When I was Much younger my pickup broke down and I coasted into my mechanics parking lot. It was a Very HOT day and my parents farm was 5 miles from town and I my mechanics shop was 6 miles from the farm. My girlfriend and I were together walking back to the farm to have some… fun… We happened to meet up with my girlfriend’s best friend and her bf, so the 4 of us decided to walk that LONG way back to the farm. We happened to be walking past the school bus lot and my gf dared me to see if there was a bus with keys in the ignition. Sure enough there was. It had the nose of a Ford 2 Ton truck. It happened to be a 4spd manual transmission. The 4 of us piled into the bus and to our surprise it started. It honestly didn’t dawn on us what we were doing until we hit the county line when I saw a local police car behind us with his lights on and flashing. Our little town was so poor that they would buy worn out CHP cars from California (I’m a Washington state native). Those cars were so worn out that our police department would buy those worn out cars and literally drive them until they dropped. When we say the Red and Blue flashing lights, it dawned on us that, if caught would be arrested for Grand Theft Auto. I pulled the transmission into 3rd gear and mashed the gas pedal down. I had to make a 90 degree Left hand turn on Corral Creek Road, so in 2nd gear that old Ford went. Corral Creek Road was long and flat. I honestly don’t know how fast we were going because the speed odometer was bouncing between 50mph and 70mph. This was when that old bus was pulling away from the police car. After about 5 miles the road turns another 90 degrees to the Left and goes down a steep narrow canyon. At the bottom of that canyon is a hairpin turn to the Right. Even the bus drivers had to make a 3-5 point turn in order to keep from driving off the road to the Left side and going into a very marshy area. I figured that I didn’t have time to make a 3-5 point turn, so I tried to do it in just one turn. Well, apparently the school bus drivers knew how to do it in 3-5 point turn. They were right after all. The Left front tire went into the marsh and it was enough to put that old bus on its side. As we were standing on the back of the seats, climbing out of the windows on the Right side of the bus, we could hear the sirens of the police car coming. All 4 of us slid down the roof top of the bus and into that stinky marsh. We hid in the reeds and slowly made our way to the Snake River and began to swim along the shoreline downstream, until we got to Whan Road, (where my parents farm was located). We walked up the hill onto Whan Road and walked less than a mile to the farm. Living in a small town, everyone knew about everything, so the 4 of us swore to Never speak of it until the statutes ran out. I personally didn’t talk about it until the 10 year mark. We were terrified that we’d eventually get caught, but we never did. Not too long after that, like life normally goes, we all went our separate ways. I finished my college degree and went on to be a Mental Health Professional and through investing well when I was younger, I was able to retire early after 25 years of working for the State of Washington. I know that I’ll get flack from this post, but we were ALL young once and made mistakes along the way. No one got hurt and now over 40 years later, i still laugh about. A few years ago my wife wanted to see where i grew up, so we took the 3 hour drive. she asked me about the school "accident", so i showed her. she laughed too.

I believe you were in Benton City, and that would have been the Yakima River. I graduated from Ki-Be High in '86 and don't remember hearing about it, so it must have happened after my time. I lived out in Badger Canyon and the bus drivers affectionately called our route the Animal Run, and it had nothing to do with local livestock. I'm now a copy writer in the communications and community relations department of a regional, non-profit, medical clinic. What our parents don't know can't hurt us.

@@carportchronicles1943 Yes it was Benton City. I’m a few years older than you, but it did happen in the early 80s. The Snake River runs into the Yakima River just east of Benton City. The bus went on its side between Benton City and Prossor. A few years ago when I showed my wife where I grew up and the bus “accident”, I was surprised how much it had grown up with housing tracks. I’m quite sure that the police department still gives people tickets for going 27 in a 25 zone. After the bus incident I was going 28 as I hit the county line at the IGA grocery store and sure enough there was a cop hiding behind that Big aluminum barrel (that had a cartoon on it with a guy giving flowers to Sally, or Peggy say, I love you and the next year he said I’m still crazy about you). Anyhow I out ran another police car in my 1972 Datsun pickup. When I turned onto Whan Road heading towards the farm house, I was clicking the garage door opener, but it wouldn’t open so I had to drive behind the house to get away. The next day I was doing the speed limit and got pulled over. The cop told me that it was him that was chasing me the day before and even if I was ever going 1mph over the speed limit, he would pull me over and give me a ticket. I soon moved away and went to college. I grew up and grew some common sense and some brains before it was too late.

