NO LONGER EXCLUSIVE: Apartments taking over Nairobi's Kilimani & Kileleshwa as Bungalows go down.
There's a significant rise in the number of high - rises in Kilimani, Kileleshwa and Upper Hill.
We look at the reasons why and what is leaving planners and environmentalist worried.

Great job! Putting up high density buildings while the road network remains the same as 60 years ago. Trust our Kenyan urban planners to take idiocy to be next level

It’s very disappointing that Kenya hasn’t taken this opportunity to show the most incredible urbanisation and integration with trees/plants. It’s much too crowded and there will be a rise in health issues because of it. When will governments understand that a healthy happy population is a more productive population if they need to see the fiscal benefit.

It pains me to see the formerly open, green and breathable Kile, Kilimani, Lavington etc neighbourhoods getting drowned out by almost Hong-Kong-esque squeezed in high risers. This is what I call uncontrolled and uncontrollable development. The infrastructure will be suffering even more with the high influx of new residents. Maji, stima, sewage, traffic, how will it cope? Great content btw. Subscribed.

I totally feel you. Born and bred in kileleshwa i feel like a stranger when I visit now. The most traumatic is the FILTH. just concrete badly designed high rises and dirt. ALL Nairobians deserve better. And for the record, city planning has nothing to do with being classist. It is about good, attractive habitats for all. Rich and poor.

This is good workmanship. Better than what we get in some mainstream media. Kudos bro. May God reward your labour and bless the work of your hands. Shalom
Good thing for architects but not such a good thing for Nairobi's greenery. Most apartments are pure concrete with no grass or trees. Has the council planned for sewerage systems, drainage systems, public transport systems etc? Soon Nairobi will look like Dubai; flats all over.

Really great quality on the video
I am in the real estate business and I can tell that almost all those buildings belong to Chinese contractors. China has taken over the construction business in most African countries. There are more than 20,000 Chinese-owned firms operating in Africa. What are Chinese corporations doing in Africa? That's a highly controversial issue. The reason Chinese corporations are in Africa is simple; to exploit the people and take their resources. It’s the same thing European colonists did during mercantile times, except worse. They are squeezing Africa for everything it is worth. These huge investments only profit the foreign-owned firms but do not directly benefit the common mwananchi because only very few people can afford to live in such buildings.
This is fantastic .I watched to the end because of the narration

New subscriber here. Awesome content, quite detailed and informative. It's nice to see you interviewing Constance Cap - he's passionate about Urban planning. Another challenge arising from all these developments is overloading of existing utility services capacity; the electricity, water & sewage infrastructure that were designed for low density population have not been upgraded to handle high density population. I'm all for reasonably spreading out development so as to avoid congestion in the few cities we have. However, properly planned high rises are definitely good since they're a more efficient use of space. It'd be incredibly wasteful to let millions have their own residential and commercial plots/stand-alones. Not to mention the wildlife displacement and destruction necessary to accomodate such selfish desires. Unless we drastically depopulate, properly planned high rises are the way forward, particularly the sustainable, eco-friendly models.

Which is better to stay for visiting and wanting to hang out? kilimani , kileleshwa, or Westlands?
KENYA HAS REALLY GROWN ,WITH NO OIL MONEY,VERY BLESSED
What's missing in this presentation is _what_ is driving this so-called investment? Who is/are financing these buildings? And how are they getting approved? (In contravention of planning laws/regulations)

The super rich should move to Karen and kitisuru and Muthaiga. Kenyans have gotten employment opportunities. Nice documentary. Area no should check on the roads
Its better than Karen... which is literally separated from Kibra...by a road
The way employers paying nice salos moved from CBD to Upper Hill and Westlands is exactly the same way they're gonna move to Kiambu. KWAL, a parastatal, has already moved to Kiambu.
Staroot Developers is still the Contactor. He's everything. A Chinese Developer paying Casual Labourers KSh 300/- a day with no safety equipment working on such heights

New apartments with colonial roads and sewer lines.. Sad.
