I bought a mini Rare Beauty blush and it’s improved my self confidence. I can’t remember the last time makeup did that for me. Now I wear my new blush when I go outside to feed the birds and stray cats. Tbh, I’m 56 and I had such a “Disney” moment last week in our heatwave seeing that all the critters were fed watered and sheltered and I was feeeeeeeelin myself with my pretty blush🤣😂🤣😂

I have learned in the last year that nail polish is my dark horse. I have been so into makeup the past few years but also watching the nail videos on the peripherals of KZread. All of a sudden when I bought an exciting bottle of multichrome nail polish something switched and now all my money goes to nail lacquers and gels. My new expensive hobby is now unlocked lol

my strategy is to have a seperate account for beauty purchases. every month I decide how much I can put there (my birthday month it was double the regular amount), and then everything comes out of that account (incl. toothpaste, shower gel, makeup, everything). and if I have to replace a lot of things in a particular month - well, have to stick to more budget-friendly options. and if I want something more expensive, sometimes I have to save up for a month or two. I also put away money into a separate account for vacations, so I can have a shopping spree if I want when I travel. this strategy has been working for me for the past couple of years, and I feel no guilt when I buy something because I know I budgeted for it

Definitely pace yourself. I'm a reformed polish hoarder, for me it started in 2010 when indies were starting to take off. I peaked during 2016 when everything started looking like everything else, similar to how every new palette looks like one we've seen before. The thing about nail polish is it's a small little bottle, it's an easy purchase or add-on to an order. There's this fallacy that polishes can't travel alone, that if you're placing an order you have to buy more than one. This is false, they don't need a buddy. And if you take care of your polish you could potentially have each and every bottle for years and years. My oldest bottle that I actively use is from 1986. They're worse than kids that won't move out. I die inside when I think about how much I spent on polish... and yet I couldn't tell you how many bottles I've actually finished.

@@catrice1296 On the vintage polish subreddit there's people who have bottles from the 1940s that they are using on their nails, they make my polishes seem brand new!

I’ve been doing a low buy for the last month and what really helps is just telling myself, if I really want something I can wait a week to buy it (works better when I know when the sale date ends) and that really gives me the time to really think about if I really want something. I recently bought the Patrick Ta highlighters as an impulse buy and I actually dislike them so that was another reality check

Fragrance and handbags do me in every holiday season.

Started a low buy challenge in January as well but to be completely honest, I think that made me buy more things than ever. It’s ridiculous! I feel guilty, my bank account is screaming at me and I know I have to stop this shopping marathon so your video came at the right moment! Just an hour ago I was debating if I need a new blush (saw the cream blush from Charlotte Tillbury on Instagram and I thought that I “need” it). Guess what? I don’t and I won’t! Thank you for this “intervention”! I will definitely be joining you with the low buy challenge until the start of the winter holidays! Good luck to all of us!😅

My birthday is in two weeks. I have been busily editing my multi-million dollar skincare virtual shopping baskets. I’m down to several thousands so far. I have set myself a limit of $100 - and if I get the job I interviewed for yesterday, I shall be buying some work clothes, but that’s a need, not a want.

I’m with you Kat, I’ve been really bad and now ive said no more spending until Christmas because I’m saving for Pearl Jam in November!

I have almost the opposite problem in that I really have to force myself to buy things. I'm pretty sure it comes from the scarcity mindset that was ground into me by my parents - use what you have, you don't need new things, we can make things at home. So I over-plan my purchases, do lots of research, and then it takes me days, weeks, months to actually take the leap to buy something. Especially if it's a big purchase, I keep looking at it, debating, etc. My goal is to learn to be a little more free around buying something that brings me joy and not constantly evaluating if I "need" it or not.

Can totally relate to the nail polish obsession. Thanks to a co-worker, I now got into UV nail polish and went crazy for that. Also stocked up on nail art supplies… going back to my former self about 6-7 years ago… There‘ll be better or more successful days ahead. It‘s just that sometimes we dive into something new and want to go with it, but it might only be a season. Maybe it’s just something you needed right now and it kept you from the regular make up purchases. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Library cards are awesome for saving money. ❤ Working on using up one of my oldest lipsticks, just started a new mascara, expanding pan in a powder foundation. Trying bunches of fragrance samples to see if there is at least one that doesn't make my eyes water like faucets.

