Not sure he even starts for his club now if everyone is fit. Is there a worse RB defencively in the prem? Great going forward but every team targets him at RB...and seems to be getting worse! Hasnt played enough games in midfield to know if thats an option and again because hes poor defencively Gareth wouldnt play him there unless badly stuck

Trent, on the other hand, actually is not a midfielder. He is a full back. If Trent was a good full back, he would never be considered in the midfield. The fact is he has shown himself to be a liability at full back, so now people want to shoehorn him into the midfield. Why?

Foden is so much better than Saka at RW mate. Foden actually cut inside and score unlike Saka who just dribble around like a monkey, lose the ball and doesn’t provide any valuable crosses.

Secondly Foden off the left works well as him and Bellingham will alternate in game, Bellingham likes to drift to the left for Madrid and foden likes to come in centrally, they’ll be interchangeable. I look at it like this.. Nicol and just all of them are there as entertainment. He's playing a role and he just excels at being the grumpy one. Each has a style and Stevie plays the bad guy.

Playing a forward-thinking player in a major tournament is a calculated risk... we can't rely on our defence. Trent can spray passes all over the field, and with attacking talent like Kane, Bellingham, Saka, Foden, Palmer and co., we should look to attack as much as possible.

Being a midfield player myself, Trent’s major flaw when playing in midfield is his inability to receive the ball with his back to the opposition on the half turn. He only prefers getting the ball when he is not under pressure. This is a major flaw especially for a creative outlet in midfield, and it clearly shows that he is not a natural in that role. Being poor defensively is not the issue

I think everybody looks at this wrong. Trent would make a great asset off the bench in a situation where the team needs offense. He is a game changer. But only in situations.

Right, the old coaching question, do you let the players dictate a system or as Southgate does let the system dictate the players. The latter has been Englands problem for years. Switch the system to a 3-5-2 then Trent plays with Rice and Bellingham. FFS we are stacked going forward let’s be positive and attack. You never play to your weakness namely the defense. We can play 3 at the back Walker Stones Gomez whoever except Maguire far too slow. Then you can play Saka and Foden with Palmer and Kane simply unstoppable going forward.

If Gallagher starts ahead of Trent that just sums up Southgate. Trent has been basically playing midfield for Liverpool all season.

... He should play. Exciting times trying to fit Palmer, Jude, Trent, Foden, Kayne, Saka, Rice in the same team. Mainoo as a sub to come on and help control games. Good nations have many good players for the same position. I would play Trent in midfield though.

Trent main issue is his lack of athleticism & fitness, coupled with terrible positional awareness and I am actually a big fan of his. Kyle Walker started off with athleticism and has developed his footballing intelligence over the years. Tripper is perfect for tournament given his ability to play for Simione who demands intelligent players with crazy fitness. I actually think Konsa is the back up for Kyle with how he's performed for Emery. This year, Trent improved a great deal in terms of positional awareness but was mostly injured. He also didn't offer any of his usual offensive dynamism with Henderson not covering for him any longer. He's also not a wingback in the same way Alfonse Davies isn't. They both require acres of space to do their magic. He also can't play as the right sided mid in a 4-3-3 because he's not a mid by nature. For all his abilities he seems to lack proper footballing intelligence that's been masked when you play for Liverpool, where the system does all the thinking for you. In other words, i'd rather play James Milner than Trent in a major tournament because of his cunning and his mind. Trent will not play in midfield because Southgate is one of the most bland coaches to ever coach a national team. He deserves to coach only in the AFCON with his lack of imagination.

All players have weaknesses and strengths. Trent's weaknesses show if you set up a system that doesn't cover for them. Trent is very much of the same ilk as Kroos. Put him as a quarter-back like RM did in the CL final, and he will pass the ball better than no-body. England already love to pass the ball back. But whatever, he won't get figured out by the likes of Southgate. He is very much a safe manager, Trent needs a coach like Ancelloti, or Pep, or someone a tad bit more inventive. A team's system needs to suit its best players, and Trent's passing ability is world class, on the level of Zidane.

Southgate would never. Hes the most risk averse manager I’ve ever seen. People say the game is boring - it is because all Southgate wants is to not concede. All they do is pass sideways and backwards. Imagine foden, Kane, rice, Bellingham, Trent and Saka. Even with Eze on the LW under a proper manager. They’d be incredible and score so many goals. It would be amazing to watch.

Southgate is conservative on his approach, TAA does not have a place in the starting 11.

Stevie will say absolutely anything to go against Liverpool. He tries to over compensate so he doesn't look biased. If england wants to win something, he starts. France and Argentina, Brazil, Spain, Italy etc win so many tournaments because they have mercurial talents that pull them through tournaments. Think Ronaldo nazario, Ronaldinho, Zidane, Henry, Mbappe, Messi, Maradona, Iniesta, Pirlo etc, all mavericks who can make the marginal differences at these tournaments. International games are notoriously tight, you need those world-class players to produce magic. Both Trent and Foden are the magicians in englands squad. The rest are very good, but those 2 are the ones that can do something from nothing. Create where there's no space, open something up, score a wonder goal. They have that IT factor. The superstar factor that none of the other players really have.

I don’t think TAA is the player he was a few years ago. I’ll be honest and say I haven’t seen enough at Liverpool. Bottom line, if Southgate can’t get a winning team with Bellingham, Kane, Saka and Foden, then something is wrong. Maybe Klopp is interested in the job?

100% with Stevie. TAA doesn't offer enough for me. I'm not really a fan. If he knew how to retain possession under pressure then he can play in midfield. But he can't do that. And he's terrible defensively, so he can't play at full back. Best position for him would have been wing back, but England don't play like that.

It’s true TAA may not start for England cos Southgate is not that brave . Rice and Bellingham definitely start , third MF is still up for grabs mainly between Maddison , Mainoo and Gallagher. Why do you think KDB is important for Man city, others does the passing around, he does too but when he is given, he finds the right person. Play him in the right position and you will see what he can do. Right back with the highest number of assist at his age. The people he mentioned, what have they achieved? Play two CDMS, Gallagher and TAA, or RICE and TAA, they you see what will happen. Just let Bellingham, Foden and Palmer move forward. A formation that allows him room. he would find you.
