No More European eBay Sales From North American Sellers

Музыка

The EU and Northern Ireland NI are launching new General Product Safety Regulation (GSPR) that goes into effect on December 13, 2024 which means a large portion of North American eBay sellers are no longer going to be selling their items to people in that region. What will that look like for the future? The regulations will be a huge burden to eBay sellers and will make trying to sell certain used items completely impractical, leaving no option but just unfortunately to block many European countries.

I sell to Germany all the time and if I need to get around the packaging rules, I just use a used branded box, like a Nike shoebox or something. They've already dealt with it, so it just slides on through with no issues.

Oh interesting. When they announced those regulations I did look into applying for a licence in Germany to be officially registered. But from what I could gather, it seemed like you had to predict ahead of time of time what you’re going to be sending there in the next year, as well as who your suppliers are for packaging and what the packaging is made of etc. Since sometimes we recycle packaging (eg Amazon mailers or boxes) and buy from different shipping supplies companies, plus the fee to register then that’s why we decided against it in the end. It’s too bad because we’d love to be able to ship to many more countries, but we don’t have the eBay Global Shipping Program available in Canada 👎

@@realwildgoods 99.9% of our sales (from Ukraine) go globally, about half to the EU. I haven't had ANY issues about packaging. They don't seem to care with used packages, only new consumer goods seem to matter, and don't forget, it is only if you're shipping a high volume...

@@Eyeball-Industries if half of your sales are going to the EU then this will have a big impact for sure. Make sure to start researching now what steps you’ll need to take to comply with the new rules coming in so that you’re ready. I’m sure some packages do get through, but I’d rather not risk that on the chance that they start getting rejected. The Post Office mentioned to me that you can’t use boxes that used to have alcohol in them especially shipping out internationally as since they are more of a fire hazard. I’ve heard that some people turn used boxes inside out to hide any kind of branding and make them look nicer too for when they arrive to the customer.

Honestly all countries should implement packaging standards and maybe subsidise it to help with any extra costs, the amount of plastic and styrofoam waste that is generated is pretty horrendous, it doesn't just disappear neither it all ends up breaking down and in the environment. All ebay seller should at least try to reduce it if they can and use recycled materials, stuff like shredded paper has always been good and does the same job as foam pieces.

These are the new carbon footprint rules for Europe. The packaging must be carbon neutral. If you use new recycled cardboard boxes, there is no problem. and I think the new rules only apply to business sellers, at least that's what it says on the Dutch eBay site. Only business sellers must be able to demonstrate where their packaging comes from and if they cannot prove this, ten percent will be added to the sales amount

Yeah we’re business sellers so definitely don’t want to risk any kind of fines like that. Thanks for sharing, it sounds like they’ve shared similar information in many different countries 🇳🇱

On this EU thing, is this basically just more zealous bureaucracy making life harder for people with excessive regulations? I was once under the impression that the EU was some forward thinking liberal inclusionary organisation but it seems to be more and more about exclusion, coercion, restriction and just making people's lives harder and more complicated. These kinds of restrictions just make no sense to me at all, I could maybe understand restricting modern new goods but why vintage and antique? God the world drives me nuts 😄

@@kowloonattic2110 I think this is a lot worse than that, basically you can't do business within the EU without joining the club, and if you don't join like some Euro countries have you get punished for it. Not being able to trade vintage and antique goods into the EU is ridiculous and a total restriction on people's freedom to do basic trade, and restricting peoples freedom within those countries to buy what they want.

It's not about the vintage and antique stuff he sells, it's about how he packages it. If he uses used packaging materials, there's nothing wrong with it. and if he uses new packaging materials, the EU would like to know where it comes from. that a two-hundred-year-old tree has not been cut down for it, for example