Have a rule for beauty sales. If it's not at least 30% off it's a no. Save your money and buy when businesses are struggling. US Retail struggles the most during summer.

I daren't watch fragrance reviews, because it would bankrupt me. As for nail polish, I have around 500. 😂

I was on a low-buy, and was doing really well until we took a beach vacation. I bought a bunch of stuff I didn't need for this vacation. Some of it I didn't even use. Some I realized I would only use once, abd didn't especially enjoy it when I used it. I feel foolish. Some of the items I didn't use I was thankfully able to return. It's just a reminder that I have plenty, and still enjoy what I do have. I'm back to buying replacement only, and only if I actually need it.

It's very easy to overspend on both fragrances and nail polish. They're my 2 biggest danger areas.

My skincare lowbuy is going well, ive got out of that habbit, but this last two years, its all about the nail polish!! Lots of indie purchases- its A LOT of money, but i cant stop, theyre just too pretty!!!

I always seem to spend more when I try to put myself on a budget/no buy as i find I obsess over what I'm spending more than when I'm not.

Back when I was on my fragrance deep dive I just bought decants because I also have the headache problem. Don't know if you have an Australian decanter that has all the indie perfumes you were being drawn to but it's a thought for anyone interested in niche and difficult to acquire fragrances! For me, after really getting good with makeup/skincare/kpop, suddenly knitting came back into my life and that's where I've spent my discretionary money lately. But I went into a yarn store today and only bought the two needles I needed plus one cheap mini skein I need for a project in August.

The headache problem is the worst! I don't think people realise how much a fragrance can make or break someone's day! There are a few Aus decant sample stores. I might make a wish list and after my low buy, I might order a few to curb some of the fragrance cravings haha

I was good on my low buy until 2 months ago. Then found my summer clothes didn’t fit anymore, that led down a deep hole of sales! I’ll get back on into it in July too.

I've gotton into indie nail polishes last year as well. Polish Pickup had great and very unique shades and I purchased a lot of new polishes 🙈

My biggest problem is that I really like to match my lipstick and my nails. I also like to dress vintage so that usually means red lipstick and red nail polish of which I need neither of

You can get back on the wagon! I started a nail polish low buy in January and I did great (just 1 bought) until March when I bought 9(!!) polishes. I was so irritated with myself, but I’m happy to say from April-June, I bought just 1 polish! It’s hard because there are 5 summer polishes I want. Sigh The struggle continues, but so does my determination! You’ll succeed, Kat!!

I've tried no buy/low buys. I can't do it - I end up feeling bad when I "break it." I am, however, able to make myself get rid of something to replace it = something in, something out. Because I've been cleaning up my collection of beauty/skin care, I currently have items I really like. It's sooo much easier to stop buying now. That being said, I love fragrance minis! They are my favorite gift with purchase. 😄

I get the fragrance headache too. I just have to go through and swatch them on a piece of paper and walk around with them at the mall if I get the slightest bit of a headache, I just toss it. It is always nice to find a different kind of fragrance than what you usually wear. I was a limited edition nail polish hoarder for years I gave away over 250 nail polishes to a girl that had graduated school for nails or whatever you call it now I’m down to like 20 but I find myself wanting to get back into it and I’m, having a difficult time just like you said there’s a lot of Indy brands in those polishes look really cool😎 there’s also a lot of new makeup out. I just bought the new reformulated Mac studio fix and I’m loving their new formula way better than the old formula. So now I have a list of those I want. 😂

Yeah it’s a fail for me too, but no regrets, I love what I’ve bought and the products bring me joy lol 😊❤

I’ve had to rein in my fragrance purchasing as I leaped down the fragrance rabbit hole last year and did a lot of fragrance shopping, including a lot of blind buying. There’s still many fragrances I want to try/buy, but now I’m limiting it to things I can get decants of to test on my skin, or things I can spray in person and wear to see how they develop on my skin & if they give me a migraine. My bank account is very thankful for this change in purchasing, because I WAY overspent last year and early this year on fragrance. I went from lowest tier beauty loop to L3 in 6 months, and did similar damage on Adore Beauty, Sephora, and Huda Beauty. If Lore had a reward system I would’ve also worked my way up too. And I’d previously worked hard to get from L3 @ Mecca down to the lowest tier after reducing my makeup purchases. At least I’ve not bought any fragrances in the past 3 months!

