No Longer The Luxury Minivan | Infiniti's All-New 2022 QX60

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Infiniti's QX60 has had a reputation for being the ultimate family hauler for shoppers looking for a snazzier logo and upgraded interior parts. That part has stayed the same for 2022 as the QX60 is the only option in the crowded luxury 3-row segment to let you leave a child seat LATCH anchored into place while easily accessing the third row. On top of that however the new QX is significantly more fun to drive and more luxurious inside. The most interesting twist is the new 9-speed automatic from ZF. Could this be a move away from CVTs in the Infiniti portfolio? I do hope so.

Great review. Alex does the most informative and useful reviews for the actual buyers like myself. Manufacturers take note. I've recently purchased a mid-size SUV and I got prepared by watching the latest review videos by Alex. Unfortunately, as of September 2021, if you need a vehicle right this moment you'll have to get what's available at the dealers and not all of them have inventory. If you have time, you can order and wait a few months. At least, that's the situation in NY.

Amazing upgrade over the outgoing model. Yes, the CVT should've never been put in as the only transmission option. But even more, there is a greater separation over the Pathfinder(or at least the Pathfinder roots are better hidden). And the interior is certainly primo. It is high on lux and logically laid out, with a decent amount of interior space. The only thing that are concerns for me is the Highlander-like rear styling and quite frankly, the two gorillas looming in the room: Genesis GV80 and Acura MDX. Did Infiniti do enough to bring it up to par against the competition? We shall see!

Last month, I picked up a new 2022 Nissan Pathfinder which essentially the same car as this one, minus many of the luxury features. I'm very much enjoying it, and if I had the budget for the Infiniti model, I might've gone that route instead. I noticed the transmission quirks that Alex mentions in this video, mostly in the 1st to 2nd gear switch if the acceleration is at a certain rate, but otherwise it's smooth as butter and a huge improvement over any CVT I've driven. I'd never really been a fan of Infiniti's bulbous exterior and dainty interior styling, but this one is quite nice. Thanks for the vid Alex, it was quite informative, and now I'm actually glad I got the Pathfinder over waiting for this one just for the slightly larger storage area alone.

Excellent and very detailed review, as usual. Thanks again Alex! I'm a fan, and am cross shopping this between the Jeep Grand Cherokee L Summit and Acura MDX Advance. When cross shopping between those two SUV's there are trade offs (massaging seats, 12 inch driver/media display, power rear seats, HUD, etc.), however with the Infiniti, there are no compromises needed. So Very excited about that. A few things I don't like about the Infiniti (again, when compared to the Jeep and Acura) is it's the only one of the three without an advanced suspension (compared to the double wishbone of the Acura and air springs in the Jeep). Also, there are a few design elements I can do without (the flat black wheel well trim, the boring and basic steering wheel taken straight from the Pathfinder, and the chrome trim on the front and rear of the SUV), but that's it. It's otherwise a great looking car with a ton of features.

Nissan has spent the last decade shooting their Infiniti brand in the foot. Back in the early and mid 2000's I really thought that they were going places, (much like Genesis today). They had a hot little sedan in the G35, along with a very stylish SUV in the FX35, and FX45 which came with a V8. All of their vehicles offered style, performance, and luxury features that belied their sticker prices, (again; much like Genesis today). Since then they seem to have lost their way, driving the final nail into their coffin with those damned CVT's, and I don't know if they will ever get back the customers they have lost because of it. People usually make $60,000 mistakes only once.

  • @smack9x

    @smack9x

The reality of the matter is the QX60 with a CVT is their best seller. G35 didn't really offer much luxury it was more like a small rwd Altima. FX35/45 was just a bloated station wagon version of the G35 with a tiny back seat. From a utility perspective it offered nothing, no cargo room because of raked roof design, and no towing capabilities. The CVT FWD replacement for FX35/QX70 has double the amount of sales, usable back seat, cargo room, higher towing capacity, and almost double the fuel efficiency. Their main issue they need to focus on are EV offerings.

Nice review Alex, being waiting for this one! It's a head turner and glad to hear the new nine speed transmission has been tuned nicely. At 64k fully loaded my only real issue is I would have expected this to have a little stronger acceleration, say 6.5 to 60 or so. On paper it's interior specs are actually very comparable to the 3-row Kia Sorrento but the Kia with it's 2.5 Turbo and 310ft torque I suspect will feel quicker and pull harder than the Infiniti. It's very nicely appointed and "sexy" looking but it's a lot to ask in the Autobiography trim price point for Nissan Pathfinder acceleration!

