The BX - Citroën's comeback car

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Citroën has always been a car maker that’s charted a different course with car design. It’s meant that several times they’ve been ahead of the curve on technical innovations. By getting a steal on the competition, there was always a feeling that if they could shake off some of their weirder parts of their car design, they could finally break into the mainstream large car market with a superior product. The BX was a car that had as good a shot as any of Citroën’s previous cars of making that transition. As they said in their marketing material, it had “originality without being eccentric”. It was their chance to show to parent Peugeot just what they could do when they combined reliable parts from the Peugeot parts bin with Citroën’s innovation. So, did it catapult Citroën into the mainstream, or was it just a flop?

    If you're wondering what the advert breaks are all about - I like that it's "retro", and also it's a subtle reminder that adverts pay for these videos. If you don't have an ad blocker on they make more sense! Thanks for watching and supporting the time & effort that goes into these videos.

    I've had 3 BXs - one of them a 16 RS from 1987-2015. I kept it as a "joy car" to occasionally enjoy the true flying carpet feeling, as modern suspensions got harder and harder 😄 The hydropneumatic suspension was initially launched in the DS, showing that you could drive on only 3 wheels - I discovered how useful and lifesaving this construction was once I had a puncture on a front wheel while driving 160 km/h. I just felt a little vibration in the steering wheel and wondered, because the tarmac was new and smooth. I stopped and then discovered that I'd been going for so long, that the tire had left the rim altogether! I very much doubt that the car had stayed on the road, had it been any other make. Thanks to the hydropneumatic, it only took a couple of minutes to change the wheel and be off again. All 3 BXs were totally reliable and a joy to drive.

  • @kh23797

    @kh23797

    @Dano ... That universal fashion for ever harder suspension overlooked Citroën's hydropneumatics, where minimum body roll and stability still allowed a smooth, comfy ride. Rolls adopted it, but it stopped there. The craze for illusory sportiness ignored reality-most Brits toddle around potholed, choc-a-bloc roads bristling with speed cameras and emergency road works.

    I had two BXs a 19DTR Turbo and a GTI. Both completely reliable and only had regular servicing. The DTR had 180,000 miles on the clock when I sold it. I have been lucky enough to have owned cars that that are considered "great" too, Renault 5 GT Turbo, a Subaru WRX, and I have a BMW M2 Competition right now, and I still think of both of those BXs as being really wonderful cars and in terms of ride quality they are pretty much unsurpassable. Maybe I was just lucky to get 2 reliable ones! Thanks for the reminder of this brilliant, quirky piece of automotive history.

    When I got my BX I couldn't believe how good it was. Drove like on a cushion of air. Precise steering. 4 disk braking with the new Abs system. The black fabric seats gripped like rally seats and the space age interior all in black looked fantastic. The engine was as good as any engine of today. Very high torque to BHP so pulled like a train. MPG as I remember was OK. Not sure if it was computerised EFI but it seemed very refined. The hydro suspension worked great after I replaced the hydro spider (the pressure devider) easy 30 minute job. I'd have another one today.

    I used to have a BX turbo diesel. I will always remember, after a thunder storm driving over an old brick bridge that was flooded out because the water could not drain in to the Stream below it, there was a brand new BMW 635 that had come to a halt in the middle of it. I just put my suspension in high and drove past him, waving and smiling, waving and smiling lol

    I have very fond memories of owning a red mkii 1.6. As you suggest, it was the car that brought me to Citroen for the first time. I followed it with a Peugeot 405 then a Xantia (which was a terrific car) so I guess the BX was responsible for getting me into the PSA stable for several years.

    Great video. They were good cars - clever use of composites to lower weight and improve performance /economy (modern cars take note!) - and that great suspension system. A cut above much of what was around at the time. The non GTI models were soft but there was nothing wrong with their handling for what was a family car after all. On a wet poorly surfaced country road in the dark I think they'd be more secure (albeit rolling more) than a Sierra / Cavalier thanks to FWD / that suspension

    I had an 8v GTI, once I tweaked it a bit by having it's stance lean very slightly forward, and carved my own notch in the height selector lever for slightly lower than the normal ride, the handling was excellent! A slackening off of the power steering would have given it better road-fell, but other than those minor tweaks, it was a brilliant car. I got a Xantia Activa 2lt turbo later, it had a button that did my height adjustment tweak, but was heavier, and I doubt any quicker.. Although that active suspension did make it a real surpriser for quicker cars, the cornering was awesome!

    Your uncle was veryvery unliucky....the 1.8 and 19 PSA diesel engine from the 80’s and 90’s was of excellent quality!!....smooth and quiet,economic and reliable....I witnessed how this PSA engine was the first diesel to be disposed/scrapped when the vehicle came to the end...they would simply last for half a million kilometers....without defects,without drinking oil,compression stil ok,starting in all conditions...EVERY other diesel engine stil any good in a scrap car would be sold in no time.....for good money!!....for the PSA engine there was little demand because they outlasted cars and owners.... Only thing to be careful with is the timing belt:if it breaks the cilinderhead is gone.....
