It is time for the newest instalment in that beloved cinematic automotive KZread experience where we film practical cars that can be bought for less than £1,000 in a manner befitting of their inexpensive value! This may go horribly wrong...
This time, for no apparent reason, I once again become Mr Ian Seabrook from the HubNut channel as we test a 1989 Citroen BX 19 DTR, and deal with a forbidden fuel engine (yet again), hydro-pneumatic suspension, rip off quotes (again), very comfortable seats, strangely placed electric rear window switches, only one wiper, the good old XUD engine and generally little of any consequence at all. Nothing untoward, then...

I remember the BX well, and yes a lot were of the “Forbidden fuel” variety, the XUD engine was a great engine, and during the 90’s when the government were encouraging people to drive Diesels you’d hear that familiar diesel clatter everywhere. I believe Mr Seabrook has actually owned one or two of these himself, and yes agreed he does love his Citroen’s which is why his car love is his 2Cv called Ellie. I’m suprised this car is a “No budget review” car as it’s very difficult these days to buy any car of this era for a price below £1000, most are well above that. Great review again Mr Lloyd.

Yes, you can just about still buy a BX for under £1000 with an MOT. The reason I know is because that is how much Mr Jordan Partridge sold his for last year! They are becoming rare, though, at any price. Mr Seabrook would indeed favour the XUD engined ones and obviously the non-turbo version... He has indeed had a few of these before. That clatter is extremely distinctive!

I was fascinated by these as a small child, my dad's friend had one, and I was just blown away by the fact the car would rise up on start up. Initially the BX didn't sell so well in the UK, but once some of that quirkiness from the inside was removed and the best forbidden fuel engine in the world at the time was fitted, it certainly awoke the fleet market. When a petrol powered 1.8 Sierra or Cavalier was getting mid 30's mpg and these were getting around 50mpg on a run, it made them wake up. Certainly, I don't think as quickly it gained popularity, that after dieselgate it would wain so quickly. An excellent review sir.

We aim to please, sir! Yes, the XUD was certainly well regarded back in the day, although ideally I would have preferred to have driven a nice XU petrol engined 1.9. The BXs were certainly around when I was younger, but we weren't into such weird French stuff in our family, even if my grandfather was half French... He was much happier with Maestros! I can see why Ian Seabrook likes them, they are very different from the normal Sierra or Cavalier.

I'm not surprised that you eventually liked this particular Citroën, as I myself am learning much about the brand. I think the most outstanding feature is the LHM, as it also powers braking and in some Citroëns its steering on top of giving Citroën its unique, extremely comfortable ride. It isolates one from the most horrendous of road surfaces! I actually like the sound of this engine, and yes, it's forbidden fuel, but I do like the sound of an agricultural engine! The sculpting of the front seats reminds me of Peugeot, but the woven fabric, the shape of the front headrests, all uniquely Citroën. I must admit I do like a single windscreen wiper! Another exceptional review Joseph!

As you said, when left to stand the back would drop right down which always looked very odd next to other 'normal' cars when I was a child (I thought they were broken!). My Father in Law owned a 1991 1.7 TGD. It was not top of the range but was more powerful, comfortable and better equipped than the 1984 Vauxhall Cavalier 1.6 DL that it didn't replace but ran alongside for 2 years. That Cavalier Hatchback was cavernous. However, the Citroën's long distance comfort and economy were unsurpassed. The gearchange was a little notchy but never deteriorated over time and only needed to be used sparingly with the torque. The non power steering had good feel, the grip was tenacious and traction on snow was amazing. The only failing was the suspension getting caught out by hump backed bridges and bottoming out, easily countered once discovered Lol. The hydraulic suspension lends itself easily to magic carpet ride and firm self levelling sporting handling. That Mk 2 Cavalier 1.6 D just seemed to work and never break. It was of course very slow but always got to its destination without fail. Made the BX 1.7 TGD seem to be a GTI. 🤣
