Bought an Oomo Showa tosai off Peter Waddington 20years ago,cost a weeks wages.He said year on year it will go better.It was the stand out koi in a pond of stand out koi,he was a 1000% right and was on top of his game,same as Tim Waddington is now.

Koi are graded by body shape,colour but it has to be certain pattern,fin shape and size,scales and that's just a few things that makes them a good koi

Most of the rejected koi or culled r sold to koi broker..n exported throughout continents.

What are they checking for?

I think most everyone would, Do they kill the culls here or sell them for a small profit??

Its hard to spot the same things that he is seeing.. But that´s where experience comes to play, he probably know by experience what Koi will evolve into a koi with nice colors and good shape. But once thats said.. what does make a good Koi, other that good health and shape.. Its in the eye of the person viewing it. Personaly I dont care much about these "standard" koi, but Iam fond of the Kin Kikokuryu version, since I find their colors patterns and scale look alot more interesting. But once thats said, I do agree, that you can choise betwine a Koi with nice strong colors and a Koi with washed out colors... again, only experience can tell if a koi will evolve nicely.. ( and the genes of the parent kois ofcource )

can i have those rejected koi? coz in the Philippines rejected koi still sold in high price especially in pet shops.

i want to just have the ones put in rain ditches. In Koi magazine few yrs ago it showed pics of Kohaku we'd die for stuck in rain ditches on sides of roads. Spill overs from storms etc... Imagine that?? i guess to them theyre like us seeing a Frog....LOL.

I wondered about the with the time and effort put in , but apparently the rejects as you would put it will just go into the normal pet trade not the high quality market .

body shape, genetics, Pattern. Usually a Bigger koi is worth more than a smaller one. but ofcourse a 1 year old tategoi can be worth much (much) more than a 5 year old tateshita

pientje2007 they wont cull fishes at that size. Itll simply be grouped up and sold as low quality koi.

Emmanuel Thommy yes he is simply culling them from the future breeding stock - the ones he is discarding are for pets and beginner hobbyists. They are too valuable to just kill.

I have 3 koi fish. 1 Showa my showa I name Ryoko ( meaning She Dragon) 1 Karasugoi ( karasu means Crow and he's all Black with Gold belly high quality Koi) I name him Ginrin. A Golden Ghost Butterfly koi name Lemondrop. And Wakin Goldfish name Hiro

It seems it's all about his personal preference. I have yet to hear from anyone who can give me a definitive answer on what makes a Koi more special than others, beyond deformities, missing fins and bruises. Doesn't seem like he cares too much about them the way he's throwing them around either.

I'll try to help, but I'm no professional either so I'll try my best. They also look how vivid the colors are. The black spots, they want to be as dark as ink, the white as milky white as possible, the orange has to be more of a red orange. If you look he tosses away those with light orange and faded black instantly. A champion koi is a larger koi where the all the colors pop, perfect shape, and must have some rare pattern to it (eg. some kind of symmetry, perfect shape spots). The reason this is a 5th selection is because all koi's will have their colors pop in some point in their life. But usually when they are younger. A champion koi will have the quality of a younger fish but in actuality it is a larger older koi. Also the colors don't always climax at the same time, say the white shines, but orange is still coming up, or the black is not quite dark yet. Its important for all three colors to climax at the same time.