So it was YOU who stole my bus! The statute of limitations only applies to known suspects. Since no one had a clue it might be you, then you won’t receive that protection. I’m going to have the authorities track down your IP through your KZread username, and bring you to justice. You kids caused me a lot of pain and anguish. Your stupid stunt could have endangered the safety of your friends as well. All three of you could have drown, or been thrown from the bus from the impact. You’re in trouble now! Just kidding. I just made that up. I don’t even live, nor have I ever lived, anywhere near you. Great story though.

FYI the Allison 2000s can only be upgraded if they were built after a specifc date. Before that date you need a new valve assembly hardware in addition to the TCM reflash. The reflash can also be done on an Allison 3000 PTS updated version of the MD3060. But +1 vote for Charlie Ball, he did the reflash on my bus and I was super pleased with his customer service!!!

Fun fact: In Sweden youths can drive regular cars at 14, provided they've been limited in speed. This has historically been accomplished by locking out gears and limiting rpm. They modify the car to only carry 1 passenger (well... One extra seatbelt) and chop the roof to make it a pickup. They put a triangle on the back and call it a tractor. Most common in the country side, these contraptions are often classic cars too delapetated for normal speeds, patched together with stick welders. Occasionally you see a modern car limited in the ECU. A normal drivers license can be obtained at 18.

As someone who fixes driveshafts for a living, yes, it could easily be a balance or component issue now becoming obvious with your new increased speed. Obviously the nice thing about school buses are they are generally relentlessly maintained because, well… they’re always full of kids. But because they’re relatively low-speed vehicles, not a lot of attention is paid to balancing the shafts, just replacing components. Frequently, owners or mechanics are trying to solve vibrations by replacing components willy-nilly, and they usually just make it worse, or at best just DIFFERENT. If there’s an obviously bad center bearing or a notchy ujoint, then just replacing it might cure the problem, but if you’re going to drive this bus at higher speeds for long distances consistently, it would be worth it to have the driveshaft gone thru and system balanced by a driveshaft shop. Ask around some heavy truck garages or public works garages or if the school system has their own service department, and see what shops they recommend in your area. It would be worth it to have the drivetrain reset back to zero, and rebalanced as a unit. If it’s a multi piece driveshaft, it needs to be balanced as a unit, not individual sections.

thanks for the intelligent comment! and yes, the current plan is to drop the whole assembly and take it to a shop and have the carrier bearing and u-joits replaced and the shaft rebalanced. I still havent had a chance to get under there and shake things and see whats up, but im planning on a full d/s service and ill let myself be surprised if it needs less.

@@ChuckCassadyYT School bus shafts are the bane of my existence. 😆 Mercifully I don’t see them very often anymore, not sure why. But a full size bus has a 4 section driveshaft and they’re a lot of work. Also, while asking around, try to find a reputable shop. Much like tire shops, there are shops that understand the minutia and take the time to correct problems that are non-obvious, and then there are places that just stand some high school kid in front of the machine and all he knows to do is keeping piling weights on until it lights up green. And when I say ‘reset to zero’, if done properly, in most cases it’s BETTER than the ‘factory’ state of the driveshaft. You would not BELIEVE how many ‘factory’ driveshafts I see that are assembled crooked, misbalanced, improperly assembled… It’s been really disheartening over the years to watch some dealerships who’s idea of diagnosing the problem just means firing the parts cannon at it. They’ll just assume a replacement shaft is fine because it’s ‘from the factory’ but they’ll sell the poor guy tires, wheels, alignments, rebuilt axles, transmission rebuilds and when none of that fixes anything, they FINALLY circle back to the driveshaft and bring me this horrific excuse of a rotating assembly… Make your decision based on reputation, not who’s quickest or cheapest.

