Pure summer idyll - if it weren't for those annoying, unpopular, blood-sucking critters - aka mosquitoes. Today I'm going to tell you how to REALLY protect yourself from them.

A vary timely topic Vanessa . In the early summer we get inundated with Black Flies , then as it heats up the Mosquitoes take over making evening activity's mostly something to avoid if possible . August and September are beautiful tent camping weather with the warmest ( relatively ) water and cooler nights there is far less biting critters after your blood. Lots of forest fire smoke in the air this year. NO outside fires allowed anywhere . You are looking so incredible and healthy. Best wishes for you and your family . Ontario Canada .

Forgot now you mentioned it, always pack a spoon and a lighter. Likely rub the back of a hot spoon, lighty at first until you can take the heat, then press it in over the bite, itch gone. As you say Vanessa, an old trick that still works and works very well.

Nice one Vanessa. The word you were searching for is pollen. Insects pollinate flowers to make fruit. A military grade mosquito repellant contains Deet, if that’s any help, but I wear a mosquito net over my face so that I don’t swallow or choke on them!

I have found its always best 👌 to try and keep away from still swamped water 💧 when the weather is hot because thats where mosquitos and other insects tend to bite , and they have a knowing of where to bite a victim being man or animal alike. I have been bit badly myself on occasions and it's no fun , it's better to go out with spray protection than with non covering your body . ❤️Vanessa.

Great Video Vanessa! Very informative. This will help a lot of people… not just Bushcrafter & Woodsmen/woman. The occasional Camper and even City people can use this information to help them avoid Mosquitoes! People should dump any standing water they have around the home. If it just a bucket, a Child’s Sand Pail for the Sandbox or beach etc should also have any accumulated water dumped out of them. Keeping these areas that Mosquitoes use to breed will help keep their population down around your home.

They're also are attracted by the carbon dioxide that you expel. It can help if you can also camp in an area that has somewhat of a breeze passing through along with smoke from your campfire. It also helps if you don't use anything scented such as deodorant or shampoo. I would like to thank you for these videos and I'm looking forward to more. BTW I'm here in the U.S. in Georgia.

I hate 'em so much I'm surprised they don't use all the blood from slaughterhouses as mosquito traps that lure them en masse to their deaths (traps designed to exterminate them). I lived with a river behind my house while growing up . As it got warmer and mosquitoes got more of a problem , we ate raw onion and garlic in salads . As we perspire, our sweat made us less desirable to those blood sucking fiends. MY Grandfather taught us that trick . Friends might complain about your breath but we suffer complaints to avoid the biters .

Mosquitoes, ticks, and chiggers are really bad here in Kentucky certain times of year. I wear light cotton khaki color clothes, long sleeves, long pants, a mesh summer ball cap or light green golf hat, a head net, and light cotton gloves on my hands. Tall un-insulated rubber boots with my pants tucked in reduce ticks and chiggers from climbing up inside my pant legs. I spray Deep Woods Off on my socks and pant legs, all openings in my clothing, around my wrists, around my collar, around my waist, and up the buttons on the front of my shirt. If I am not wearing rubber boots, I also spray my shoes, the laces, and around the tongue of the shoe so the bugs have no way to crawl in. Before I started using spray, I would get 50 bites or more on each ankle and dozens of bites all over my body. I actually have some scars from chiggers. Thanks for sharing.

When I was a young boy, over 50 years ago, I learned an old wise tale; I was told that once bitten by a mosquito if you take your fingernail and double press a cross "+" right in the middle of a bite it will stop itching. I thought it worked when I was young and have used it throughout my life...but maybe it is just the power of the mind...I don't know. Where I live in Washington State there are not many mosquitos, where I grew up in Iowa, they were really thick there, really bad.

Thermocel will help with most mosquitoes. A permethrin base spray to treat your clothes is very helpful also. Best thing to do to make yourself less palatable to mosquitoes is add garlic to your diet. We are in an area with lots of mosquitoes so starting in early spring we add garlic to everything and take garlic supplements.

Oh yes, Vanessa. You would be the perfect meal for the mosquitoes! So sweet!! Yummy 😋 Keep a fire going near by and every chance you get, throw some wet leaves on.. just enough to actually make it smoke. And, you can always puff on a cigar .. that will keep them out of your face.

good information... we have something worse than mosquitoes in Florida called yellow flies and they are the only thing I fear in the woods lol. I carry a spray bottle of dawn dish soap water to shoot them down. It works quick and won't linger like raid or something.

Vanessa... Mosquitoes are attracted to Carbon Dioxide which we breathe out. But anything with DEET will keep them away for a long while. But as you said they love stagnant water. Often times they are even seen during major storms and hurricanes. Such a great video. Yes a Point for you. You really look special in todays video. Maybe I be like mosquito and bite you... Ich Liebe Dich SOOOO !!!!

Tea tree oil may help prevent bacteria and other microbes from growing in a bug bite. This can reduce the risk of infection, making it an excellent choice for children who cannot resist scratching. Research also shows that tea tree oil might act as a natural antihistamine.

More for ticks than mosquitos, in the U.S. we have a cleaning product called pine-sol. Mix that about 1 to 6 with water and spray from the knees and elbows down. Keeps ticks and chiggers(red bugs) off really well.

I may very well be one of those people that mosquitoes don't like: we have them here in Texas, but I don't seem to get bitten very often. In fact, even the one time that mosquitoes infested a houseplant of mine (maybe a decade ago), I didn't get bitten much, even as I swatted them by the dozens. (Of course, they could have been males.) A bigger problem in our part of the country is FIRE ANTS, who are so pervasive that I've been bitten even while bicycling through the center of town here in Austin! Those bugs suck. I've been thinking about a Thermacell, too, despite all this, having just learned about it: I have a Coleman stove that it might fit very well.

Aaaaaawwwwww Vanessa the wild woman you are and so gorgeous 😊😊😊. Deet is extra strong which I dislike it though so does the insects. Also Detol or Pineoclean helps to work also. Mix either of these with baby lotion and the hate it. Btw keep up the good work beautiful and love watching your videos 💕💕👍👍🙏🙏👏👏🙌🙌

1:10 tea tree oil dissolved in alcohol. You smell like a train sleeper after that, but no mosquitoes and it is natural !

Hello Vanessa! One thing that you can add to your knowledge base is that mosquitoes can track you whenever you exhale. They can sense the C02 from your breath when you exhale it. This also makes them attack you more when you are backpacking or hiking because you exhale more from that work. Perhaps wearing a mask would help but I have not tried that. The best idea I have is to nuke DC from orbit...THAT would solve 85% of the World's ills :)) Sending love and smiles from the great smoky mountains in Tennessee. ~~*~^^^*~*