Real talk: hearing your description of going down the indie polish rabbit hole was basically me in 2021/2022 to the point where I am still paying off cc debt because the FOMO was real and new to me at the time. I've gotten a lot better at it now but lesson learned! You can do it, we all fall off the horse every now and again!

I also have to be cautious with fragrances giving me headaches and migraine, so i understand.

Ive also been on a fragrance kick that EOFY sales have certainly not helped 🙈 keen for a fragrance video 😬 i have found keeoing busy of an evening helps ive been doing paint by numbers but that has started a whole new obsession 😂

I have had to not look at new nail polish videos at all. However I do allow myself to buy Holo Taco, because I LOVE her polishes. The formula wears great on me.

I get headaches from fragrances as well. As a child, mums perfume would give me travel sickness on car journeys. Especially Chanel No 5.

Oh man, I was an indy perfume fanatic from 2005 to about 2017 (back when US shipping was blissfully cheap) and still have an insane collection that's now mostly for nostalgia. I also have a big indy nail polish collection because I've been collecting since 2010 and hit Femme Fatale hard over the last two years. So if you've slipped into those rabbit holes I UNDERSTAND. They're like the tide I swear, you might escape every so often but they somehow pull you back in again at some point! I've been feeling the indy perfume pull *again* lately after years of abstinence. 🙃

You sound like me. Indie polishes and and indie perfumes are my absolutely weakness. I don't need the stupid amount that I own...nor do I need the stupid amount I continue to buy. It's definitely an obsession. A very expensive obsession.

Playing on my phone is a big trigger for me, too. I started bringing a book with me, a physical book, not on my phone so I don't get tempted to scroll, and whenever I feel the need to scroll my phone (especially when I'm commuting), I pull out my book and read instead of scrolling on my phone.

Nail polish vid too!! I have a small problem with those too!

Fragrance also caught up with me recently. After years of sticking to a l’eau d’Issey flanker I started craving a creamy frangipani fragrance warmed by the late afternoon sun. (It’s evocative of my youth.) Well it took a while and I did sample many fragrances in store and make some blind buys before finding one that hit the spot. I also discovered a new affinity for gourmands and for orange blossom in the process. But I’m happy with what I have now. It took 8 purchases with 3 that I needed to pass on to my daughter and a friend because they weren’t what I would wear joyfully. It is an expensive process.

All the sales have got me too, but so far I haven't delved into designer fragrances. If there's one in particularly like I suggest it as a gift for bday or Christmas if family want to know what to buy me.

I'd love to hear updates about your foray into niche fragrances! Where have you been shopping? Fragland is a great Australian site for buying niche decants or I really recommend Lore Perfumery for their selection of niche brands if you haven't already heard of them!

I was holding out and panning skincare so I can buy products I really want and then I went and bought other products and now I also have to pan those first 😅

Overall my no buy is going well, I've only bought supplies I've been literally out of, like acetone for nail art. A lot of perfumes trigger migraines, but I really enjoy perfume so it sucks for sure.

I started a low buy beginning of this year which wasn’t successful. I started a no buy in June and it was going well until last week. Placed 3 orders which included 2 foundations. I don’t need anymore foundation 😪

Lol this year i wanted to abstain from buying makeup which also led me to buy too many perfumes. Then i bought a foundation, nail stuff, and a single eyeshadow. So honestly same.

I'm with you for needing to keep occupied at night. I was considering taking up knitting or something to keep my hands moving while I watch TV, the only issue is my test run did not go well with my cats deciding to cause chaos. Any suggestions on a cat proof idea to keep hands busy?

ive cut back on makeup and being picky which new releases come out, due to the cost of living. i cant understand how makeup companies can charge so much knowing people dont have a lot to splash around.