I bought one of those NexIQ usb adapters so I can hook up to the computer on buses/semis, it came with ALOT of pirated software including the allison software, I have a spare TCM and gonna figure this thing out and once I do I'll be offering reprograms for $100+return shipping. What's crazy is people want to slam on china counterfeits but this one saved me about $3-400 off buying the name brand, it worked right out of the box without any problems, I am a bit surprised. On my RE300 the TCM is at the rear right next to the trans (can't remember which side), and the other 3800 series buses I hacked up were underneath as well next to the trans on the driver side in the frame rail, funny yours was inside. I've only scrapped out international buses. My fam and I lived in a bus for 5 years saving for a home that we moved into almost a year ago, now the bus has been stripped down and eventually Im gonna remodel it but for the meanwhile I'm gonna use it for a mobile yardsale kinda thing and use it to make some money.

$200 is cheap too. I know you was hoping for 2100, but naww, 6th will drop you about 300rpm at top speed, maybe 400 depending on tires size and rear axle ratio. You can expect to gain 8-12mph top speed. The real deal is the mpg. Just dropping even 200rpm cruising, if that puts you right in the sweet spot where the engine is happy happy happy, that's where you get the best mpg and even 100 rpm can be the difference of happy happy happy, so yes, it's a very worth while upgrade. Also helps your engine last longer. There's only so many rotations in an engine before your bearings wear out, so less rpms is always better. As far as the 2000 and 2500 Allisons it's a bit more complicated, not just a TCM tune. I hear you need to swap the valve bodies in the pan too, FIRST, before the tune. And for those who are told, you don't want an MD3060 cuz it has an electronic keypad shifter and it fails and costs $1000 to replace. TRUE TRUE !!! But do keep in mind, there is NO MOVING WEARABLE parts in the that shift controller, so it's rare that the keypad goes bad, but yes, they do go bad occasionally. Avoid spilling drinks and such on them. Like, the location of your cup holder does matter. You don't want your coffee, softdrinks, or evern you Crown & Coke, scotch on the rocks, splashing a bit everytime you a hit bump and dropping liquids on the keypad. All these things will help avoid it going bad. I've driveni maybe 12 trucks for long lengths of time in my rollbacks, and I've had 1 need a shift pad controller replaced and I honestly think we got taken to the cleaners on that truck and it wasn't needed. Because when we got the truck back, we had the same issue about a week later. Took it back in, then they charged us another $1200 for a new TCM and it was fine since. So I think they missed the first diagnosis and it DID NOT need the shift pad controller replaced. And that can happen too. MD3060 is the best transmisson money can buy by far, hands down for a school bus. The 2000 and 2500 are also good units, but the MD3060 is a monster, and it's overkill really. It's more of a dumptruck transmission to carry and support lots of weight and much higher horsepower and torque than our bus engines put out. Point being, DO NOT BE AFRAID of the MD3060. Don't listen to Facebook University. They are GREAT transmissions. The other beauty in an MD3060 is, stand alone controllers are made for them. So you can actually have a mechanical Cummins 5.9 12 valve common rail engine with no computer needed at all, but then you add your stand alone controller aka TCM to operate the MD3060 and they work wonderful. You will however have to add a VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor, actually already in the MD3060), but then you have to add a TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) to your throttle body of your mechanical engine so that the transmission controller can read what you're doing at the throttle pedal so it knows how to treat the shift points and when to downshift.

