don't care. You need to remove the grass from around the baby trees and feed them with grass clippings. My whole gardens are fed with grass clippings and everything is thriving.

Gardening is never ending trips to the nursery to replace dead plants, or it is for me. I have found a local native plant society that has spring and autumn sales at good prices, but the plants are usually small.

Planting natives. The best times of the year for planting are during the autumn months of April to May or late winter - spring (August - September). Planting outside the cooler winter months means that a lot of watering may be required to keep plants alive. also depends on frost as young trees and bushes. Frost cloth definitely helps.

All those dying trees might still come to life yet. I've had plants I thought I'd killed come to life over a year later 🤣. I've lived on land in NZ and it's very common to line your property in high trees for privacy and as a wind break. What you are creating is amazing! Great work guys!

Hayden will appreciate the mature sugar maple. This is the most dense of the maple species, also called hard maple, so very good lumber for projects. Well known for use in cutting boards.

Those Tagasaste (tree lucerne) are a great quick growing tree, and nice food source for native birds. It'd be worth growing a bunch of flaxes as well. Hopefully you can get the pittisporum to take and grow, second year they generally really take off. Getting a few trees started to help shelter the others should help. I can understand the desire for some privacy as well as the views - hard to achieve in some ways. At least you have a good distance to the neighbours. Try running some frost cloth over the younger trees.

How about using a plastic sleeve for tender plants and trees, the kind that growers use to stop rabbits eating the young growth. Also keep tbe grass away from the base of young trees to stop competition for water and nutrients. Good luck.

I think its awesome that you are planting all those trees for privacy. Meanwhile I am dealing with the opposite problem.. too many trees which block us from getting wireless internet. oh well, priorities I guess.

Hello Karen hayden and Reece hope your all doing ok sorry I haven't commented for a while I have fallen so far behind I'm playing catch up lol but wow look like you have all done loads of work and looks good shame about the weather though but hopefully you will get there soon and bet it was lovely for you to get away for a bit other than the car lol it's typical ford I have had a few problems with mine and cost a fortune and then something else happens lol but I'm all caught up now and loved the vids you all take care love from us all

If you had planted all those saplings with tubes around the stems and a stake to support the tube, then the harsh weather would not have attacked them. I have seen small trees still in growth after several years still supported by the tubes. The tubes are left there until the trunk is the same size as the internal diameter and then cut away.

Why aren't you planting evergreens as well.? Because you are planting trees that loose their leafs in winter. Then no privacy for winter.

Not sure that I understand the extent of your concerns to be honest. I do not appreciate the types of foliage over on your side of the world. Here in the UK my 1st thought was densely planted hedgerows which are fairly quick to grow and not necessarily all that high.

I feel like 9 out of every 10 Manuka die even though lots grow wild around me.

Cannot understand you sometimes, you want privacy but build a house in the open and even travel with caravan to sites that are open to everyone to see what your doing on the next pitch. Build a 6 ft fence and get all the privacy you need and want.

Good planting trees for the planet. However pull down the shades at night and one cannot see inside during the day. Also no one is interested in spying on you, people just drive by and May admired your structure on the hill, no time for anything else. That said , it’s your life, so if it makes you happy then it’s good for you.

What is your Problem ? Your Neighbor feels the same like you, Have you got anything to hide ? Be happy what go archived.

An afterthought. The local youngsters might have seen this vlog and believed as you are so concerned about privacy that you walk around the house naked. So armed now with binoculars they will park up on the adjoining road just to see a new view. Karen talk about inviting voyeurs. Surely there are more enjoyable things for us to see than the all your dead saplings or better still comment on all the hard work that Hayden has done with house build. You should be very proud of his sole achievements.
