It is time for the newest instalment in that beloved cinematic automotive KZread experience where we film practical cars that can be bought for less than £1,000 in a manner befitting of their inexpensive value! This may go horribly wrong...
This time we examine a very cheap 2000 Mercedes-Benz CLK 230 Kompressor Avantgarde Cabriolet and discover mildly rusty front arches, a roof that will not tolerate being operated in the wrong order, a beige leather interior, motorway performance, a wealth of stickers, AMG wheels and really little anything of any consequence at all.... Nothing untoward, then!
As an independent vehicle consultant, I take potential buyers through the whole car buying process from choosing a make and model to a vehicle handover and road tax. In addition to information on this service, I also have a selection of written and video reviews of cars that I have owned, hired, borrowed or have somehow come into my possession. Please use the Contact Me page on my website to get in touch, visit my Facebook page for latest updates and share this video if you like it! Thank you for watching.

    It's a good looking car with lots of appeal for the price. I worked for a prestigious car dealership when it was a current model, they were very popular with customers wives. I did notice at the time, if you looked deeper, you could see the drop in quality in areas especially, when comparing to the very first generation C-Class it was based on. Those early C-Classes, felt very solid and substantial both inside and out. Another excellent review MR Lloyd, most enjoyable.

    A previous neighbour of mine had a C class new around 1997 and still had only a few years ago so probably were solid. I know someone had a newr C class as a company car and the glove box unit in its entirety fell from the dash board.

    I’m really a fan of the front of these, they look almost retro German having oval lights and their layout . Also I now know what my wheels originate from, cabrio’s of this size look so much better with the roof down. What you get in a German older biggish car for the money is quite something. Interesting to see some of the formats have stayed the same too. Great review with lots of info, thank you Joseph. Ps s standard, e economy on MB, like you I thought I was Sport until I was corrected in a W124 FB group, those guys are brutal.

    Thanks ever so much indeed, Mr Quirk! Yes, the wheels probably can be swapped between a W208 and a W124. The value for money with this one is staggering. Thank you for the clarification about the gearbox switch, I think that you will probably see another one of those very shortly.

    My CLK230k Convertible is a complete rot box, and not nearly as nice as this. Still my pride and joy. Last winter, I spent £3k on it and We Buy Any Car valued it at £450. I do love the CLK from that era. That seems like a very tidy example considering it was from that time where Mercs did like to rust as you mentioned. The second generation C Class didn't hold up at all well on that front at all. I always thought these were based on the second generation C Class not the first. Now I know it's the first generation C Class, I understand more why I like these. Probably the last over engineered Mercedes. The cupholder for example. Now they just make a cut out in the centre console instead!

  • @lloydvehicleconsulting

    @lloydvehicleconsulting

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yes, it really is a very good example, particularly given the purchase price, and the rust isn't that serious. The first generation C-Class was quite a significant car. They still rusted, but not as badly as the second generation one. The cupholder is completely ridiculous, isn't it?

    I am a Merc guy through and through , I have two a W221 S320 Cdi long wheelbase and a 1999 R170 SLK 230 Kompressor which is my summer car. Get a decent one and they will last you for years. Wings and wheel arches are a problem with blistering but if you get them sorted they will last for years to come. Find a Mercedes independent specialist to maintain them and it is not expensive to keep them in good condition. Essential to have them serviced every 10,000 miles and I have oil changes at 5,000, just my choice. This model CLK is one of the best models. On the face of it this one seems a very good buy indeed. With the roof down thus model is a lovely vehicle. It is also showing "No Malfunctions" which is excellent.

    Well sir, I think you find Wednesday's video most interesting in that case... I won't say any more, but based on what you have said, it may be quite fascinating. I agree with a car like this that an independent specialist is the way forward. We have a couple in the area, actually. My Rover 45 V6 also is looked after by specialist mechanics these days and has bi-annual oil changes. The roof does indeed work (if you follow the correct procedure) and the lack of faults on the display was most reassuring.

    Oh my goodness, I haven't seen a CLK Cabriolet in a very long time! At it looks familiar also! I remember Mercedes-Benz offering designo interior offering, so offerings in the UK 🇬🇧 are different from the the US. And most had power equipment standard. V6 and V8 engines available, to which you mentioned, and NEVER THOSE FORBIDDEN ENGINES YOU DON'T TALK ABOUT. Also, electronic climate control was standard, as well as a different infotainment system, which might have included sat navigation option. Parksense™ parking assist was a very necessary option. I also feel headlamp washers are necessary as well for safety and visibility. The cruise control stalk is typical Mercedes-Benz, and mistaking it for the turn signal lever is common. However, for one that is not familiar with the vehicle, it is a long standing danger that Mercedes-Benz never seemed to have recognised. Worse, cruise control is always on, no separate switch to prevent accidental activation. Love the exterior and interior colours! And £500??!! And absolute bargain! Another smashing review!

  • @lloydvehicleconsulting

    @lloydvehicleconsulting

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yes indeed, no forbidden fuel engines this time, which was a big relief! The interiors and engine options were a bit different in America, and there was an absolutely enormous options list, typical of Mercedes at the time. I only mistook the cruise control stalk for the indicators a couple of times. £500 was a crazy bargain, Allwyn did very well this time.