I started painting my nails in 2018 or 2019 and I remember the days when I had a single black and a single blue polish. Now I have more than 150 polishes lol so I feel you. I'm not on a low-buy but at least with polishes I can typically wait until Black Friday sales to grab like 15 polishes from a brand (cough cough ILNP) at once on sale rather than throughout the year. And yeah... fragrances... Like everyone else I've been getting into perfumes during the past year. My saving grace is at Target in the U.S. they have a dupe brand called Finery and the perfumes are only $30 and the matching body mists are $15. I can justify those every once in a while but I cannot spend $100+ on fancier perfumes. Absolutely not at my current salary. Godspeed on your low/no-buy Kat!

Paula's Choice got me (again) with their anniversary sale (175 bucks), bought another Jane Iredale powder (still wrong shade) and I accidentally just bought 2 foundation sticks. Sticks are surprisingly rare these days. Oh no! I forgot I just ordered a new cushion foundation at 1am this week. Ugh. I just want a method w/speed and no mess. It's the only fragrance free cushion there is and they have a new pale shade so I just justified that in my head right now. That's my low buy June!

I’ve been on a low-buy as well this year and I do struggle when it comes to fragrances as well. I cancelled all the subscriptions I had over the years but one: Scentbird. I tell myself that I have enough fragrances as it is but I’m afraid that if I pull the plug on that one, I might just end up buying more full size ones instead. Do I make sense? I hope the next months will go better for you. I always enjoy watching your videos.

I am at a low buy since, I can’t remember actually. I bought a palette though last month and now I have two. Meet me in the Underworld by Lois cosmetics. And I do need a highlighter since my only one finished two months ago. I don’t know which one to buy, though because if I want to buy one I have to buy in store and I haven’t done any research.

That’s me in a nutshell. I told myself not to buy stupid sh*t this year and I FAILED. Makeup bonanza. But I love it and I am done with shaming myself 🎉

I've been on a low buy the past 2 years as I haven't really worn much makeup, but my skincare this year has gotten quite ridiculous... I've acquired at least 15 sunscreens in the last few months and then that led to more browsing and buying of makeup. It's not out of control yet but I'd like to scale back.

Niche fragrances will nuke your bank account so fast (speaking, sadly, from experience)

I had every intention of doing a low buy but some horrible life events meant I spent money to make myself feel better. I've been tracking everything beauty related I bought this year and I didnt think it was lot but im already nearly onto a 3rd page of purchases and were not even in July yet!

I joined you in your low buy until April and haven't stopped since. Also joining you on the fragrance purchases, no reason why, just decided to buy several sample sets and ordered another one today........ I would like to join you again on the new low buy but my birthday is in August.....🤑💸💸

Yes it does! I bought a bunch around the mid year sales and I won't place another order until Black Friday 😊 I can only justify it with a decent sale because they add up!

I tried so hard to do low buy. Bought a new wifi network, pillow (struggling to find the perfect replacement pillow) and yesterday a lot of bubble tea DIY because of EOFY. I haven’t bought any beauty or fragrance (thank god) everything adds up so fast 😂😅

soooo 50/50 😅Some things i steered clear of as i have SO MUCH skin care or haircare, i only bought what i needed to replace for shampoo and have been panning my skincare but it's slow going, other things i went off the rails for, but i also justified that i'll be replacing some t-shirts and my runners are worn to hell, so like, it was a splurge but also i have no other sneakers lol I'm still torn by makeup that i want, even though i have absolutely NO FKN NEED for more palettes! help the sales are pulling me! >

Haha it's not that one, although I did go into Mecca last week to smell it. This one I couldn't access it in Australia so I had to blind buy it from France 😅 From what I have seen, I will either be obsessed with it or a but underwhelmed... but it should be headache safe

I can't expect a no-buy of myself, realistically, but I've whittled retailers as a step. Nordstrom and Selfridges are crack. 😅 Yeah, I have been down the fragrance dive. It ended, but was useful in determining more precisely what I like/don't like. For example, I don't like most gourmond scents. So, I can pass now on a lot of fragrances that come up in people's videos.