I'd venture to guess shoppers in this class care more about fuel economy than acceleration (me among them). The sorento is also appreciably smaller than this, especially if you look at the trunk with the 3rd row folded (sorento is 189in long, this is 198.2). This is longer than both the palisade & telluride.

These are nothing but minivans in disguise. No one is taking these to the track and they all have similar 0-60 times. Are you really cross shopping a fully loaded QX60 with a Kia Sorrento? The Kia Sorrento is only a 3 row on paper. The 3rd row in not usable by human beings.

@@bfish9700 I suspect the Palisade and Tslluride are roomier, though. They are exceptionally well packaged. They all have a third row big enough for growing kids, unlike the Sorento, which would be OK for young kids in the back two rows, but no good for longer trips with so little cargo space unless the third row is folded. Sort of like the RX-L.

@@bfish9700 I test drove the new Sorento with the 2.5 Turbo and it's acceleration is strong for it's class. It also returns 24mpg with the 2.5T and 310ft torque. Good performance numbers for acceleration (sub 7 seconds to 60) and fuel efficiency. On paper it actually is very comparable in usable size even though the QX 60 is 8" longer. For headroom it's a wash except the Kia has two more inches in the middle row. Leg room is also better in the Kia's second row by 4". The other rows are within an inch of each other. Hip room in the Infiniti third row is 3" better the other rows are about the same. All three rows down both are about 75 cubic feet of storage. Second and third row they are within two to three cubic feet storage of each other. So passenger space and cargo volume are in fact vert similar. The Kia has stronger acceleration, similar fuel economy, and space in a smaller package and a stronger warranty. Yes the Infiniti is a looker, has nicer materials and more prestige as a premium vehicle. But both loaded there is a 20k price difference, is the Infiniti a good value at 64K compared to the Kia at 44K? If you're marketing a vehicle as luxury, shoppers expect luxurious style, strong performance and quality first. Performance is important to many shoppers and expected when you hit over 60k vehicles and are compared to the very powerful and luxurious BMW X5 for example. I don't own a Sorento or plan to buy one, I just wonder is the premium Infiniti that much better than the mainstream Sorento in top trims at a 20 grand price difference!

@@smack9x Nothing wrong with cross shopping! Both vehicles specs and performance are in fact very similar on paper. The Infiniti is more of a looker for sure but that's even subjective. Passenger space, cargo space, available features all very similar. I think the Infiniti has a nicer interior especially the leather dash. If I were looking at the QX60 in the Autobiography trim for 64K I would expect stronger performance than its Pathfinder cousin. This is getting close to BMW X5 money which has an awesome 335HP V6 Turbo. Many shoppers do in fact appreciate the strong engine performance even if it's used as a family vehicle or "Minivan". The BWM X7 has the same V6 or a V8 option, are people buying these because they're "minivans and don't care about performance? They buy them for the prestige, the luxury and the performance!

The interior on this car is more polished than the MDX. People that buy this kind of truck want comfort more than performance. Infiniti hit a home run with this one. I own 3 Infiniti’s 2018 Q50 red sport, 2020 QX50 and a 2013 QX56. I hope they plan to compete in the sedan space again and looking forward to a complete redesign of the QX80

Acura is a more performance focused luxury brand so their interiors tend to be more sporty. The QX60s interior is beautiful and has more traditional straight lines inside but I still like the MDX interior especially the two toned consoles. I still think I’d buy the MDX, it has adaptive dampers and torque vectoring.

I have question about combined leg room. According to you review on previous QX60, it is 114.7. This new one being the same length, combine leg room become 107.8 (same as new pathfinder) 7 inches smaller? But from back to back test drive between MDX and 22 Pathfinder, I am very sure 22 Pathfinder is bigger than MDX in almost everywhere. I even think 22 pathfinder is bigger than Highlander although numbers don't agree. I wonder if manufactures are using the same method for this measurements?

QX60 was popular for their 3rd row leg room - the only luxury mid size crossover that allowed an adult to fit in the 3rd row. Now it shrank to 28" (by about 3") in 2022; even MDX has more space in the 3rd row - very unfortunate.