  • @joeg7755
    @joeg7755Ай бұрын

Great video, but most important, make sure you are not putting your drive line into a situation that can't handle the overspeed. If it is then it will whip or jump-rope an destroy itself and possibly part of your bus. It may cause an accident. Very easy to check, have your drive line shop measure the section lengths, wall thickness and material its built from. From that they can calculate you max critical rotational speed (RPM) for drive line. You do not want to exceed that! Oh and if it does, you could always change the characteristics of drive line by changing material, or diameter or shorten the lengths for higher operating speeds etc. Good luck.

If it takes 130 horsepower to move the bus at 68mph, it will take that regardless of which gear it's in. At a lower speed the engine will be at a higher load/boost to make the same power. There will be some savings in reduced internal friction and some other things, but it won't be 15%! So don't feel too bad about the drive from the auction. Cheers!

Is the 5th gear in that transmission a direct drive and the 6th gear an overdrive? If so, you may think about adding a transmission oil cooler since there is much more waste heat created in the transmission in overdrive compaired to direct drive. Maybe thats the reason they blocked it in the first place for this vehicle/application. At least, please watch the transmission oil temperature especially on hills (if it's still in 6th gear) or towing or hot weather in general.

its OD in 5, and double OD in 6, and the torque converter is locked in both of those gears, so im not worried about any excess heat being generated. An over drive is more like 95-97% efficient because of the gears involved. Those 3 to 5% of losses don't sound like much, but given 100-200 kW prolonged engine power (uphill, towing) those are some kW of cooling the transmission/cooling has to be planned for. That's the reason why in older cars/trucks you could switch off the overdrive for towing etc. To not stress your transmission too much thermally if it's not build for that purpose.

cant hurt on a lot of these busses, to change the bushing for the trans mount, unless its hard mounted. Maybe modify it to have a bushing. Get the shaft balanced and to the universal joints too. Don't know what you have for gears and what your goals are, but regearing might also help you smooth hour the drive and fuel economy.

Yes you can do that, but actually all it is doing is changing the shift points so for freeway cruising it's pretty much a moot issue. Performace will also delay converter lock up, but that's really about the only diference.

Would 11r22.5 tires clear everything underneath? That would lower your rpm at cruising speed even more. Would lose some of its get up and go but might be more efficient. You would have to get it plugged in at a freightliner dealer to change the parameters in the engine ecm so the speedometer would read correctly

My assumption is cheaper manufacturing costs to make them the same for several applications, box trucks, etc because the school bus manufacturers/oems didn't want the higher gears, top speed, etc probably for regulatory reasons

Cheaper insurance for the original customer is a likely culprit. Same reason that some performance cars have absolutely unusable back seats, why many cars in the past had HP ratings much lower than the actual output, and why some cars and motorcycles have speed limiters. Manufacturers are cognizant of the fact that high insurance rates affect the decision for customers to purchase a vehicle or not.

I have never understood why manufactures would lock out a gear to limit speed on any computer controlled powertrain. If a speed limiter is required it is simple enough to just assign that value it in the personality screen of any PCM. That way you have full function of the engine and transmission up to that point. It is a dumb idea to do it otherwise.

All great points on the tires too. I do like to mention, a tire can say max tire pressure 110psi # so many lbs. Our busses are fairly light considering the load capability of the tires. And remember, you have 4 tires in the rear so do the math. Point I want to make is, 110psi is MAX. Doesn't mean you have to run it there. If you don't have near the max weight on the tire, and you air up to 110, then your ride is going to be uncomfy. It'll be like driving on rocks or a Flintstone mobile. Drop it down to 100 and you just might like it. I like 95 in my busses with 10R and 11R size tires. I do check air pressure with a truckers guage to be able to read the inner duals. I DO NOT add air until a tire drops below 90 and I've never had a problem. Now, if I have an inner at 100, and an outer at 92, I"ll air up. You prefer to have the tires balanced in pressure. I personally give a variance of 5 psi. So if 1 was 95 and 1 was 90, then I'm good to go. If one is 93 and is 89, well, thats the magic #. It dropped below 90, so now that I'm getting out the air, all 6 tires will be topped off at 95psi and match all the way around.
