That's my favorite thing about this song, other than the fact Taylor wrote a banger of a murder ballad: that first verse, almost every reactor is all "well, she probably means... there's no way it's an ACTUAL body... Taylor wouldn't write about..." *cackles*

Fun fact, Taylor actually got a boating license when she was 15!

Taylor was watching crime shows a lot in quarantine. This is pure Taylor storytelling. Yes, Evermore is that great album. She said Evermore is about endings.

Such a fun detour back to Taylor’s country roots. She and the Haim sisters are friends, and Swift said she knew Este Haim would be stoked to be written into a murder mystery song. She texted Este when she was penning the song - something like ‘this won’t make sense until later but which of these chain restaurants is your favorite?” Este chose Olive Garden and the rest is history. Haim is opening for some of the shows on the Eras tour so hopefully we’ll get to see them perform this live with Taylor. BTW - their name’s pronounced with a long I sound (Hime) like “L’Chaim”.

This was fun to watch. I always giggle at the shocked faces of reactors. Yes, she went there. And, then she dumped the body. 😂

Just a little trivia.. Taylor appeared in 1 episode (Turn, Turn, Turn) of CSI last 2009 and her character died. She also appeared in the movie 'The Giver' as a memory of a dead character. And her latest cameo was in the movie Amsterdam last year where she was hit by a car and died. She likes playing dead. 😆

Evermore is such a mood. I'm glad you're having fun. When I think of Folklore, the vibe I get is "I'm stuck in the middle of a forest but I'm not scared, I kinda like it here..in fact, I think I belong here" While Evermore gives me "I see a small town in the edge of this forest, let's see what its inhabitants are like and maybe have some fun"

Oh my god watching the confusion on your face at the beginning of the bridge slowly morph into shocked realization was the best thing I've ever seen! This song is so fricken wild and I don't think I'll ever get tired of watching people reacting to it. This is 100% my favorite though. I loved watching you work through all the lyrics!

Goodbye Earl is a song TS sang in concert of 1989 tour with the original singers The Chicks who TS looked up to while growing up and she mentions them in her Doc and how the media treated them when they spoke up against Bush

Goodbye Earl is by The Chicks (previously the Dixie Chicks) who Taylor loves & had on her Lover Album. There's another great country song that falls in this True Crime country song genre by Reba called The Night the Lights Went Out In Georgia, that you'd really like! Great job getting the plot first listen! A lot of us were smacking our heads as reactors were going "Wait! What?!" 🤦‍♀️ Thanks for a great reaction!

Reba was actually not the first person to sing The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia. It was originally sung by Vicki Lawrence (of "Carol Burnett Show" and "Mama's Family"fame). No Body No Crime, Goodbye Earl, and The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia all join a genre of songs known as Murder songs. Some of these date back to the 1800s or earlier and have been passed down like folk tales with conflicting stories as to who wrote them (see also: Kurt Cobain saying Ledbelly wrote In the Pines/Where Did You Sleep Last Night). Murder Songs are a fascinating rabbit hole. But this song is a great one from Ms. Taylor and the Haim sisters.

@@HitomiKitage Ah-greed! For hundreds of years of Americana, Murder Songs were often women's only way to speak out about injustices, double standards, possibly having had enough and doing some "Vigilante Shit" (or any combination of the above) in ways that educated people, served as a pseudo confession & as warnings about pushing us too far, what women will do to protect themselves or those they loved & even threats all cloaked in that "aw, shucks, we womenfolk wouldn't really do those things" but sang with enough bite to make some men squirm & wonder! As Taylor stated "It's time to take the masking tape off of my mouth-like, forever!"

All the song is the same crime: First part: Este thinks his husband is cheating on her so he decides to call him out but she doesn't have any proof Second part: Este's was nowhere to be found, not at work, house or anything and her husband reports her as missing ''His mistress moving in sleeps in Este's bed and everything''. Taylor Suspects that he killed Este Third part (Bridge): Taylo plans to kill Este's husband, and Este's sister swears she was with her the whole time

Know I'm late to this party, but welcome to the long & well-known country music tradition of murder ballads. Also extends to more folk traditions etc (e.g. Nick Cave & Kylie Minogue "Where The Wild Roses Grow"). Estie is also the name of one of the Haim sisters, and another sister speaks the alibi.
